The Clock is Ticking for A US Attack on Iran

Tell A Friend

By Dave Lindorff

I admit to feeling a little like the weatherman who keeps saying it's going to rain, and who eventually is proven correct. I feel certain that the Bush/Cheney regime is going to launch a disastrous attack on Iran, but have made several calls, which have been proved wrong, beginning back in October 2006, when I wrote that it looked like several aircraft carrier battle groups were being put in position for the assault, but then it was called off, thanks to a decision by former Secretary of State James Baker to release the conclusions of his "Iraq Study Group"  early--which called for negotiations with Iran.

Now it looks like the attack is coming soon.

The Washington Post's Ann Scott Tyson is today reporting in an article headlined, Joint Chiefs Chairman Says US Preparing Military Options Against Iran, that Admiral Michael Mullen, the nation's top military officer, thinks the US military is not stretched too thin to take on Iran, and that Iran is becoming an "increasingly lethal and malign influence" in Iraq.

This article comes only a day after a US civilian ship under contract to the US military to deliver supplies to Iraq fired on Iranian boats in the Persian Gulf--just the kind of aggressive action that could lead to an Iranian reaction and trigger a full-blown US response.

The Persian Gulf is now crammed full of US attack ships, ranging from a missile-armed nuclear sub to aircraft carriers packed with tomahawk cruise missiles and fleets of attack aircraft larger than most nation's entire air forces (and also with nuclear weapons).

Other things also point to an attack, most significantly the pushing out of Adm. William Fallon as Central Command chief, and now his replacement by Gen. David Petraeus, who is widely seen as a "political" general who is essentially a yes-man for Bush and Cheney.

I would say the die is cast, and that it awaits only the pretext.

There would be no melodramatic Congressional debate over the reasons for going to war against yet a third nation this time around. Thanks to the 2001 Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF) passed by Congress in October 2001 (and never subsequently rescinded) to authorize the attack on the Taliban and Al Qaeda in Iraq, which Bush and Cheney have illegally and outrageously interpreted as a declaration of a global and unending "War on Terror," the administration is claiming it has the right to attack any nation it defines as "terrorist" at any time, without authorization. Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton helped promote war against Iran a few months ago by backing a Senate resolution authored by Sens. Joe Lieberman and Jon Kyle that defined the Iranian Revolutionary Guard as a "global terrorist" organization. That was all Bush and Cheney needed, as Clinton, Lieberman and Kyle clearly knew.

In what has to be one of the understatements of the century, Adm. Mullen said he knew that conflict would be "extremely stressing" and "disastrous on a number of levels."

Indeed it would. Troops in Iraq are already on their fourth and even fifth rotation, and the "surge" troops in Iraq for the past year are being sent home, not because their job of "stabilizing" Baghdad is done (hardly! violence is increasing!), but because there's nobody left to replace them, and they've been there for 15 brutal months.

Worse yet, oil prices have hit a record $122/barrel and are causing a US and even a global recession--but that figure will be doubled the minute any US attack on Iran begins. This is because war with Iran would immediately bring all oil shipments through the Persian Gulf, which supplies 20-25 percent of the world's oil, to a halt. Even if not one tanker were sunk, no insurer would cover a tanker in that region. Moreover, Iranian sappers, and their allies in Iran, Turkey and Saudi Arabia, could be expected to take out vulnerable pipelines, refineries and even well-heads in retaliation to any attack.

So an attack on Iran would mean global economic collapse.

Hold on to your hats. I hope I'm proved wrong yet again, but I'm afraid we're in for a bumpy ride. Even if there is no attack, the level of threats against Iran now emanating from the White House and the Pentagon are sufficient to keep driving oil prices skyward.

Americans should look at those pump prices and see Bush's and Cheney's faces in the digital display.

They should also think of the gas they pump as blood, because it is going to be spilled in prodigious quantities if the US goes through with an attack. Not only would countless innocent Iranians be killed by US bombs and rockets and by any radiation released by attacks on Iran's nuclear facilities (the more so if the US or its Israeli ally use nuclear bombs in that attack), but the toll of US military casualties could be expected to soar, as Iran's Shia allies in Iraq predictably turn on American forces in support of Iran.

Pray your wrong David, But...

I pray Bush/Cheney don't fullfill your prediction. However everything you are saying rings true, I'm afraid.  Months before the 911 attack back in 01; Alex Jones was predicting a "False Flag" attack somewhere in America. He urged his listeners to call their Congressmen, and The White House; hoping if enough people called or wrote, that somehow the mission would be halted. Well it went through, and now they have gotten away with so much, they must feel we're too dumbed down, or weak to stop whatever they wish to do. With our Congress giving Bush a blank check and a free hand to impose his will on us, it appears there is no stopping this insanity. I've written countless letters and made many calls to my reps in Washington, begging them to stop the "Decider", to no avail. All thats left to do now is pray and hope.

I wondered how far they'd let him go, I think we'll soon see

As Bush prepares to administer the coup de grace to what's left of America, I think the one thing that fascinates me most, is the question as to what, exactly, is going on in the "minds" of those whose duty it is to stop him, but absolutely refuse to do so.

Of course I understand that most, if not all of our "representatives" are nothing but shameless career criminals, but I would've guessed that even the most hardened sociopaths have some sense of self-preservation that would've kicked in by now.

I wonder, is it just "delusion" on a massive scale, or is there, as I'm beginning to suspect, some kind of supernatural force at work here? Could Bush and his enablers be the agents of America's divine judgment?

The excuse used by the

people who help "Execute" these plans, are "Just Following Orders". Even though they are accomplices to Treason and War Crimes offenses.

I had a conversation in Jan, 2001 with a cousin in Germany, telling him that Bu$h & Co. will invade Iraq, Iran, and Syria before the end of 2008. So don't feel bad about not getting the "Timing" correct on a pre-emptive strike against Iran. The chamber has been loaded for a number of years now and there just hasn't been enough pre-text to squeeze the trigger.

Fallon has been replaced with "Yes" man Petraus, and the chain of command is on board for the inevitable. It's not a matter of if, but when.

Total War on Their Own Lifetime I think

The warmongers can entertain all manner of sociopathic fantasies in their creepy and cruel minds -- but opening up another front is suicidal for them and their entourage (never mind the U.S., Iranian and world collateral damage).  The nations of the world will not stand for it, nor will it's people.

The weather would never be "Right" for an insane action as proposed against Iran.  It would be...PISS OFF the world, and PAINT A TARGET ON ALL OUR BACKS (referring to this administration, cabinet, both houses, and all other complicit spineless suck-ups.  They would be instant persona non grata EVERYWHERE!  It would be an insane action with a personal death wish.

None of these schlubs has exhibited any personal courage to give them a chance at surviving the blowback.

Mr MCurrently I'm a cartoonist and contributing writer for The New Orleans Levee.

Except ...

... if a "false flag" attack bigger than 9/11 were to occur, which would have an effect of quelling any blow-back and cower the sheeple once again.

One can't lose sight that these people are insane. Their quest is for world domination, and just like any other despots who have tried before them they have visions we dare not understand.

I feel I could have written this article, for I too have been saying since before Iraq that Iran was going to be attacked. And you can forget about any blow-back in this country. Marshall Law will be declared, foreign troops that have been training and stationed in abandon military camps along with brainwashed police will be herding those that aren't conscripted to fighting for the "war effort" into one of the 800 FEMA camps.

If you don't it can happen - it already has. I live in New Orleans. To see how easy it was for authority to take over a city was frightening. A lot of "drowning" victims had holes in their heads.

How the rest of the world reacts doesn't matter. For one, most of the countries that matter have had right-wingers put in as heads-of-state. Even Canada, our friendly enabler to our North. All of this has been planned and put in place by people of the likes of Bilderbergers, Council of 300 and other world elites who know the world's over-populated and this is their way of thinning the herd.

Insane? Sure it is. But that never stopped them in the past and so far I see nothing stopping these cretins from driving us all into their Apocalyptic Hell now.

A question for Mr. M?

Mr. M -- you stated, "I live in New Orleans.  To see how easy it was for authority to take over a city was frightening.  A lot of "drowning" victims had holes in their heads".

Yes sir, I read about that.  Diabolical...

It seems to me, that once the societal thread breaks down here,  those w/guns will pick them up to protect themselves, their families, and defend what they have left.  It is likely militias will form quickly in communities.

There are so many veterans here, so many hunters, and patriots that are not going to go anywhere without a fight.  I agree certain portion of the population can be herded, eliminated, shipped to a "holding" facility, but there are true fighters EVERYWHERE.  Guerillas in waiting.  True Patriots, and future Heroes to be.

What's your take, considering your experience in New Orleans and thoughtfulness on this subject?

madness

David,

what would the neocons gain by an attack on Iran? I have been searching through commentaries for the longest time to try and understand what would the purpose of an attack on Iran, and despite my personal distaste for the neocons, I still imagine that they would consider the pros and cons before launching another war. Yes, they totally got it wrong with Afghanistan and made it even worse with Iraq, but surely they can see that their original aims have not been achieved in either. The only plausible motivation for a neocon attack on Iran appears to be madness itself. And it is not just the Republicans who exhibit such madness. But do you think there are not enough rational people in the ranks of both political parties to avoid an otherwise completely pointless war with a country as strong and determined as Iran?

JOB QUALIFICATIONS IN THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION

"Fallon told Petraeus that he considered him to be 'an ass-kissing little chickenshit' and added, 'I hate people like that', the sources say. That remark reportedly came after Petraeus began the meeting by making remarks that Fallon interpreted as trying to ingratiate himself with a superior."

Look who now has Fallon's job.  At least we know what all the "loyal Bushies" are like.

As Long Is It Doesn't Preempt American Idol

The star swaddled television addicted lemmings and the masses of asses can't even be bothered with the war in Iraq and they are being slowly bled to death by high gas and food costs. I see no mass outrage now and doubt that it will occur after WWIII is kicked off by the lunatic Bushreich neocons. A sad state of affairs this is and perhaps the worse thing is that none of the three clowns running to occupy King George's throne are doing a damned thing to stir up public sentiment against this catastrophe, they would rather dick around bickering about bitter bowlers, gun toting bible thumpers and hellfire and brimstone sermons from a preacher who is 100% correct.

We were all screwed from the moment that telling the truth became an act of ultimate sin here in Der Heimat. Dave, you are correct that this is coming and the gates of Hell are going to be flung open.

History and God will damn us for this and justifiably so, and when it is all said and done nobody will be more to blame than the masses of asses who just tune out and tune in.

Just my two cents

Think about the "Them" over there. They are human beings

I also did not mean to be too "self-conscious" about our present and future plight here in the U.S.  The important concept to keep in mind is "pre-emptive genocide"  (ala Fight them there before you have to fight them Here).  This is a diabolical concept.  We should keep in mind what we have done to Iraq and it's people (who had nothing to do with 9/11).  Going after another population with resources we want, by demonizing them and attacking them will be unforgiveable.  We are already unforgiven.

Re: The Clock is Ticking for A US Attack on Iran

A very sobering article, Dave.

What is most troubling is knowing that this pernicious administration and a complicit corporate media fed our country and the World a pack of lies, which allowed for this illegal and horrific invasion  and occupation of Iraq. Now, they're at it again, beating the same drums of war with Iran, while most, if not all of America is simply too busy watching Dancing with the Stars and American Idol. Such an horrendous attack on Iran need not concern them. Besides, we wouldn't want to distract them from their element now would we! The "American Sheeple's Demise" perhaps a soon ta be reality show? No, strike that. It's already a "reality."

Even more deplorable was watching some of last nights Correspondents dinner in Wor-shing-ton, where these very same corporate media shills along with our usurper and chief, George Bush a man who has undoubtedly committed treason and perhaps war crimes were there yukking it up as if everything were normal. These people are so far removed from "reality" and could give a rat's arse whether this bellicose administration strikes at Iran or not. As long as it makes for good copy, and the blood money is flowing, they're happier than a pig in shit feeding from this wretched trough of tyranny.

And how can this man be smiling!

Munich -- good question...smiling? Sleeps well?!

I was searching for a word earlier to be descriptive.  I used "diabolical".  I believe DEPRAVED is apt.  Are there ANY smiles among the Iraqi population?  The Afghanis?  There is STRESS among the U.S. population who actually observe, read and understand the signs of the times.  It "ain't no joking matter!"  It actually makes me Seething Angry to see the Smirking Chimp's psychopathic demeanor.  &##@@!!!!!  Interpret This GWB.

1936 deji vue

I was a 7 year old boy during Hitlers rise to power, I saw the black shirts and the brown shirts marching the streets of England all certain that their cause was just. As we all know and most of our parents knew it was Fascism, a mad desire to prove certain people are superior to others. I saw it repeated in 2001 here in America when the people could be convinced that the USA was attacked so easily. I saw the signs of a people brainwashed into a belief in a superior nation., the flags and the bumper stickers, the outrage and the call for revenge. No sober thinkers about telling the masses it could all be a false flag, Oh! no, just as Cheney and company predicted, mass hysteria. Now of course after the US forces didn't produce the expected easy victory the masses turn to disinterest, the Iraq invasion didn't happen, and we were never in favour of it anyway.

Now the snowball is running down the hill and to try to stop it requires superhuman powers, and there aren't any, Syria will be attacked and then Iran shortly afterwards, it will end in a repeat of Napoleon at Moscow. It always ends in tears and victory is a distant dream, all that remains is a shattered country and jobless people scavenging for crumbs from their inferiors.

I saw it in Germany in 1947.
