Impeachment on a Roll

Down the shore yesterday, as we say in Philly, I was body surfing in the Atlantic and it got me to thinking.

On the East Coast, where the prevailing winds are offshore, the surf tends to be pretty tame, and Thursday was no exception, with the biggest waves cresting at perhaps three feet. Nonetheless, these little combers were able to send my prone body racing 100 feet toward the beach at a good clip.

There’s a lot of energy packed in even a small wave.

Just so with impeachment, where a wave is slowly building for the impeachment of Vice President Dick Cheney.

Since Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) filed his impeachment bill against Cheney back April 24, five other members of the House have signed on as co-sponsors, most recently Rep. Lynn Woolsey (D-CA), co-chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus. She joins Reps. Yvette Clarke (D-NY), Jan Schakowsky (D-IL and chief deputy whip of the House), William Lacy Clay (D-MO) and Albert Wynn (D-MD) as co-sponsors of H. Res. 333.

------------------------

Flash Update! Just to make the point about how this wave is building, shortly after I filed this piece, Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA), another co-chair of the House Progressive Caucus, signed on as a co-sponsor of H.Res. 333. Cheney has to be starting to sweat...

---------------------------

Kucinich’s bill is narrowly focused on Cheney’s criminal role in lying the nation into an illegal invasion of Iraq, and on his illegal threat to launch an unprovoked attack on Iran.

The wave that is building in the House for impeachment of this criminal administration may seem small, but it is definitely building. As each new representative signs on to H. Res. 333 as a co-sponsor, others gain courage and find it easier to buck the “leadership” of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi et al.

It seems likely that as the magnitude of that wave grows, some members will add to the list of Cheney’s crimes with their own additional impeachment bills. After all, Cheney was clearly behind the illegal outing of CIA agent Valerie Plame Wilson, was involved in the politicization of the Justice Department, and is now known to have been involved in the illegal, warrantless wiretapping and internet monitoring of American citizens by the National Security Agency.

At some point, there will surely be a second wave, which will begin with a member impeachment bill against President Bush.

Evidence that Pelosi is losing her footing is coming in many forms.

There’s the impeachment resolution passed late last month by the Detroit City Council. Now there have been nearly 100 such resolutions passed around the country, but this one stands out because it was introduced by Council President Monica Conyers, who happens to be the wife of Rep. John Conyers (D-MI), the chair of the House Judiciary Committee, which would be where any impeachment hearing would be conducted. Conyers was once a leading advocate of the impeachment of Bush and Cheney, but buckled when Pelosi threatened to deny him the coveted chair of the Judiciary Committee. Clearly, his wife thinks he shouldn’t have caved, and Conyers is showing signs of wanting action on impeachment. He has lately taken to encouraging the actions of impeachment activists.

There are also the many resolutions calling for impeachment of Bush and Cheney which have been passed, often overwhelmingly, by state Democratic Parties, including those in California, Massachusetts and North Carolina.

Finally, there are the statements from Democratic politicians, who are looking increasingly ridiculous in their efforts to avoid talking impeachment. Take Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY). Nadler, back in 2006, was a member of the group of 39 House members in the 109th Congress who signed on to Rep. Conyers’ then bill calling for a select committee to investigate impeachable crimes by the administration (that bill died with the end of the 109th Congress). Recently, Nadler, who sat on the impeachment panel during the Clinton impeachment farce, and who chairs the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Civil Liberties, declared in a recent radio interview that “there’s a prima facie case” that the president and the attorney general “engaged in a criminal conspiracy.” He went on to say that when the executive branch is “contemptuous of the power of Congress” and breaks or ignores the law, then “you have to use whatever weapons the Constitution gives Congress.”

Now Nadler is no dummy. He knows that the main “tool” that the Constitution gives to Congress to combat such presidential lawlessness and abuse of power is impeachment.

Impeach Bush, not Cheney (or get them both)

It is time to impeach for the constant infringements on our rights by the gov't.  The ever-growing list of violations:
They violate the 1st Amendment by opening mail, caging demonstrators and banning books like "America Deceived" from Amazon.
They violate the 2nd Amendment by confiscating guns during Katrina.
They violate the 4th Amendment  by conducting warrant-less wiretaps.
They violate the 5th and 6th Amendment by suspending habeas corpus.
They violate the 8th Amendment by torturing.
They violate the entire Constitution by starting 2 illegal wars based on lies and on behalf of a foriegn gov't.
Support Dr. Ron Paul and end this madness.

Why Cheney first...

You impeach Cheney first.

After impeachment, trial, conviction and removal, there will be plenty of evidence from the Cheney trial to file for impeachment of Bush.

Here's the most important thing...

As soon as Cheny is removed, Bush will nominate his replacement (probably Rice) but that needs to be tied up and not approved by the senate (shouldn't be hard, only takes 40 dedicated Dems to stall that approval).

Then, Bush can be impeached, tried, convicted and removed.  Without a sitting Vice President, Speaker Polosi would take the position of POTUS, and could summarily dismiss the entire cabinet, who could then be impeached (after leaving) so that they could never serve again in a "position of honor in the United States Government."

All this can be done in about 180 days if they move smoothly and quickly, and they can continue the business of government while they do it with short recesses for votes.

Charlie, so your plan is

Impeach Cheney in the House, then get 16 Reps to Convict in the Senate with Pelosi next in line.  Not.   Let Bush appoint the V.P.  Not.

Impeachment  and conviction of Bush/Cheney only works if Pelosi agrees to be replaced (for one day) to allow the House Dems to elect a anti-Bush Rep as speaker and to move up to replace Bush.  Only then would you have the votes to convict in the Senate.  Then House Dems return Pelosi to the speaker job. (with no V.P.  she is next in line)

Tipping Point

I would have hoped we had reached the tipping point before 2004, but without going into the gory details of that major disappointment, we rolled right into the latest kick in the teeth with the refunding of the continued slaughter in Iraq.

Long ago impeachment wasn't just a carrot dangled as a last resort before the masses. It was what was expected when a crime was suspected, and from day one there had been reason to suspect this gang of crooks. Which is the rub, none of them ever hide a thing they did. Bush said the Constitution was nothing but a " ... God damn piece of paper", and "... it would be easier if he were the dictator."

We've watched nearly every day, with jaws dropping to the ground, the non-stop assault on all that we you hold dear by people that no decent person would want to ever be seem with. Tony Soprano looks good compared to the Bush's, Baker's, Cheney's and nearly everyone else associated with this lowest class of  criminals.

Which brings me to this ... I hope you're right, but I'm of the opinion that we don't need any more waves than we have already had ... I want a FUCKING Tsunami!!!

So why am I not hopeful? Probably because one has to think just how far down a society has to go to allow such people to even come close to gaining such power and think that same society, especially in this age of mass media control, has the ability to wrench control from these ruthless sociopaths who have formed powerful unions over centuries and think we're going to crush them in such as short period of time just through an impeachment proceeding is frankly beyond my comprehension.

Don't get me wrong. I hope you're right. I hope we have reached that tipping point. It's just that maybe I think we reached it so long ago and our time is not getting any longer.

Wishful Thinking!

One hardly reads about impeachment, except on OEN!

I agree with the wag who said we'll have President Kucinich before impeachment.

You've got nothing on Cheney.  But, impeach Bush and Cheney becomes POTUS.  Now if someone came up with proof they conspired in a false flag attack on 9/11 it would be altogether different.

Impeachment

Madam Speaker may be considering what's best for her party rather than what's best for the country and the world. Even in the first case she is totally mistaken as the polls show.

Impeachment Oath of Office

The Constitution says: "The senators and representatives ... shall be bound by oath or affirmation to support this Constitution... . Cheney also took an oath to support and defend the Constitution, an oath which he has violated many times in many ways. The only way We the People can protect the rights and privileges granted to us by the Constitution against such predators as Cheney is impeachment. By failing to impeach Cheney, Congress is violating its oath to protect the Constitution. Elected representatives who fail to support HR333 are virtually, if not in fact, endorsing all of the crimes committed by Cheney for which he can and should be impeached. There is nothing in the Constitution that says the House of Representatives should file articles of impeachment only if they know that the Senate will convict. Our Senators also swore to protect and defend the Constitution.  We the People will worry about the Senate after the House has done its duty.

My friend...

...I so hope you are right!.

I'm betting that we're going to see Pelosi and her anti-impeachment position swamped by the power of public pressure, and by the actions of those members of Congress who take the views of their constituents seriously.

It's about time someone listened! We need to make sure congress has no choice but to hear what we re saying. DUBYA, et al have come to the point where they don't even hide the fact they are lying. They flaunt their arrogance, criminality and stupidity to an unbelievable and frightening level. It's like they are daring congress to come and get them. I say it's time for congress to take that dare.

Impeachment isn't about the party. It's about the crimes. It's about out and out treason. It's about the "law and order" set getting a dose of much needed law and order. If DUBYA was a Democrat, a Whig, a Libertarian even, you bet your ass I'd be screaming just as loudly for his removal from office.

We The People need to keep our voices heard! We ignore this grave responsibility at our continued peril!

Blessed be!
Pappy

Its all about High Treason

The Treason exists in all our three main branchs.  Impeachment will only happen by an overwhelming out cry from "WE THE PEOPLE".  Otherwise the Corporate bribes will still run the show.
