During the Gulf War between 1990 and 1991 the United States military incurred: 467 individuals wounded in action, 148 killed in battle, and 145
killed in other than battle (i.e. accidents). Therefore, the total number of US Gulf War casualties was 760 at the time of redeployment.

The United States Department of Veterans Affairs' Veterans Benefit Administration Office of Performance Analysis and Integrity Data and Information Services Gulf War Veterans Information System report that was just published (May 2002) states that as of May 2002: 696,778 individuals had served during the Gulf War with 572,833 individuals now eligible for Department of Veterans Affairs benefits to include lifetime medical care, financial compensation, and a lifetime pension.

As of May 2002, 206,861 veterans had filed claims for benefits based on service-connected injuries and illnesses caused by Gulf War combat related duties. Department of Veterans Affairs officials have processed 183,249 claims for medical care, compensation, and pension, determining that for 159,238 veterans their injuries and illnesses are service connected, caused by Gulf War exposures and injuries. Consequently they have been awarded lifetime medical care, compensation, and pensions based on the extent of their medical problems.

The VA still has claims from 23,612 individuals pending while they have denied benefits to 24,011 veterans.

SINCE THE CESSATION OF GULF WAR HOSTILITIES IN 1991; AN ADDITIONAL 8,013 VETERANS HAVE DIED FROM SERVICE CONNECTED INJURIES AND EXPOSURES INCURRED DURING OPERATION DESERT SHIELD AND OPERATION DESERT STORM.

The implications of this official report are staggering! As of May 2002, the Gulf War casualties include 8,306 veterans dead and 159,705 veterans injured or ill as a consequence of wartime service to our nation. The official May 2002 Department of Veteran Affairs report classifies 168,011 individuals as "disabled veterans". That reflects a staggering casualty rate of 29.3% for combat related duties between 1990 and 1991.

We still know that many sick veterans have not submitted claims. We also know that some veterans have received disability benefits directly from the military. Thus the actual casualty rate from combat during 1990-1991 is probably higher than the 29.3% rate the new VA report verifies. However, combat activities did not stop in 1991. Therefore, since August 1991 a cumulative total of 1,127,458 individuals have been deployed to the Gulf with 851480 veterans now eligible for veterans benefits.

Consequently the VA officially recognizes in the May 2002 report that a total of 262,586 individuals are "disabled veterans" due to duty in the Gulf and that
10,617 veterans have died of combat related injuries or illnesses since the initiation of the Gulf War during August 1990. . . .

This was written in September 2002, pointing out the casualty potential of a second Gulf War. The figures are impressive – 10,617 veterans dying of combat related injuries or illnesses stemming from their Gulf War service. But nowhere near the 73,000 claimed by the writer.

The Biggest Problem

The biggest problem for the left is a tendency to exaggerate or misrepresent fact. It gives the right an excuse to attack anything threatening their ill-gotten cash flow.  The following are two examples of where the neo-con goons could attack this report.

OK, the 53k in Nam were combat deaths. How many more died from disease and accidents? Long term effects? Probably over 200k.   Since the 73K for the Gulf is from all causes, comparing the two wars is like comparing apples and oranges, and the right gets an unjustified arguing point.

Then there are the 600 milligrams of Uranium. It is fairly widely known that the amount of uranium in the Hiroshima bomb was about two and a half kilograms. Maybe the 600 milligrams were the U-235 as opposed to the much greater amount of non-fissionable U-238 (Hope I didn't get them mixed up, I'd better research before I publish this).  But either way, the report can be attacked as misrepresenting the truth.

We have to be better than these morons and thugs.    We have a higher standard.  Let us not let them catch us with questions of fact.

The numbers we are seeing are only part of the story

73 thousand dead is an official number we can quote from the Department of Veterans Affairs.  However, in reality millions are already dead from this illegal and outrageous invasion of a nation where the U.S. has no business.

 

Little Boy, the bomb dropped on Hiroshima, contained 64 kg of uranium, of which 0.7 kg underwent nuclear fission, and of this mass only 0.6 g became energy. 

I agree it is important to avoid any controversial issues so as to focus on the key element which is the illegal use of Weapons of Mass Destruction by the U.S. in the illegal invasion of Iraq.

Truly, the amount of nuclear waste exploded into Iraq, Afghanistan and other nations by the U.S. is of such an extraordinary high quantity that all of us in the U.S. have been made legally libel for the world’s worst ecological disaster.  This amount of uranium exploded into the environment is an extraordinary crime.  We will modify our pages on Liberty For Life to avoid this sort of controversy.  Thank you.

 

Do not be mistaken the different isotopes of uranium are just as deadly.  Depleted uranium is about 60% less radioactive than Enriched uranium both can be used to make atomic bombs.

 

We absolutely have to challenge the government and mainstream media on why they are not telling the public the truth.

We strongly recommend making issue regarding the indisputable fact that the Federal Reserve Bank is private and has been the main cause of instability in our economy and world.  When Hussein stopped selling oil in Fed Notes we went to war because the private share holders in the Federal Reserve Bank immediately started loosing billions of dollars.  They feared other oil producers would follow suit.

That was not at all clear until I checked a part of the pdf document. Perhaps if I wend my way through more of it, I will be able to understand the non-deployed statistics. Mind you, this does NOT include the impact on the Brits, or the French of the first Gulf War. This 36% disabled represents those who were healthy men and women who are mostly in their twenties, thirties and forties now. What a drain on our nation. What a loss for our economy. Of course, there's no mention of the women sickened through sexual contact with returning men or children born disabled. That DU is wicked.

The worst part is the evil genius of product names. Depleted Uranium, is not at all depleted, as I am sure you all know, it has a half-life of 4.5 billion years, roughly the life so far of our planet. Soldiers bringing back death to their loved ones.

as I came here specifically to mention that as Lauren Moret has brought that up for a NUMBER of years; this is not recent information.

I posted an item a few months back on my blog about Canada being complicit in its use in Afghanistan. This is a Canadian national DISGRACE. Don't EVER talk to me about Canadian peacemaking again while I can draw breath.

Canisters containing du where found on Algonquin territory at the time of the Days of Action here in Ontario marked "Lebanon". This and the encroachment of Frontenac Ventures has led to another great Canadian standoff between federales, provincialistas and NDNS and local supporters. NOw, it's spreading .. Greenpeace and others have joined the fight.

What does THAT Have to do with war dead: if anyone is expert on du, its natives and they put a disporportionate number of people in the Armed Forces. This makes their antinuke protests more a living breathing force. It's just one MORE way genocide is achieved here in America, here in Canada (no we are not in the coalition but there are certainly Garda mercenaries over there from here.)

We have had NO idea how many deaths this war (and Afghanistan nor Lebanon nor ...) generating although I have asked those I thought would know REPEATEDLY about this for over three years.

"WHO IS KEEPING count of those who die in Germany? Those who die after getting back to the US?" I would ask. Even those around Cindy Sheehan were really not keeping aware of the stats as they grew. We have no idea how many mercenaries are dieing, or what percentage or anything. Whether we like mercenaries or NOT, they are people and all have families, even if they are highly misguided.

It does no good to minimize the disaster in this entire fiasco; eventually the truth will out.

Surely the author of this story could read.

The DVA numbers quoted in this article do NOT reflect the numbers given in the report referenced.

First off the Report includes ALL veterans active duty and reserves from 1990 until present.

Total Theater deaths during this time reported are 4,330

Total Deployed deaths ( meaning deployed ANYWHERE) 17, 847

Total deaths for the era ( meaning ANY death of a veteran who served at any time from 1990 until the present even if they were out of the service at the time of death) is 55, 999.

Real Numbers

Bob, as GitarChris correctly pointed out the actual number of Vietnam veterans who died as a consequence of that absurd war, were far in excess of the official 55 thousand the government listed.  Most of the Gulf War Vets are dieing from radiation poisoning, we have earlier reports listing 21 thousand dead from doctors studying the problem (see http://www.libertyforlife.com/military-war/wmd.html) 

Our government is refusing to acknowledge the problem or the real numbers.  For example what exactly is Undiagnosed Illness “UDX”?  Vets serving in 1990 are not going to be dead from old age by 2007.  Because the government is hiding the truth, the Dept of Veteran’s affairs total number of dead Gulf War vets is the only real number from which we can really determine how many soldiers have died.  One could perhaps assume that 10% or less of the 73K total died from natural causes.  Would one list the massive increase of suicides by soldiers, as natural or as a cause of the illegal invasion?

It is good to see discussion and questioning of numbers.  These are Official Numbers and they are real, just as real as the invasion of Iraq, Afghanistan and other sovereign nations is not different to Hitler’s invasion of Poland and other sovereign nations.  The reality is the gravity of the situation, something clearly the government is desperate to cover-up, just like they covered up their explicit involvement in perpetrating 9/11. 

We strongly encourage you and others to learn about the ties between supporters of Hitler and our current administration and Federal Reserve Bank.  Until we acknowledge the incest and gravity of the situation we cannot hope to fix the problem.   We have a serious problem, raw facts prove our government is utterly out of control.  Former Attorney General Gonzales should for example be going to jail.  He certainly would send you to jail for much less than the crimes he was caught in.  Bush’s new appointee for Attorney General, Michael B. Murkasey, was cover-up Chief of the Official Corruption Unit of the Attorney General's office and Yale Bones Club Satan worshiper who gave billions of dollars to the people who blew up the World Trade Center!  And mainstream media is praising him for being just and honest! 

These Dept of Vet’s Affairs number help drive through reality, however, in all reality we need to get these criminals out of government.
