We all receive anonymous cell phone calls from time to time. For some people persistent calls may even pose a problem. And sometimes, phone numbers that appear on our caller IDs just need verifying for other reasons, like getting more information about the person who your daughter is dating, for example. If you think that this scenario is not the most common reason why people use reverse phone directories, think again. People use such directories to check suspicious numbers to make sure their kids stay out of trouble and their partners are faithful.

In order to perform a reverse lookup, you will basically have several options. The first option is to go to White Pages or Yellow Pages websites and type in the number in their search box. Another option is to use a search engine. Both of these have limitations. White Pages can track only land line published numbers which are listed in phone books. And Google can only help you track the number if its owner dropped it on some website such as MySpace which is unlikely.

Even if people post their contact details online, they seldom include their cell phone number because of privacy concerns. Most of us won't be happy with telemarketers calling or texting our cells. Another concern is the stalkers. People do not want their personal details to end up in the wrong hands.

For the above reasons, a national cell phone directory has never been established in the United States and most of Europe. Cell phone lookups by name are still considered violation of privacy and law.

Verifying someone's identity whose number popped up on your phone screen is another matter. Since this person has tried to contact you in the first place, you can check who it is especially in the case of repeated calls. In such a cases a reverse cell phone lookup can be performed. One directory that can help you look up cell phone numbers is FreeCellSearch.com This service can be used to do a reverse lookup and view the name of a person to whome the number belongs.

In most cases, you will be able to find out who is the phone owner but in some cases the database may return an empty result. Again, as I mentioned earlier, this happens because their is no central directory of cell phone numbers.

While reverse directories are widely used nowadays by many people from suspicious spouses to journalists, it should be noted that you should only use such a directory for legal purposes only.
