The Sun just entered the sign of Cancer on June 21st, the Summer Solstice when we celebrate the sacred marriage of Heaven and Earth. The Sun brings the North long days of light and heat, and yet Cancer is a cardinal water sign, a water sign in motion, pulled in tides by its ruler, the Moon. Cancer brings us moisture, the nurturing rains to help the crops grow; the psychic waters that stir the soul.

We have come halfway around the Wheel of the Year from Winter Solstice 2013. On Summer Solstice, the Holly King fought the Oak King and once again won that eternal battle. The old year and the Light will begin to decline. But it feels like we gave birth to the Light out of great darkness last winter. Look around you--people are beginning to wake up to what's really going on in the world. While the old is still fighting to maintain dominance over us, it feels like the tide is turning. And that's where this New Moon in Cancer can help.

Whenever we come to the New Moon, we begin a new cycle of activity. As the Moon waxes to fullness, we engage in activities which express the season. After the Full Moon during the waning Moon, we tend to withdraw into ourselves a bit more, considering what we accomplished in the previous two weeks. If you work with the Moon cycle, you'll understand how to use the different energies. For example, summer is the season when we feel most free--we hang out at the beach, we party, we go on vacations, we go outside. It's a time of year for fun, friends, food and family. But then we need a break from everyone, and we retreat back into ourselves, picking up a great novel, spending more time in the garden, lazing on a summer afternoon. If we develop a good rhythm, we move to the music of the Universe, we move to the rhythm of the Moon.

A New Moon in Cancer is the time to plant some emotional seeds. Cancer symbolizes the Great Mother of Life, the Cosmic Womb. Out of this womb the whole world was born, both physically and psychically. Cancer symbolizes the movement of the oceans, the stirring of the waters that creates new Life. The symbol of Cancer can either represent the female and male seeds that create new life or a Mother's breasts, which feed new life.

Cancer is all about creativity, which is a hallmark of our uniqueness. Our children are unique expressions of both Mom and Dad; our creative abilities express essential aspects of our soul--our feelings about life. Our watery, psychic depths can give birth to the Divine Child within us--there is no limit on our creativity. It all depends on the health of our emotional body. The more emotionally wounded we feel, the less likely we will allow ourselves to conceive and give birth to what's within us.

Each year we are given the opportunity to re-birth our emotional body during the month when the Sun is in the sign of Cancer. The Sun symbolizes our identity, and in its yearly cycle, we pick up and/or shed parts of our personality that serve our life's purpose. When the Sun is in Cancer, it provides us with the opportunity to re-birth our psychic awareness of our essential Self. We ask ourselves during Aries, "Who am I?", during Taurus, "What do I have?" and during Gemini "What do I think?" Now in Cancer we get to ask ourselves, "What do I feel about my life? And what am I going to do about it?"

Feelings and intuitions, dreams and imagination are ways to connect with our Soul. The Soul's language is symbolic, and if we want to life a soul-full life, we need to include It's perceptions in our ego calculations. Therefore, it is up to each of us to learn our Mother tongue if we want to live happy and fulfilled lives. Our left-brain, patriarchal rationality has been high-jacked by 'the economy' and all the attendant wars, worries and wasted time discussing things that it so enjoys. We have forgotten the power of our Soul. It's time to reclaim it.

Along with the Moon, which is Cancer's ruling planet, we see that this sign is about the archetypal Mother, the nurturer, the giver of form, the bestower of life and death--the Good Mother Kwan Yin or the Terrible Mother Kali. The Great Mother has been split up in the West between the Good and Terrible Mother, but in reality, she is One. Life is what it is, and it is also the womb of our spiritual growth. Our trials are our tests, and when we come out of them, we often find the prize or gift we've earned. We grow in Wisdom.

The Love we experience from the positive Mother is strong and sure--it does not fail us, even when we fail ourselves. Mother love is filled with understanding, sympathy and acceptance. It's the best kind of love to help us become who we are meant to be. Cancer and the Moon invest emotional energy into the things and people they love--and they expect to see results! All that emotion has to go someplace, and if it gets stuck in expectations, it will always disappoint. So put your own emotional energy to work for you before you invest it in others. Then you'll be a clear mountain spring of refreshment to them rather than a burden of unfulfilled dreams.

The Cancer New Moon 2014

The Cancer New Moon occurs on June 27th at 1:08am PDT/ 4:08am EDT/ 8:08am GMT.

The Sabian symbol for the Sun and the Moon at 6* Cancer is: Innumerable birds are busy feathering their nests. This is an image of an instinctual response to the presence of new life. We need to feel competent and emotionally secure before we can venture out into a new life. What have you built that assures you of that security? If you don't find that source within yourself, you'll never find it without. We are preparing for a rebirth of ourselves and our culture and we need to prepare ourselves. Where do you want to flourish? What are you called to do?
