Kucinich Opposes Bailout and asks, "Is this the United States Congress or the board of directors of Goldman Sachs?" WASHINGTON, D.C. (September 28, 2008) -- Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) today made the following speech on the floor of the House of Representatives regarding the proposed Wall Street bailout:
"The $700 billion bailout for Wall Street, is driven by fear not fact. This is too much money in too a short a time going to too few people while too many questions remain unanswered.
Why aren't we having hearings on the plan we have just received? Why aren't we questioning the underlying premise of the need for a bailout with taxpayers' money? Why have we not considered any alternatives other than to give $700 billion to Wall Street? Why aren't we asking Wall Street to clean up its own mess? Why aren't we passing new laws to stop the speculation, which triggered this? Why aren't we putting up new regulatory structures to protect investors? How do we even value the $700 billion in toxic assets?
"Why aren't we helping homeowners directly with their debt burden? Why aren't we helping American families faced with bankruptcy. Why aren't we reducing debt for Main Street instead of Wall Street? Isn't it time for fundamental change in our debt based monetary system, so we can free ourselves from the manipulation of the Federal Reserve and the banks? Is this the United States Congress or the board of directors of Goldman Sachs? Wall Street is a place of bears and bulls. It is not smart to force taxpayers to dance with bears or to follow closely behind the bulls.

Good man
Just when you think their are no good men, Kucinich or Feingold pop up. Unfortunately, Dennis gave up after being shorted at the debates and Feingold, honorable as it is, thought he could do more for Wisconsin as a Senator. Would you like to rethink that now Russ? by kato krause (2 articles, 0 quicklinks, 3 diaries, 216 comments [1 recommended, 0 rejected]) on Sunday, Sep 28, 2008 at 2:36:12 PM

It's a great question, but unfortunately the answer is
(at least metaphorically) "it's the board of directors of Goldman Sachs." The US Congress attends only to the interests of the financial elite. This is not a recent development (though admittedly, it used to be done less blatantly than it's now being done). by Richard Mynick (2 articles, 4 quicklinks, 1 diaries, 1552 comments [255 recommended, 5 rejected]) on Sunday, Sep 28, 2008 at 3:37:38 PM

Yes... He is a good man... HE CAN'T DO IT ALONE !!!!
C'mon people. Not only is this the biggest federal bail out ever... IT IS THE BIGGEST IN-YOUR-FACE CONGRESSIONAL SELL-OUT EVER. If this goes through, there is no more need for $$$$$$$$, democracy is out the window... oppression and war are the status quo. We need to motivate, we need to do it now. IMPEACHMENT IS IMPERATIVE.... Moreover... PERSECUTION. http://pdamerica.org/articles/alliances/2008-09-27-10-42-53-alliances.php A NEW TOOL IN THE ARSENAL... criminal charges and un-doing the damage... and holding accountable everyone involved. by bucketslogg (0 articles, 0 quicklinks, 0 diaries, 259 comments [99 recommended, 0 rejected]) on Sunday, Sep 28, 2008 at 3:56:24 PM

MSM MIA as Usual
I find it odd that the MSM is not covering at all that progressive Democrats are not going to be for this bailout. People like Kucinich, Marcy Kaptur, I would assume (if they are true to their values) most if not all of the progressive caucus in the house. Of course, then again when does the media ever cover progressive Democrats. I guess with the size of this story I thought they'd be doing better reporting than usual (but that doesn't seem to be the case). by Sean Fenley (7 articles, 41 quicklinks, 65 diaries, 264 comments [4 recommended, 0 rejected]) on Sunday, Sep 28, 2008 at 5:08:48 PM

Congressman Kucinch
First, Congressman Kucinich did not give up. He still goes to WORK every day, fighting for our rights and all other aspects of The Constituyin of the United States of America (a copy of which he always carries in his jacket). I suggest that all who read this go to his website http://www.kucinich.us and read, first, his piece titled Protecting the Public Interest in Any Economic "Bailout". This organized piece was his mental scratch paper. The next day, he issued Kucinich's Main Street Recovery Plan. Everything is specific, no loose ends; in language both parliamentary, yet sensible and accessible to all. Representative Kucinich is a fighter, and he knows how to present his facts. And he is the same openhearted, compassionate, no-nonsense guy he has always been. I find his plan to ne economically SOUND, socially relevant, and reflective of his personal integrity. by Anne Kennedy Rackham (0 articles, 0 quicklinks, 0 diaries, 5 comments) on Sunday, Sep 28, 2008 at 5:35:55 PM

If Dennis ran his campaign...
and paid attention to his best advocates, as well as he writes and does his homework, he would now be winning against McCain. And if we were worthy of being president, he absolutely would have... Reply: Weren't you there?
The mainstream corporate media excluded him from debating. Unless you are trying to sling some more mud, you must have been living under a rock to have missed it. For the benefit of the doubt you can simply google: mainstream media disappears kucinich from primary debates. by bucketslogg (0 articles, 0 quicklinks, 0 diaries, 259 comments [99 recommended, 0 rejected]) on Sunday, Sep 28, 2008 at 9:22:29 PM

Hopefully, Dennis and a few other members of Congress
will be able to derail the latest Bush bailout a.k.a. rip-off!!! Could it be a case of the Bush Administration looking the other way while all kinds of scamming was going on? Let's see. Bush I is ruling during the Savings and Loan bail out, and Bush II is ruling when the banks need to be bailed out. Does anyone see a pattern here? Find out who caused this mess and learn a better way to get out of it. Please check it out, and pass it along to your friends. Also, use the link Help the Victims, Not the Scam Artists! to send a message to your members of Congress and your local newspaper telling them what you think about the latest Bush engineered crisis! This is the Truth
Technically, the US is simply a huge corporation where all industries are bound together under interlocking directorships, and government provides the administrative and regulatory infrastructure that allows them to exploit labour of all nations for profit. They also provide security services at home and abroad. Congress is on the Board of Directors. The President is the CEO Secretary of Treasury is the CFO Department of Commerce is the COO US Inc is owned by the British Crown, and has been since the treaty of Paris in 1783 when the King dictated the terms of our existence. We are free so long as we pay tribute. Unfortunately, the Queen is getting ready to foreclose since we are bankrupt. This 700 billion is just a down payment buying us a bit more time. US Inc valuable corporate assets, and government assets (military, intelligence) and resources will be seized as part of the foreclosure process and reorganized into the new global corporation called Global Inc. for lack of a better name. The rest of us get left behind and we will all become farmers to feed the world to pay off our debt, or something like that. by pft (0 articles, 0 quicklinks, 0 diaries, 601 comments [7 recommended, 0 rejected]) on Sunday, Sep 28, 2008 at 8:08:15 PM

One of the few men in government worth listening to
... to bad no one is. It speaks volumes about the state of our government that those tht speak with reason are regulated to the fringe. Without a doubt, Kucinich was best of the entire field of cadidates, hence it's why he was shut-out early by powers-that-be. by Mr M (8 articles, 0 quicklinks, 66 diaries, 2845 comments [654 recommended, 27 rejected]) on Monday, Sep 29, 2008 at 8:59:19 AM

Whistleblowers Tried to Stop Market Meltdown & Need to be Pr
I was impressed by your article. One important aspect that should not be missed is that Whistleblowers Tried to Stop Market Meltdown & Need to be Protected in Any Fix. http://www.opednews.com/articles/Whistleblowers-Tried-to-St-by-Jesselyn-Radack-080924-582.html I hope that you will support the Whistleblower protection act, and ask all your friends and public interest groups to also support it. This whole fiasco could have been avoided, should have been avoided. It must be avoided in the future. kucinich was our FDR but the powers that be said NO!
I am confused by those who don't seem to understand that the corporate press isn't on our side. Look at the roster of owners and managers and you see the very same types that are in Congress and Senate and Presidency as to what is 'conservative' which really doesn't say what they really are. It is more in line with authoritarianism which covers every type of and kind of dictatorship. The main ones of those are the Dominionists who wish to finish taking over our country and are near doing it. Kucinich is one of the few, still alive, that stands in their way. by nightgaunt (0 articles, 0 quicklinks, 0 diaries, 448 comments [27 recommended, 0 rejected]) on Monday, Sep 29, 2008 at 12:43:39 PM

Dennis is my hero
He fills the shoes of the greatest of the Founders. He speaks truth to power and he is no whimp. They came and threatened him and he didn't back down. He ran them off. If it was 1776, he'd be one of those Founders. he IS the statesman that all Representatives SHOULD be. The bailout failed and boy were they mumbling the tales of Mushrooms and smoking guns. This bailout was nothing more than leaving the back door to Fort Knox open. by shirley reese (0 articles, 0 quicklinks, 0 diaries, 592 comments [98 recommended, 1 rejected]) on Monday, Sep 29, 2008 at 9:05:17 PM

Kucinich
Never thought I'd be agreeing with him, but I'm certainly doing so with this bail out... By they way, you guys calling this the Bush bail out... most of the democrats are right in there with Bush, the difference being they want to add more garbage to an already bad bill! Thank God for the democrats and republicans who had the courage to vote no!!!! by Armon Pacetti (0 articles, 0 quicklinks, 0 diaries, 21 comments) on Monday, Sep 29, 2008 at 9:24:47 PM
