Associated Press (AP)-- the right wing syndicator counterpart to Fox Faux news, reports..., not, it's more like echos or trumpets the psychotic ramblings of Republican Georgia congressman Paul Broun, who warns of an Obama dictatorship. AP quotes nutjob Broun, "It may sound a bit crazy and off base, but the thing is, he's the one who proposed this national security force... I'm just trying to bring attention to the fact that we may — may not, I hope not — but we may have a problem with that type of philosophy of radical socialism or Marxism." Broun is referring to a speech Obama gave in July, when he discussed creating a civilian “force to take some of the burden off the military.”
Now, from my perspective, I read this as a very good thing, since Bush has violated a long held, good law—Posse Comitatus—that you don’t use the army for civilian work within the nation, because the army could become a tool of a rogue leader. So it seemed that Obama was correcting a highly egregious situation created by Bush.
But Associated Press, doing it’s job as propaganda arm for the right, and in this case, potentially flaming the craziness of the most extreme rightwing mental cases, to dangerous levels, it quotes fellow crazy right winger Broun,
"That's exactly what Hitler did in Nazi Germany and it's exactly what the Soviet Union did," Broun said. "When he's proposing to have a national security force that's answering to him, that is as strong as the U.S. military, he's showing me signs of being Marxist."
Finally, AP gets around to making it clear that Obama was talking about a civil service corps, and about expanding the Peace Corps, “to renew our diplomacy.”
Then, AP reports on Broun’s concern that;
Obama likely will move to ban gun ownership if he does build a national police force.
Obama has said he respects the Second Amendment right to bear arms and favors "common sense" gun laws. Gun rights advocates interpret that as meaning he'll at least enact curbs on ownership of assault weapons and concealed weapons. As an Illinois state lawmaker, Obama supported a ban on semiautomatic weapons and tighter restrictions on firearms generally.
"We can't be lulled into complacency," Broun said. "You have to remember that Adolf Hitler was elected in a democratic Germany. I'm not comparing him to Adolf Hitler. What I'm saying is there is the potential."
Not surprisingly, the AP didn’t get a response from the Obama campaign. But to me, this is more of the same kind of talk that Sarah Palin engaged in that produced calls from the crowd “kill him.”
It is not responsible, balanced journalism. It is dangerous, calculated use of the media to build fear, anger and to cultivate the mental state that leads to violence.
AP has the right, with the First Amendment, to report like this, and the crazy congressman has the right to confabulate his fantasies about Obama. But between the AP and the congressman, this crazy Folie à deux is dangerous. And it shows just how far-right AP has jumped off the deep end.

A litle clarification
Soviet Union never had a ' civilian task force'. In the Stalin's earllier period they did have youth organizations to help the political oppression. Later on those organizations evolved into 'voluntary people's law- order support' which patrolled the streets under the guidance of the regular police. But... the idea of so-called civilian corps in the US is a TERRIBLE IDEA because it has no purpose. Why? We already have plenty of organizations whose sole purpose are to.. police us. We have more than we can handle. As such.. I sincerely hope that Obama would NEVER EVEN TRY to implement that idea here. It would be much more productive to relook and revamp the real law- order organizations. NO SIR, I do not think we need more of unproductive, not useful and dangerous organizations we so far already have whether promoted by the President or not. by Mark Sashine (72 articles, 19 quicklinks, 269 diaries, 4101 comments [131 recommended, 0 rejected]) on Tuesday, Nov 11, 2008 at 9:33:08 AM

we have the state Reserve national guard. Already in existence. Then, there were the conservation corps-- benign, positive forces that have been good investments, not the malignant nonsense right wing paranoids spout. by Rob Kall (952 articles, 4177 quicklinks, 374 diaries, 2087 comments [45 recommended, 3 rejected]) on Tuesday, Nov 11, 2008 at 10:57:36 AM

Reply: The state national guard
is NOT a national police force. When I think of national police force, I think of the Nazi SS brown shirts. Why? because history has demonstrated that this is where these things go. Regardless, it is news, and it is VERY relevant. Ciao, CZ by steve scheetz (4 articles, 0 quicklinks, 3 diaries, 829 comments [52 recommended, 0 rejected]) on Tuesday, Nov 11, 2008 at 11:47:45 AM

Here's what I quoted: “force to take some of the burden off the military.” You turned that into "police." Diagnosis: Distorted, irrational thinking. this all got twisted like taffy
As a graduated Americorps volunteer, Obama was speaking of expanding these organizations and it was not meant as a "military police type organizing". It's groups that help with humanity, community organizing and leg work. Acting as a liaison for the city and neighborhoods, I progressed strategic plans for our many neighborhood task forces. Every group, for instance Peace corp, "help" ppl indirectly or directly. I believe that Obama's plan wasn't intended as Militant or "policing" as the right wing distorted and twisted it to make this idea as a Blackwater type group. If he wants policing, we got Blackwater...shucks...as was done in New Orleans. The proposal to have " in country service" for college students and others, isn't meant as policing but as communities organizing food distribution, energy help and planning, and general in country need supplying and problem solution. I see the most of you took the right wing twist and ate the taffy of falsehoods. The reason for this "service" is to offer education assistance to students and others (one earns the funding), and various other rewards for service to our country--not militant or policing. That's the right wing SPIN. Bush CUT the funding for Americorps , Peacecorps, and other volunteer for EDU reward programs. Obama's just RE implementing an old idea of John Kerry's. If I am wrong, go ahead and clear it up, but I have read Obama's plan on this and other left wing articles, and it is noT a policing idea like the rightie nazis say it is. Yes, it costs tax revenue (minimal)from tax payers and thus, the most likely that these fat rich republicans hate it. by shirley reese (0 articles, 0 quicklinks, 0 diaries, 592 comments [98 recommended, 1 rejected]) on Tuesday, Nov 11, 2008 at 2:11:48 PM

Reply: What is not clear about . . .
"We cannot continue to rely on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives we've set. We've got to have a civilian national security force that's just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded." And I heard him make the statement. You can hear it yourself on Google Video. I could not believe my ears. Shirley, you are the one making the spin. Do not kid yourself. President-elect Obama is not stupid. He knows crime is out of control. He was talking police. This goes back at least to Ronal Reagan and the War on Drugs, if not earlier. Each administration has further militarized the police. We are making baby steps in each administration, Republican or Democrat, to a full Police State. by Mike Kimball (4 articles, 0 quicklinks, 0 diaries, 87 comments [67 recommended, 0 rejected]) on Wednesday, Nov 12, 2008 at 1:50:19 PM

Obama will tighten gun control
Obama has a long history of being against private gun ownership. I wonder where he stands on the hundreds of FEMA prison camps that have sprouted up around the country? He's already reversed himself on the FISA wiretapping bill, and ending the war in Iraq. Obama is perhaps more dangerous than Bush, due to his cult like following, and control of both houses of Congress (although Bush had his way with a democratic Congress too). I know everyone says give him a chance, but this is not starting out well. How about the Banker Bailout he supported? Obama is just another puppet in a long line of puppets, I fear. by ronheri (0 articles, 0 quicklinks, 0 diaries, 256 comments [45 recommended, 0 rejected]) on Tuesday, Nov 11, 2008 at 4:06:50 PM

I return
I am an active Obama supporter. My son and his wife are in Peace Corps. But you cannot run a country as a community. Moreover, community is organized and country- you serve it. Obama is a brilliant man, I believe he will see the difference. I believe also and my son and all volunteers I know- that we do not need any new organizations. We need to improve the ones we have. Also some must be eliminated like Homeland Security, for instance. I repeat- any so- called Nationa civilianl force is a terrible idea and it will not only harm the cause but sure as Hell will turn the electorate against the good and worthy way Obama projects so far. by Mark Sashine (72 articles, 19 quicklinks, 269 diaries, 4101 comments [131 recommended, 0 rejected]) on Tuesday, Nov 11, 2008 at 6:06:18 PM

Broun and Chambliss: The Anti-Marketing of Georgia
I live and vote in Broun's GA-10th District. Republican Rep. Paul Broun and Sen. Saxby Chambliss along with the GOPs "born-again" Moses, Newt Gingrich, are mean old white men of the 'racist' kind. The word 'racist' in the prior sentence can be subtituted with the words 'homophobic,' 'mysognistic,' 'chickenhawks,' or 'other,' and yet be describing the same individual. Chambliss and Broun do no favors for Georgia with their bellicose blustering. Like it or not, mean old white men, it's an Obama Adminstration, and you are sh*t out of power. Many states, including Georgia, have deficits. Guess who is not going to be asked to the prom, Broun and Chambliss? Misinformation and Fear Are the Breeding Ground of Fascism
From reading some of the comments regarding Rep. Broun's pronouncements, it is obvious that the least bit of research has not been accomplished prior to various degrees of bloviating posing as rational thought having been posted here and elsewhere, but most especially on Fox News. The speech from which Rep. Broun quotes is easily accessible through a simple web search and, when taken within the context of the entire speech, it is quite obvious that President-elect Obama is not speaking about a civilian police corp at all. Rep. Broun is espousing falsehoods and engendering fear where none was ever intended. Obama's visions must be blinding to some and that is quite understandable when one has been living mole-like in darkness for the past eight years. I think it wise and prudent to stop and question ourselves when our brother speaks of 'peace, peace' and yet some shout "I see nothing but evil." The Bush years have taught us quite clearly that ignorance breeds fear and that ignorance can only be dispelled by a healthy dose of the light and of truth, of high values and of higher ideals. If there is to be fear from Obama's programs, the fear will merely be that of those who in their ignorance will be left behind as the rest of us work in concert towards fulfillment of greater dreams than have ever been dreamt by the present administration. If some of us mistake Obama's vision for evil and darkness, is the mistake upon him or upon us? by Joseph Selby (0 articles, 0 quicklinks, 0 diaries, 1 comments) on Wednesday, Nov 12, 2008 at 7:05:59 AM

Reply: mystery
http://hotair.com/archives/2008/07/17/are-the-media-airbrushing-obamas-speeches/ the above states that the quoted words of Obama had afterwards somehow disappeared from the text of that speech ( July2). But I did read that speech again and as much as I admire our President- elect that speech sounded to me like a speech of a person who overused his perceptions. Too many 'corpses' ( I deliberately make it funny) to my taste. We really do not need ' Energy Corps' for instance. We need good energy policy and good people. I am also not sure about that community service thing. US is not Harlem. As such I think Obama has this ' community organizer' attitude which has pluses and minuses. That speech is a minus, sorry. by Mark Sashine (72 articles, 19 quicklinks, 269 diaries, 4101 comments [131 recommended, 0 rejected]) on Wednesday, Nov 12, 2008 at 2:29:15 PM
