End the Somali Pirate Problem Once and For All - Mr. Obama, Implement the "B.O.S.S. Plan" - Now

Enough Already!

The report of an American ship captain being held hostage by Somali pirates demonstrates the current disparate and uncoordinated U.S. and other nations anti-piracy strategies are not working, at all. It chalks up to nothing but ineptitude by those tasked to protect and yet one more successful booty call for the pirates. 

Mr. Obama and Ms. Clinton, it's time to end this growing scourge on the high seas once and for all. Accordingly, it's incumbent upon you both to embrace and enact the "B.O.S.S. Plan" (see link below).

After a brief artificial respite the last 2-3 months, the pirate activity is again picking up, now boldly for the first time pirates attacking U.S. flagged ships, specifically the Maersk Alabama. This most recent pirate attack too being the sixth in a week.  

Quoting from the article:

Cmdr. Jane Campbell, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Navy's Bahrain-based 5th Fleet, said that “it was the first pirate attack involving U.S. nationals and a U.S.-flagged vessel in recent memory."

The article highlights the weakness in the current strategy, in that this latest hijacked ship was hundreds of miles from a U.S. Navy warship. The Navy admits it can't cover the entire Gulf of Aden alone. Not can any other Navy on its own. This ship (and others in the future) therefore simply had no chance, as Somali pirates have identified and are now exploiting the gaping geographic holes in the anti-piracy strategies of the individual nations navies deployed to the region.

The only way to solve the Somali pirate program is a coordinated and integrated multi-national "Gulf of Aden Umbrella and Strike" strategy directed from Djibouti.
