The American people badly need some good, uplifting news to alleviate the stress and anxiety that comes from living in a nation that, quite obviously, is caught in a state of decline and regression. They need to see and hear positive Breaking News that speaks of progress rather than the constant negativity of endless war, a deteriorating economy, a government in gridlock and a dysfunctional society. But will that ever happen?
Breaking News: Congress has enacted legislation to increase taxes on the wealthiest Americans along the lines of the Buffet Rule. After many years of protecting and advancing the interests of the 1% of this nation who control up to 40% of its wealth, and seeing the U.S. economy deteriorating as the middle class continues to be decimated, the Republican leadership has finally agreed that a fair and reasonable tax increase for those who make more than $1 million per year is absolutely necessary to restore stability to this nation.
In a historic agreement between Congressional Democrats and Republicans, the Medicare program will be extended to all Americans, thereby creating a universal health care system. This move will guarantee that each and every citizen of this country will receive the same health care benefits, and America will finally have a cost effective system that matches those of the other 30 industrialized nations of the world.
A bipartisan Congress has passed legislation that mandates that the president must seek and obtain a 2/3 majority approval by the Congress before taking any military action within the borders of any sovereign nation. The president can no longer unilaterally order the military to launch an attack and/or occupy any other nation unless that nation poses an imminent and dangerous threat to America. If any president does so independently, without congressional authority, he or she will be subject to immediate impeachment proceedings.
It's being reported that the White House and the Pentagon have approved a plan by which the number of U.S. military installations and troops in overseas nations will be significantly reduced. Stay tuned for more details. The estimated annual savings from these reductions is estimated to be more than $500 billion. Even with these cutbacks the U.S. military will still be the most powerful in the world by far and the American people will be more than safe and secure.
Just Announced: Congress has just passed legislation designed to return a great deal of manufacturing to this nation. Corporations will be given very generous tax breaks and special incentives for transferring jobs from China and other overseas nations back to America. Conversely, those corporations who utilize large numbers of foreign manufacturing labor and refuse to return jobs to America, will be subject to very severe tax penalties. In this same legislation, any nation that has instituted tariffs on imports of U.S. products will have like tariffs placed on their imports to this country.
This Just In: The president, in a statement from the Rose Garden, has just made it known that Israel and Iran have signed a peace treaty which will avoid an impending war. This is great news for those who have been working so hard to promote such a peace agreement. It follows the recent Israeli/Palestinian initiative that lays down a specific plan leading to a two-state solution. These developments came after a series of high level meetings between officials of the U.S. and Israel in which the leaders of Israel were explicitly told that America would no longer support or condone any further incendiary actions which would prevent the establishment of a peaceful Middle East.
After intensive meetings in the Congress , with the involvement of White House representatives, funds were approved for a massive program to repair and rebuild this nation's infrastructure. Returning veterans, as they leave the service, will be given a very high priority in obtaining the associated jobs. Almost all of this funding has been appropriated by transfers from the Defense Dept. and the Pentagon. The rapidly deteriorating infrastructure will now be repaired and rebuilt, creating millions of badly need jobs for Americans.
The president has announced that funds have been approved for an ambitious, high priority program to, once again, make America the leader in world education. The federal government and the states will collaborate on new educational initiatives that will dramatically increase the level of this nation's academic achievements. Once again, the necessary funds have been made available by the large reduction in the Defense Dept. budget and the cutting back of U.S. military installations around the world.
Following the newly reconstituted Supreme Court's reversal of the Citizens United case where U.S. Corporations were given the same rights as the American people, a bipartisan supported vote in the Congress has enacted historic legislation that will establish a system by which taxpayer dollars will be the only funding sources for national elections. This law will prevent corporations from making any form of monetary contributions in the political process. Strong, effective campaign finance reform has finally come to America.
Of course, these breaking news headlines are merely a fictional illustration of what could happen in this nation if those who are responsible for governing this country could somehow be persuaded or even forced, by some means, to finally put aside politics and work together. But before we can find the ways to make those headlines a reality we have to stop and consider the depth to which our current political system has now descended and then maybe we can better understand how to make that happen.
Every single individual of any political party that occupies the halls of our government in Washington D.C., from the White House to the Congress, to the Supreme Court must share the responsibility and, yes the guilt, for the massive problems that continue to plague this nation. What's going on in Washington can no longer be considered to be just a matter of politics; it is so much deeper. It involves morals, ethics, honor, integrity and dedication to country. Those who facilitate our endless agenda of war are bloodthirsty, immoral human beings; those who allow themselves to be corrupted by the money and power of corporations are devoid of honesty and integrity; those in the Congress, on both sides of the aisle, who scheme to cut social programs for their fellow Americans and use the funds to benefit the richest of Americans are unconscionable, despicable. Those who allow the manipulators of Wall Street to continue to cheat and scam the American people are low grade political scum.
However ugly it might be, politics is not the biggest problem in this country; it is a symptom of something much deeper. The root cause of our major problems and the reason that this country continues to spiral downward is that it is rapidly losing its moral foundations and that's why we are going in the wrong direction and can't seem to get back on the right track. When a nation loses its sense of morality then what is there left but an empty shell without meaning or purpose.
So we can wait and we can hope that some day we will be witness to those breaking news headlines that herald the transformation of this government and this society. We can think of that possibility as the good news. Now, here's the bad news; that will never happen, we will never see those headlines unless one monumental, very dramatic change takes place in America. There is one major obstacle that stands in the way of that happening.
The American political process has been totally contaminated by a deadly poisonous substance, that being corporate money. Until and unless we find a way to remove every single dollar of corporate money from the political system and this government, nothing is going to change for the better and things are going to continue to grow even worse. But, as bad as it may seem, it is not an insurmountable problem.
