They plunged forward as if convinced that their power would make the feelings and opinions of others irrelevant. And now they have no reservoir of good will to draw upon, when they find themselves a part -and not master-of a bigger Whole. Contrast that with the various mythical tales in which the mighty show mercy to the weak, and then later find themselves in need of the help of the weak, like the tale of the lion who spares a mouse and is later rescued by the mouse gnawing through the net in which the lion has been snared.
Cast thy bread upon the waters... For there is a wholeness that connects the giving and receiving. What goes around comes around. And the Hindu idea of karma.
The spirit animating all this I have regarded as an expression of "evil"-as conceptualized in my essay "The Concept of Evil" (which is to be found at www.opednews.com/articles/opedne_andrew_b_051114_the_concept_of_evil.htm ). Evil I defined there as that which both destroys life-serving order and works through human will that has been rendered twisted and unwhole.
As for what might come next, who knows? Wholeness can be rebuilt, with enough time and enough effort expended in the right spirit. But while things fall apart, the dangers of further breakdowns -though the specific scenarios are not within our ken to foresee--are ever-present.
