Thompson-- he's an actor and legislator and not a very inspiring one. This guy seems chronically tired, with brief episodes of sarcasm and weak wit.
Ron Paul is an obstetrician who's delivered over 2000 babies. His supporters love his political positions and his integrity. Integrity is a good thing. But as a doc and a legislator, he really hasn't had leadership experience. Even his campaign seems to be citizen led. That may be a good thing, a campaign 2.0 kind of philosophy, but What about when tough decisions have to be made. I'd like to see some examples of how he's functioned under pressure, besides, "pass the hemostat."
Romney is a former governor. That's experience as a leader. He organized the Salt Lake City Olympics. They were a success-- more experience as a leader. But... what can I say. He has so many negatives for his campaign. He's smarmy and a bit arrogant, too slick, so slick he's almost greasy. I don't think he'll be able to buy his way into the presidency.
Tancredo and Hunter are house hacks, laughable with their narrow issues.
Mike Gravel was, long ago, a senator. He's been great for bringing up issues in the campaign, but where's his leadership experience?
Alan Keys... maybe on Mars, or the moon, he'd be a leader. Here on earth, he's a total freak.
Ah yes, then we have Huckabee-- the panderer to Christians. He was a governor. That's leadership. His record as a governor is an interesting one too, that shows him to be a smart, nuanced kind of guy. That may just disqualify him from winning the GOP race. But if he wins, he'll be a formidable candidate.
Just going by job experience, Romney, Huckabee, Giuliani, Richardson and Kucinich would seem to be the ones with the most leadership experience. Clearly, the public is weighing other factors as well. What do you see as signs of potential greatness as leaders in the different candidates. I plead guilty to doing a shallow review of all of them. But the goal of this article is to get a conversation started, not finish it. So pile on with your thoughts.
What do you see in the current presidential primary crop that gives you hope that a truly wise, visionary, courageous, principled leader will emerg? And what do you see that gives you pause to worry or fear that the US will be dragged further down the path towards second class or third world status?
