That was what Hillary said when asked on TV if Obama were a Muslim, nurturing doubts about Obama's "other-side-ness" when she could have helped set the record straight.
"So did Jesse Jackson."
That was how Bill Clinton tried to reduce Obama to being simply "the black candidate," whereas --as Bill well understood-- Obama is not running as a black. Bill knew that Obama can only be elected if he succeeds in transcending race in the eyes of white voters, only if he is seen as someone who –unlike Jesse Jackson-exists outside of the discomfort zone that most Americans feel about race. Obama was winning because he is someone with whom both races feel able to connect. And the Clinton campaign sought to break that important connection-- just as the fascistic elemennt has sought power, ever since Nixon's Southern strategy, by fostering and exploiting division.
Hillary has operated according to an ethic in which any approach that works is a virtue to employ, so long as it works. It stands in vivid contrast with an ethic, like Obama's, of wanting to replace the evil structure of today's power system with a different one that expresses the better angels of our nature.
That's where I believe Hillary is at the spiritual level, and that's how I imagine she arrived there.
