In saying
this, I note that, personally, I despise the Wall Street centered policies of Obama
and the national Democrats, not only did I not vote for Obama in 2012, I
actually reregistered as an Independent, as a sign of my disgust with the national
level Democratic Party. I strongly opposed Obamacare, which I consider to be
more about corporate welfare, than public welfare, in favor of a single payer
plan, or best yet, Medicare for all. So Obama, the national Democratic Party,
and Obamacare itself, were all strongly opposed by me. However, one does not
throw away 224 years of legislative process simply because one does not get
what one wants.
The Republican
Party, by making an end run around legislative democracy, has shown that it has
no further constructive role to play. It needs to cease to exist. Already, it
is in the process of becoming a regional, mono-ethnic party: the "Frightened
White Man Party." Good riddance to bad trash, I say! From the ferment of its
destruction there should arise a principled
Conservative Party, with strong Libertarian factions within its "big tent."
As to the
Democrats, despite their being more or less on the side of democratic
legitimacy in this case, they too are a party of oligarchy and the increasingly
undemocratic status quo. Just as the northern Whigs became the nucleus for a
new, firmly anti-slavery party in the 1850's (ironically that party was the Republican
Party!) so to, the progressive Democrats can become the nucleus of a new 21st
century Progressive Party. This party would have very strong Green factions
within it. For this to occur, the Democratic Party must also move into
extinction.
We are
facing existential challenges in the 21st century: climate, energy,
economics, and more. We can either rise to those challenges as a united nation
with a political system, based upon government of, for and by the people, or we
can fall to ruin before them, becoming along the way down an ever more
oppressive and feudal failed state.
The false "gods"
of our political system--elite rule, placing ourselves outside of and above
nature, unsustainable economics and energy production--must now die an eternal
death if there is to be a future. Rather than waiting patiently for someone
else to do something, each of us must act in our own way, within our own lives,
to bring about the hopeful, open-ended future.
Otherwise,
may God be merciful to us, for the whirlwind of oppression, unsustainability,
and collapse shall be speedily upon us.
One
observation is ABSOLUTELY certain, I believe: the near to medium term future
will be unrecognizably different from our present. Fundamental change is upon
us. We must decide between change that leads to empowerment for all and
sustainability, or change that leads to neo-feudalism and then collapse. To do
nothing is to decide in favor of the latter option. ACT!
