Lennon's and Marley's deaths have attracted suspicion but no evidence. Again, the balance was missing. How could Chapman kill such a giant as Lennon without help? Lennon had gone to the US, ironically, to avoid the pressure here and felt safer there. Immigration had tried to shift him, but he had the legal clout to avoid being removed.

"He was killed by some nut" was the commentator's line when I first heard the news. A good safe line. Much better than, "He was killed by someone who lived in a place where unstable people can easily get deadly weapons". The tragedy of Lennon's death is even more profound at this time of war, when other celebrities are so shy at coming forward. "All we are saying". is where the hell is Paul?"

It has been argued that a youngish, fit Marley, catching a rare cancer, was bizarre and accusations of foul play were made. The political factions in Jamaica, that he had personally brought together had been infiltrated by seriously violent people. He had previously been shot during his negotiations. He was also not a great role model to some, because of the tree-sized "spliffs" for which he was famous. Despite all this, I still think his death was just bad luck.

Britain had been the only place ever to challenge the supremacy of the States in world-wide popular music and even then, only for a few years. How amazing that a tiny, poverty-stricken island could have taken over, albeit briefly. This was no "Jamaican Lullaby" this was standing up for Humanity's rights. He also introduced relativism .."..but I did not shoot the deputy" So". he was the good guy in the song.. despite having killed a senior appointed member of the Jamaican police force?

This was ground breaking. Up to then it was "I fought the law but, of course, the law won." Big Bad John and Tom Dooley both died. You don't normally get away with murder in songs. Mind you, have you heard "Lucy in the Sky " by William Shattner?
