A research paper regarding 9/11 and its relationship to Social Psychology

This research explores 9/11 in relationship to Social Psychology and provides information, which will hopefully; spur readers to examine further research or call for an independent investigation of this tragic incident.
The â??9/11 terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001" were carried out by agents of Al Qaeda, led by Osama Bin Laden [with] three hijacked commercial aircraft to destroy the World Trade Center in New York city and severely damaged the Pentagon in Arlington, Va.. A fourth hijacked plane crashed into Shankesville, Pa. When its passengers attempted to seize the plane from the hijackers. Some 3,000 persons died or were missing as a result of the most devastating terrorist episode in U.S. historyâ? (Columbia Encyclopedia, 6th Ed, 2008).
This is the commonly accepted fact which is recorded in history. This essay is to examine 9/11 from a Social/Psychological point of view, and its devastating effects upon the minds of those who survived or witnessed the incident. Many people either witnessed the 9/11 incident, or saw the after effects on television. One could say that I am a â??deflection from the majorityâ? individual, as â??when a minority consistently doubts the majority wisdom, majority members become freer to express their own doubts and may even switch to the minority positionâ? (Myers, D.G., 2009, page 293). A subsequent CNN poll indicates that 90% of Americans believe 9/11 â??was an inside jobâ? (CNN Poll, infowars.com, 2004) and it becomes tiring to read Psychology books used at school, presenting only one side of the history and accepting possible government cover up. The minority here has become the majority.
In the 9/11 commission report, Bin Laden's name is mentioned at least twice (9/11 Commission Report, Pages, Zelikow, P. et.al. pages 193, 360). However, no mention of explosives is mentioned. Follow up research by leading scientists have discovered the presence of active thermite, an explosive device used in demolition, yet the case seems to be an open and shut case, with no further government investigation pending. â??Active Thermitic Material [has been] Discovered in Dust from 9/11 World Trade Center Catastropheâ? (Harrit, N. et. Al, 2009, page 1). â??Thermite grenades and bombs have been used in combat and warfare".thermitic reactions often attain temperatures from 2000C to 3000Câ? (Brunskill, K.M., Ontario, Canada). Exploding jet fuel only raised the temperature in the World Trade Center to â??257 degrees Câ? and â??this temperature is nowhere near high enough to even begin explaining the World Trade Center Tower collapseâ? (The jet fuel; How hot did it heat the World Trade Center?, article from guardian150.com).
Before proceeding further with this discussion, it is necessary to explore some more definitions with relationship to this event, with regards to the subject of Social Psychology.
To start with, in Social Psychology, belief perseverance is defined as â??Persistence of one's initial conceptions, as when the basis for one's belief is discredited, but an explanation of why the belief might be true survivesâ? (Myers, D.G., 2009, page 80). In other words, seeing is believing. People see an event and look only at the surface. Two planes hit twin towers, the government gave their version and the whole scenario becomes an open and shut case.
Considering confirmation bias, which is â??a tendency to search for information that confirms one's preconceptionsâ? (Myers, D.G., 2009, p. S-1, 88-89, 116), is apparent as this article is being written, which includes the desire to research and to know more, but to someone who just accepts the government's position and takes matters as face value, is also part of this scenario. Hence we get different opinions and conclusions to 9/11. With regards to social identity, it is necessary to beg the question: â??who am I?â? in a sense of all people, not just the author (Myers, D.G., 2009, page 39, 317-322), hence, opinions about 9/11 is going to vary. Is one with a group that believes the government, or does not believe the 9/11 Commission Report? This is a complex question that is hard to answer, which is found in â??in-groupsâ? vs. â??out groupsâ? (Myers, D.G., 2009, p. 318). Hence, people become divided in their beliefs. It appears that most people usually just accept authority as legitimate and lawful. â??If the commander-in-chief tells the lieutenant colonel to go stand in the corner and sit on his head, I will do soâ? (Myers, D.G., 2009, North, O., 1987, page 201). If the government report says 9/11 happened the way it is, then Psychologists are going to continue to hammer this belief in universities. People should be taught to think for themselves and uncover facts through their own research. Group polarization strengthens members tendencies so that there is â??not a split within the groupâ?, resulting in â??intensifying opinionsâ? (Myers, D.G., 2009, page S-5, 276-284).
Here is further evidence in America being split over 9/11. The result of the 9/11 incident has been instrumental in prejudice against the Arab world (Myers, D.G., 2009, page 301, chapter 9). Finally, reactance, which is a scenario â??which threatens our freedom of actionâ? (Myers, D.G., 2009, page 218, 559, S-9). This is found in the Patriot Act, which is in direct violation of the Constitution of the United States of America, as it was meant to â??protect Americans from Terrorismâ? (Uhalova, K, 2003-2007). Evidence being presented in this thesis, however, will show that, perhaps, Al Qaeda, as a group, are not the only so called terrorists.
Aggression includes lying (Myers, D.G.., 2009, page 345). Had the 9/11 Commission Report been completely accurate, it would have contained thermite evidence, subsequently when this evidence was uncovered by reputable sources, it would have already been investigated. Within the mind of George W. Bush, Jr., former President of the United States, frustration can be seen. Frustration is defined as â??the blocking of goal directed behaviorâ? (Myers, D.G., 2009, pages S-4, 316-317, 349). George Bush Jr. failed in the oil business (Philips, K., alaric3rh.home.sprynet.com). Iraq has a lot of oil. Hence, the conclusion of this part is that 9/11 was used as an excuse to steal Iraqi oil. â??When morality and greed are put on a collision course, greed wonâ? (Myers, D.G., 2009, page 120). Goering said: "Why of course the people don't want war. Why should some poor slob on a farm want to risk his life in a war when the best he can get out of it is to come back to his farm in one piece? Naturally the common people don't want war neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood.
But, after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any countryâ? (Goering, H., Goering quotes).
In conclusion, why should one believe a President whose grandfather associated with National Socialists? â??The treachery of Allen Dulles and the Rockefellers can only be measured in the enormity"to launder Third Reich assetsâ? (Yeadon, G., & Hawkins, J., 2008, page 55). Bush's character â??displays megalomaniaâ? while the Bush regime displayed â??collective schizophreniaâ? (Tarpley, W.G., 2006, pages 344, 445). Hence, if a government has been in power, with a leader that displays possible mental illness, then a new, independent investigation of 9/11 and its exact perpetrators has to be implemented, not only for the sake of the victims and their families, but the American people as a whole. It is a patriotic duty of the people of the United States of America. The Rockefeller foundation â??funded mass murderâ? (Chaitkin, A., tetrahedron.org) and Bush's grandfather associated with Rockefeller. Why should the elite care about a few thousand Americans or many dead Iraqi people, considering their track record? It is a known fact that Prescott Bush had an association with I.G. Farben Pharmaceuticals, who produced the gas to exterminate Jews.
(Yeadon, G., & Hawkins, J., 2008, page 35, 435). A â??CIA agent alleged to have met Bin
Laden in July [2001]â? (Sampson, A. The Guardian, U.K.). Furthermore, â??It is a well
established fact the United States recruited defeated Germans after World War Two. In addition to
Wernher von Braun, Arthur Rudolph and Hubertus Strughold, the CIA recruited National Socialist
ideologue Emil Augsburg, an officer at the infamous Wannsee Institute, an SS mass
Extermination think tank. SS officer Klaus Barbie, â??The Butcher of Lyonâ? was employed
by the US Army after WW2 to spy on the French and other Nazi leaders, regarded as
â??specialists in anti-resistance activities,â? were used in counterintelligence operations in
Italy.â? (Nimmo, Kurt, infowars.com).
Although this essay has raised more questions than it answers, the association of the Bush family with the Third Reich, the quote by Herman Goering in relationship to 9/11 and bogey man terrorism, with an unconstitutional Patriot Act meant to restrict liberties of the
American people raises many question regarding the motives and perpetrators behind
9/11, especially since Osama Bin Laden has never been captured.
