Turning Out The Lights

By Jim Bush

a poem

::::::::

First
A city
Known for it's Soul
Has it's Soul
Left behind
In a hurricane
And a country
Fails to return
To save it

Then
Police Officers
Make a private video
That laughingly shows
A cop
Running down
A homeless, elderly, black, woman

Now
A Movie Star governor
With a Nazi heritage
Executes
A Black descendent
Of slaves

A black teenager
Kills four people

He is sentenced to death

He sits in jail for over twenty years

In those years he helps to save many lives

But the country that helped to create the teenager who took four lives

Takes no responsibility for it's part in this passion play

And sees no case for redemption

Or room for pardon

For a black man

Whose crimes

Shrink

In comparison to the countless crimes

Committed by a culture that had no compunction

When it came to the enslaving, murdering, and brutalizing a whole race of people

In order to build a system that would line it's pockets with gold

While leaving those people with nothing but their souls

And a terrible nagging pain and sorrow

To pass on down

To a non-comprehending generation

Of lost youth

The young people
Watching
What happened
To New Orleans

The young people
Watching
The cop
Video

And the young people
Watching
The execution
Of Tookie

Have learned
Once again

Not that crime doesn't pay

But that the only time the system cares

Is when you entertain it

Or when it can laugh at you

Or, even better, when it can stick a needle in your arm

And turn out your lights

Rob began his Bottom-up Radio show, broadcast on WNJC 1360 AM to Metro Philly, also available on iTunes, covering the transition of our culture, business and world from predominantly Top-down (hierarchical, centralized, authoritarian, patriarchal, big) to bottom-up (egalitarian, local, interdependent, grassroots, archetypal feminine and small.)
