7 Steps to Making Your Desires Come True
By Christy Whitman
Our desires are meant to feel good to us, to inspire us to become better, more expansive, more joyful versions of ourselves. And when we meet our desires with eagerness and positive expectation - they manifest easily, effortlessly, and we enjoy every stage of their unfolding.
::::::::
Our desires are designed to move through us easily and fluidly, from the inner world of our thoughts and feelings to the external world of form. The energy of a fresh desire is contagious, attractive, and magnetizes to itself the very components that aid in its full manifestation. You know this to be true, for you've experienced many times in your life when something you wanted simply fell into place, or when an opportunity presented itself that felt exactly right. It could be something huge or something incredibly small, but the joy in life is experienced in these moments of effortless manifestation of desire.
Our desires are meant to feel good to us, to inspire us to become better, more expansive, more joyful versions of ourselves. And when we meet our desires with eagerness and positive expectation - they manifest easily, effortlessly, and we enjoy every stage of their unfolding.
Here are the 7 steps for manifesting any desire:
Step 1: Use the contrast of what you don't want to clarify what you do.
Most of our desires are impure. And by this, I don't mean they're hedonistic, immoral, or evil. In fact, I believe that every desire that arises in our hearts is evolutionary, divinely inspired, and worthy of being realized in full. Purity of desire refers to the dominant emotions, or energy, that arises within us when we contemplate it.
Most people don't realize that when they contemplate their important desires, their energy is convoluted or split. Understanding split energy is simple: It means that a certain portion of our energy is devoted to wanting whatever it is we want, but an equal or greater amount of energy is focused in the direction of what we don't want.
For example, imagine you have a desire to lose 15 pounds. If your relationship to this desire was clear and energetically pure, you would focus only on the realization of this goal. Your mind would offer creative ways to alter your food intake and increase your activity level, and you'd happily look forward to reaching your ideal weight.
But most of us have a contradicted, or impure relationship with our desires. Yes, we think about our weight loss goal, and yes, maybe we feel some positive expectation about finally shedding the excess pounds. But mixed in with our desire to create what we do want is an acute awareness of all the things we don't want.
We don't want to agonize over what to wear or struggle to fit into our clothes. We don't want our self-confidence to suffer. We don't want to worry constantly about what to eat or not eat. Perhaps we've been trying to fulfill this desire for a long time, and we don't want to fail again.
It's easy to see how, tangled up in this simple desire to look and feel better, is a great deal of energy about how we don't want to look, and how we don't want to feel. And this split in our energy is the primary culprit that keeps us from manifesting the things that are most important to us.
To purify and potentize the energy of your desire, all you have to do is direct more of your energy toward what you do want than toward what you don't. Contemplate what you're in the process of moving toward, rather than what you're in the process of leaving behind. And give thanks for the contrasting experiences you're currently living, for these are the very experiences that have helped you to clarify what you now want.
Step 2: Go deeper than the what, and connect with the why.
The second step to manifesting any desire is identify what you believe you will feel once you attain it.
Underlying every single desire is the desire to feel better. But often, we don't realize that our feeling state is controlled by an internal switch that we have the power to shift at any moment, and under any circumstance. Instead, we conflate our desire to feel better with the attainment of a certain goal.
For example, if you desire more money, it's probably not because you enjoy the feeling of paper between your fingers. You want it because you are longing to experience a deep, essential feeling that you believe the money will bring. It might be a feeling of worthiness, of empowerment, of self-love, of freedom"
This feeling is the essence of your desire. No matter what you want to create in the outer world, what you are really seeking is the feeling of this internal "essence." Learning to connect with and vibrate in energetic resonance with the essence of what you want to manifest is the key to attracting it into your life.
Step 3: Align yourself in thought, emotion, expectation and action with the essence of your desire.
The old school philosophy of the 1980s and 80s taught us to focus the power of the mind to achieve our goals - hence the popularity of techniques like visualizing, affirming, and "acting as if" what we want was already a done deal. But we now understand that thought and action - while important - are not the most crucial ingredient for successful manifestation. Energy is the crucial ingredient. We literally need to "step into" the energy of that which we want to create.
If your desire is to create larger streams of money and abundance, or to increase your stamina and become healthier, you have to wear the energy of what it feels like to be living in that reality, the same way you would wear a piece of clothing. Think of it as taking off the old energy you've been harboring about this goal as if it were a piece of clothing, and literally stepping into a brand-new suit that is perfectly tailored to the reality you are in the process of creating.
With this intention, you're stepping into a new realm of possibility, a new bandwidth of frequency. And as a result, you now have access to a whole new energy field where the components of what you desire can be realized by you.
Step 4: Utilize the power of your focus to release resistance.
Resistance is the cause of every instance of split energy. And how much resistance you experience in any given moment has only to do with the direction of your focus.
When you're focused on the underlying energy you are seeking to bring into your life, and wearing this energy like a suit, you're flooded with high flying, low-resistance emotions like inspiration, clarity, love, appreciation, and lightheartedness. But when you're focused on the absence of your desire, or on all the obstacles you perceive in your path, your experience is one of powerlessness, despair, regret, or frustration. And thanks to the universal Law of Attraction, which joins together like energies and causes them to expand, the direction of your focus determines the energetic texture of your life.
To consciously apply your power of focus toward the realization of your desire, simply acknowledge that some thoughts feel better than others, and choose those that lift you up rather than those that bring you down. This again comes back to acknowledging that you have a choice about the quality of the thoughts you contemplate, in the same way you have a choice about the quality of the foods you eat.
Some subjects automatically lighten your heart when you think about them, while others are predictably troubling. Some aspects of your life are going better than others. Certain people in your life are easy to be with, and other relationships are fraught with conflict. It's up to you to decide which to give your attention to.
Each of us has the ability to engage the power of focus to deliberately choose the direction of our thoughts. You can engage your power of focus to delve into subjects and activities that interest and inspire you. You can use the power of focus to intentionally distract yourself when a doubtful or fearful thought comes to mind. Just because a thought pops into your head or a news story comes across the airwaves, does not mean you need to hop on that train of thought and allow it to transport your state of mind. This is the power of focus.
Step 5: Be forward looking and feeling.
When it comes to the aspects of our lives that really matter, most of us are historians rather than visionaries.
We remember the unintentional hurtful remarks made by a friend or lover. We remind ourselves of our shortcomings. We relive past failures - dwell on then, even. And in so doing, we continue to recreate the past rather than create the future anew.
"Feeling forward" is an energy mastery technique that I describe in detail in my book The Desire Factor. It's a process of deliberately giving our energy and positive attention to any desire that we wish to manifest.
In the same way a farmer tends his freshly planted crop or a pregnant woman joyfully anticipates the baby she will one day hold in her arms, feeling forward trains your mind to reach beyond the circumstances you're currently living in. This is the secret to deliberate manifestation used by masters and luminaries throughout time. A realist sees what is currently manifested and reacts to it. A visionary sees what can be and creates it.
To unleash your full creative potential, focus forward, beyond what currently is, and toward the new and improved reality that you desire.
Step 6: Tend to your emotional journey, apart from your physical journey.
In the process of manifesting any desire, there are two distinct journeys that we travel upon simultaneously. One is the path of action. The other is the path of emotion.
Goals, milestones and action steps line the familiar territory of the action journey. And because we live in a culture where the tangible is given more credence than the invisible, we tend to evaluate our progress toward any creation in terms of the physical steps we are taking toward it. This is the root of the "no pain, no gain" philosophy that so many believe is necessary to achieving any goal.
However, we now understand that we live in a vibrational universe, where energy - not matter - is dominant. This means that how you feel when you're performing the actions that will lead to your goal are just as important, if not more important, than the action itself. Action that is infused with energy and intention produces results that are astonishing compared to what can be accomplished with action alone.
Tending to your emotional journey means taking a moment to connect to the end result you're hoping to create before you engage in the action. You may spend four hours a week at the gym, but how much of that time are you actually joyfully anticipating and appreciating the results you're working so hard to achieve? You might spend six hours a week cooking, cleaning, or doing laundry, but it won't translate into the happy home you truly desire if your emotions are contradicting that end-goal while you're engaged in those tasks.
To tend to your emotional journey, allow yourself to contemplate the emotional energy of your heartfelt desire. What is the vibrational frequency of the beautiful, fit, flexible body you desire? What is the vibration of security, or of enjoying huge streams of lavish financial abundance? How does it feel to be engaged in intimate, connected, easy relationships with those you love? Conjure this energy and allow it to infuse your every action.
Step 7: Find something to appreciate about the exact place in which you now stand.
When it comes to how we approach the desires we hold dear and wish to manifest, we really have only two choices. We can choose to feel bad about everything that's not yet as we'd like it to be, or we can appreciate this moment in time as a work in progress that will naturally evolve into the reality we desire.
The word appreciate is interesting in that it has two distinct definitions that can help us to understand its broader significance. In an everyday sense, to appreciate is defined as "to be thankful or show gratitude for." But ask an accountant or venture capitalist the meaning of the word, and they'll tell you that appreciation is "an increase in the value of an asset over time." The fastest way to allow into your life more of what you desireboth in the form of the feeling essence that you're really after and in terms of the material possessions that you believe will deliver that feelingis to make it a daily, moment-by-moment practice to appreciate what you already have.
Appreciation is one of the most powerful, attractive, and magnetic forces in the universe. Everything that we nourish with the powerful energy of our appreciation expands, appreciates, and becomes more. Gradually, as we give more focus to what is working and what is wanted, rather than to what isn't working or isn't wanted, the fulcrum tips and our desires come more quickly to fruition.
These are the 7 steps to manifesting any desire, and because they are based on universal principles, they work in relation to any desire, big or small; tangible or intangible.
It all comes down to you making the decision to lean more in the direction of where you're going than to dwell in where you've been. Make the choice to cultivate good-feeling thoughts and emotions, those that foster faith and assurance. Choose to believe that the best is yet to come. Choose to use the incredible power of your imagination to paint the picture of things turning out well and to use the incredible power of your emotions to deliberately conjure the corresponding joyful feeling state of having created all that you want.
A master is one who deliberately chooses the direction of his own thoughts; who decides in advance of taking any action who she wants to be, how she wants to feel, and what she desires to create. Such a person is both a natural leader and a skilled manifestor.
