Helena, MT – Author David Sirota, Maine Representative Nancy Smith, New Hampshire Senator Lou D’Allesandro, and New Hampshire Representative Jim Craig and other elected officials are slated to speak at an upcoming conference in Concord, NH, devoted to highlighting state strategies to fight corruption in government.

“Washington’s reform movement has stalled and Congress is poised to adopt weak, shallow legislation. The states are a different story,” explains Progressive States Executive Director Joel Barkin. “New Hampshire has adopted far-reaching ethics legislation. Connecticut has followed the lead of Arizona and Maine and adopted public financing of campaigns. Across America, legislators and state-based organizations are leading the fight for cleaner government.”

Sirota’s new book Hostile Takeover is an in-depth account of corruption ingrained in America’s political system – complete with specific policies lawmakers can pursue to put control of government back where it belongs – with the people.

Representative Smith took an active part in establishing Maine’s clean elections system, has used it to win election and re-election, and was a vocal advocate for Connecticut’s recent establishment of a similar program.

In addition to Smith and Sirota, panels will feature an impressive array of experienced legislators and successful advocates. Panelists include New Hampshire State Senator Lou D’Allesandro, State Representative Jim Craig, John Rauh of Americans for Campaign Reform, and representatives from the Progressive State Network, the Center for American Progress, Public Campaign, and Connecticut Common Cause.

The "Cleaning Up Our States" Conference will take place in Concord, NH, on May 15 at 11:30 AM. The event is co-sponsored by the Progressive States Network (formerly PLAN), Americans for Campaign Reform, the Center for American Progress, Common Cause, Democracy for New Hampshire, MoveOn.org Civic Action, NH PIRG, New Hampshire Citizens Alliance, and Public Campaign.

The Progressive States Network was established in 2005 to help coordinate and advance the progressive agenda at the state level. It recently changed its name from PLAN.
