What Kind of Constituent Are YOU? Who Is the GOP's Base? The Democrat's Base?
By Rob Kall
What kind of constituent are you? There's only one way to tell-- by the candidates you support.
::::::::
Who is the GOP's base?
Are they the people supporting Mitt Romney, whose latest campaign ad is a brazen, flat out deceptive lie?
Are they the supporters of Hermain Cain, a cross between a proud to be ignorant idiot and a lying, philandering fool?
Or perhaps they are supporting Newt Gingrich, another unprincipled, philandering hypocrite who was thrown out of congress he was so bad-- but he's smart and is showing he can get nasty.
Then there are the supporters of Michelle Bachman, a clueless, when not misinformed or shamefully, embarrassingly ignorant or wrong candidate who, with no apparent self insight, or totally lying, says she has made no gaffes.
Then there are the Sarah Palin fans. What kind of person respects a quitting, money-grubbing ignorant fool like her-- someone so desperate to elect a woman that they'll settle for this political joke who scotched John McCain's presidential run by proving again and again that he'd used bad judgment picking an idiot as his running mate.
I'm not sure there are any actual supporters for Rick Santorum. Let's leave it at that.
There are Ron Paul supporters. Now Ron Paul is an enigma. His opposition to the military and the wars aligns with some liberal approaches, but he does it for very different reasons. His strict Libertarian approaches make him a neanderthal when it comes to health care, social security, medicare, unemployment benefits. And his approach to women's rights is, well, not good by liberal standards, but soft enough, compared to some of the other candidates, that he's lost the support of some anti-abortion, pro-life groups.
John Huntsman seems like a moderate who is being forced to turn hard right to suck up to the GOP base. Too bad.
Add up the candidates and you get a GOP base that is supportive of unethical, blatant liars, philanderers and ignorant fools.
There are two GOP candidates who, though they are way out of range for Democrats, let alone progressives, are being given almost zero odds of winning the GOP primary-- Ron Paul and John Huntsman.
Is it because the GOP base has become so desperate and cynical or because they are as unethical and ignorant as the candidates they are supporting? One consideration to factor in is the media. Fox News doesn't help the GOP electorate. it gives the primary candidates major passes on all their flaws and lies. Even the mainstream media, for the most part, drops the ball. Still, it is up to the individual to do his or her own due diligence on candidates. The buck stops with the voter.
Does this mean that today's GOP voters are a pretty contemptible lot?
Well, let's take this discussion a bit further.
I could stop this article looking at who the GOP base supports, but then, we really should consider Obama. He is an outright liar who made deals to kill the public option while saying he was keeping it open and on the table. He has established policies that are worse than George Bush's regarding torture and prisoners. He's grabbed power as maliciously as Cheney. And there are all these Democrats supporting him.
There's the whole Democratic party, led by Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi, who failed to grab the opportunity when they had filibuster-proof control of the congress. They are either incredibly incompetent or ... or what, totally in bed with their corporate funders?
You have to wonder what kind of people are still supporting them? I have a lot of friends who still support them. They do it with rationalizations that sell their own values short. They conclude that there is no other human who can win an election against the idiots the GOP is choosing from, other than Obama. They weakly argue that there are no other candidates on the horizon who could replace Obama. They say that it is inevitable that Obama will run. I see this as a pretty hopeless, desolate place to be. There is no great enthusiasm for Obama. He's their lesser of two evils candidate.
At this point in the election cycle, it's probably a moot point, me writing this. Still, I'd love to see someone, anyone run against Obama in New Hampshire. It would give people the opportunity to vote against his performance as a president. It would be an opportunity to tell Obama-- get the f*ck out of the 2012 elections. It would show the world that Democrats really do want better. Because, frankly, if they vote for Obama, they're not much better than the GOP supporters of Cain, Romney, Gingrich and Bachman.
It is not too late for someone else, even a few other Democrats to get on the ballot. Even a person who was not serious about running could offer a place holder slot-- a check-off people could choose that would send a message to Obama that he is not the people's choice.
Accepting the current crop of candidates is almost, perhaps is pathological. Are the voters of the US so beaten down, so cynical that they are clinically depressed and willing to accept the political swill they are being fed as anything other than garbage? It looks that way.
I'm putting my hopes in the Occupy Movement because it is not focused on elections and politicians. Those who say that it should start heading that way have no clue about what the Occupy movement is about. It is not focusing on politicians because they just about all stink and just about all sell out their constituents when they get to DC, with a few rare exceptions.
What kind of constituent are you? There's only one way to tell-- by the candidates you support.
One last point. There are growing predictions that there will be a strong third party effort for the 2012 presidential election. Many millions will vote for that candidate because he or she is not one of the other two choices. Aren't YOU already thinking about it?
