In the Midst of Summer Heat Waves, Students Ask Candidates: What’s Your Plan to Stop Global Warming?

With record heat waves sweeping across the west and on the heels of a recent study at suggests that greenhouse-gas warming may raise average summer temperatures in the eastern U.S. nearly 10°F by the 2080s, students will be hot on the trail of Presidential candidates in Contoocook, New Hampshire this Saturday to ask: “What’s Your Plan to stop global warming?” Students expect to talk to Governor Huckabee, Representative Hunter and John Cox.

Since the campaign launch, young people have spoken to almost all of the Presidential candidates including: Mitt Romney, Rudy Giuliani, Barack Obama, John Edwards, Duncan Hunter, John Cox, Bill Richardson, Chris Dodd, John McCain, Tommy Thompson, Dennis Kucinich, Hillary Clinton, Sam Brownback, Mike Huckabee and Joe Biden. See picture gallery.

Youth voting has undergone a significant transformation over the past two election cycles. In 2004, young voter (18-29 year olds) turnout was up 9 percent over 2000 levels – a rate three times higher than the general population. In 2006, young voter turnout increased by 2 million votes while turnout among all ages increased only moderately. More information on young voters.

What’s Your Plan? is a project of The Student PIRGs’ New Voters Project and allied youth organizations. The New Voters Project is the nation’s largest youth voter registration and mobilization campaign. The goal of the project is to highlight the issues that are important to young people and to persuade candidates to target youth and use these issues as they campaign. Since 2003, the project registered more than 600,000 young voters and made more than 650,000 personalized Get Out the Vote contacts leading up to Election Day to turn out young voters.
