But nobody should be surprised at the Republican Party's machinations to deny Black people the right to vote. It has been doing that for decades and every so often its tactics come to the fore. And no matter what the representatives of the party say about fairness and wanting to make sure that everyone who is eligible to vote does so, the fact is that these less than subtle attacks will ultimately disenfranchise Blacks and immigrants.
This is how Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. put it way back in 1957 -- 55 years ago:
"All types of conniving methods are still being used to prevent Negroes from becoming registered voters. The denial of this sacred right is a tragic betrayal of the highest mandates of our democratic traditions and it is democracy turned upside down."
Are we as Americans simply dumb, stupid meatheads?
