Doug Thompson published his first story and photo at age 11 -- a newspaper article about racism and the Klan in Prince Edward County, VA, in 1958. From that point on, he decided to become a newspaperman and did just that -- reporting news and taking photos full-time at his hometown paper, becoming the youngest full-time reporter at The Roanoke Times in Virginia in 1965 and spent most of the past 55+ years covering news around the country and the globe. He spent a short sabbatical as a political operative in Washington in the 1980s but returned to the news profession in 1992. Today, he is a contract reporter/photojournalist for BHMedia and owns Capitol Hill Blue and other news sites.
SHARE Sunday, June 6, 2021 Trump shuts down his latest failure: A blog few read
Without Twitter or Facebook to repeat his lies, disgraced and defeated Donald Trump thought blogging would get his delusions out to his dwindling list of supporters to raise money and bring an outcry from misinformed for a run for the presidency in 2024.

The current system is not working. Congress is mired in partisan gridlock. The current President turned out to just be more of the same. Despite promises and claims, the economy is not really recovering. Cities, towns and counties file for bankruptcy, future leaders are assessed more for their celebrity appeal than any actual experience or ability.

Did the tea party learn its lesson in the debacle that technically ended last night with votes in the Senate and House? Based on public statements by the hard-core TP types who genuflect to falsely-claimed values, the answer is "no way" and the group has shown little ability to learn from its many past mistakes. But when all is said and done, the biggest loser was America itself and those who call this nation home.

I cannot, and will not, ever consider my time as a GOP political operative a career highlight or something for which to be proud. What I learned about the political process in more than a dozen years serves me well as a journalist. It taught me that political corruption is not limited to a single political party and that no party or political organization puts America ahead of its own interests or selfish agendas.

As President, Obama is not a leader and has lost much of his celebrity luster. He promised "the most transparent administration" in recent years but has delivered just the opposite, concealing actions, fighting freedom of information requests and misusing the "national security" excuse to hide many documents and issues.
SHARE Monday, February 6, 2012 Halftime in America
We need to get off our asses and start demanding accountability and change from those who make the decisions that affect our lives. Those decision makers exist not only in the halls of Congress or at the other end of Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington. They serve on city councils, school boards, board of supervisors and in state legislatures.

Partisanship is bi-partisan in Washington. Both parties live under its banner and genuflect to whatever phony ideals either side claims to stand for. While both claim to stand for what they claim is best for America what they really embrace is absolute power and complete control of a government that once functioned far more efficiently under moderation, cooperation and coalitions.

The odds are strong that Liz Cheney won't even make it past the primary. The Republican leadership is already lining up behind incumbent GOP Senator Mike Enzi. Wyoming voters traditionally don't oust incumbents and Cheney, who was born in Wisconsin, lived in Virginia until she and her husband bought a big bucks home in trendy Jackson Hole last year.

While leaders on both sides of the aisle in the House and Senate attempt, and often fail, to be courteous to each other in public, the acrimony they feel towards their counterparts is becoming more and more obvious and concerns staff members. Boehner and McConnell have nothing to do with their Democratic counterparts and Reid and Pelosi are content to avid social contact with Republicans.
SHARE Thursday, April 13, 2006 Partisans: America's REAL enemy
I don't like partisanship, political or ideological, and I don't like the partisans who follow political parties or ideological affiliations. I consider all partisans - Republican or Democrat, liberal or conservative, right or left - to be my enemies and enemies of my country.

In the end, longtime Republican Senator Arlen Specter had no choice.
If he wanted to keep his Senate seat, he had to return to the Democratic Party he left early in his political career. If he wanted to keep his sanity he had to get away from the rabid right wing that controls the Republican Party.
SHARE Thursday, January 11, 2007 Same game, same results, same madness
You can draw many analogies out of what Bush said in his disjointed, rambling speech to the nation but a reasonable person can come to only one conclusion: The President of the United States has run out of excuses, options or rationalizations for a failed, ill-conceived, illegal and immoral action that will go down in history as a massive political and military debacle.

No doubt about it. George W. Bush's lying, rotten, putrid, soulless destruction of a once-great nation called America is now open for all to see.

Two architects of the Bush administration's dismantling of the Constitution and this nation's immersion into an ill-conceived war based on lies find themselves on the hot seat this week - one for memory lapses and the other for letting his Johnson overcome his judgment.

Amazing. Two staunch members of the Legion of Mainstream Media (otherwise known as the LMSM) have declared the debacle in Iraq to be just what it is: a civil war.
SHARE Monday, November 6, 2006 For this election, here's mud in everyone's eye
An old rule of politics used to say: Go positive in the final days of the campaign but, in today's politics, rules are made to be broken.
Here we are on the day before a bitterly-contested midterm election and the mud is still flying through a barrage of attack ads that are booked through the time the polls close on Tuesday.
SHARE Monday, November 27, 2006 Iraq war first-hand: 'A mess. An absolute mess'
The dwindling few who still, for reasons known only to God or their psychiatrist, support Bush's failed invasion if Iraq, continue to claim the situation is not as bad as portrayed by the media. Which, of course, is nothing more than political wishful thinking. Just ask CNN correspondent John Roberts, who went into Baghdad with the invading U.S. forces 3 1/2 years ago and recently returned to the war-ravaged country...

Talk to a Republican political operative lately and, once you get by the false public bravado that all of them try lamely to project, you see nothing but desperation in their eyes.
The world is crashing down on the party of the elephant and they have only themselves to blame for the disaster that awaits them on November 7.
