Priests to Purify Site After Bush Visit
(1 comments)
Mayan priests will purify a sacred archaeological site to eliminate "bad spirits" after President Bush visits next week, an official with close ties to the group said Thursday.
"That a person like (Bush), with the persecution of our migrant brothers in the United States, with the wars he has provoked, is going to walk in our sacred lands, is an offense for the Mayan people and their culture,"

As Gasoline Prices Soar,
(3 comments)
With gasoline prices in the U.S. approaching an average $3 a gallon, Americans are moaning about the rising cost, but so far they are resisting big changes in their gas-guzzling ways.
A 25% jump in prices at the pump since December has set off a firestorm in Washington. Politicians are threatening auto makers with tougher federal fuel-economy standards and oil companies with higher taxes on record profits, while warning against price gouging. Auto and oil executives are predicting that a long-term shift toward greater fuel efficiency is under way. But none of these influences is likely to have much effect on gasoline prices or oil consumption in the near term.

Immigrants begin one-day boycott
(3 comments)
A one-day nationwide strike and business boycott got underway on Monday to demand legal rights for millions of illegal immigrants, with many U.S. businesses shutting down voluntarily to avoid disruption.
Early reports suggested many of the estimated 11.5-12 million illegal immigrants in the country were obeying a call to stay away from work and boycott businesses, despite a mixed message from immigrant-rights organizations, some of which opposed the action.

War monger-In-Chief - "There's going to be more tough days ahead,"
...the president said, with Rice and Rumsfeld at his side. "It's a government that understands they've got serious challenges ahead of them." Talk of splitting Iraq into three provinces -- Sunni, Shia, Kurd -- with a central government in Baghdad.
Though Bush was emphasizing the positive, it was a decidedly less positive message than the one he offered from aboard an aircraft carrier, the USS Lincoln, on May 1, 2003. "The tyrant has fallen and Iraq is free," he said then, standing underneath a banner proclaiming: "Mission Accomplished."

Bush ignores reality, continues to defend Iraq war
(3 comments)
With the war in its fourth year, Iraq hovers as a huge problem for Bush, whose approval ratings have fallen to record lows. Republicans are anxious that Iraq - along with other public concerns like soaring gasoline costs - will lead to the GOP losing control of one or even both houses of Congress in November.

The Senate Republican plan to mail $100 checks to voters to ease the burden of high gasoline prices is eliciting more scorn than gratitude from the very people it was intended to help.

Bush turned down chances to kill Zarqawi: ex-CIA spy
(3 comments)
A former top CIA spy says the United States deliberately turned down several opportunities to kill terrorist Abu Musab al-Zarqawi in the lead-up to the Iraq war.
Mike Scheuer headed the CIA's bin Laden unit for six years before resigning in 2004.
He has told the ABC's Four Corners program the Bush administration had Zarqawi in its sights almost every day for a year.
He says a plan to destroy Zarqawi's training camp in Kurdistan was abandoned for diplomatic reasons.

Prosecutor Says Lay Ignored Several Employees' Warnings
(3 comments)
Enron Corp. founder Kenneth Lay ignored employees' concerns about accounting integrity in the weeks before the company collapsed in 2001, a prosecutor sought to show Monday.
On the third day of cross-examination in his federal fraud and conspiracy trial, Mr. Lay again flashed his temper to prosecutor John Hueston...Mr. Lay was confronted with emails and survey responses from October 2001 in which employees raised questions about accounting "trickery" and Enron's business ethics. One veteran Enron employee said, "I've lost all respect for Enron senior management" and suggested it was criminal for Enron executives to exercise stock options when they knew accounting tricks were being used to manipulate earnings. [Notice a Repug pattern? Bush flashes his temper when confronted head-on with his lies.]

Oh the shame of it all
(3 comments)
It's with a certain perverse admiration that I note that the Republican National Committee is spearheading an advertising campaign of such epic dishonesty that its chairman, Ken Mehlman, has for now secured the title "Chief Sinverguenza of the GOP" despite the current ferocious competition for that honor.

Bernstein: Senate Hearings on Bush, Now
(3 comments)
Should Republicans on the Hill take the high road and save themselves come November? There was understandable reluctance in the Congress to begin a serious investigation of the Nixon presidency. Then there came a time when it was unavoidable. That time in the Bush presidency has arrived.

GPS Tracking With Cell Phones Now Availabe for $9.99/mo. - Watch Out Kids! Mom's Watching
(3 comments)
Last week, Sprint Nextel Corp. introduced a new service called Family Locator that lets parents track their kids' whereabouts, using the GPS capabilities in each child's cellphone. For $9.99 a month, you can get a fix on your little ones' locations as long as they are on your Sprint account and carry one of the 30 Sprint or Nextel phones that allow this monitoring.
As demonstrated by a Sprint publicist yesterday, the service was deceptively easy to use . . . considering that the whole idea would have been science-fiction fodder a decade ago.
