I am a writer/mom/ substitute teacher in a rural community known for Art Bell, Heidi Fleisch, proximity to Area 51, and many in the Witness Protection Plan. It is valley with small mountains on all sides.
The community runs the gamut from Mormans influencing on businesses to outlaws hiding. The most of us are just trying to make it each month.
We didn't have a hospital until 2006 for a population of close to 40k.
Walmart arrived in 2002.
Right now we're in a depressed economy. No one is hiring and anyone in the housing industry is barely breathing if not expired from lack of work.
But amazingly, there are some good things, too. Most people are friendly you meet people who have lived in many places before arriving here.
If you like warm weather, this is a good place. Winters are mild, and we even have 60 degree days in Jan. and Feb.
