A few declarations.
-While I'm registered as a Democrat, I consider myself to be a dynamic critic of the Democratic party, just as, well, not quite as much, but almost as much as I am a critic of republicans.
-My articles express my personal opinion, not the opinion of this website.
(2 comments) Okay. black friday is a commerical, soul sucking cultural latrine. So, what to do with those funds that are being attracted by the financial pheromones, called by the media whirlwind-- invest in a premium membership with OEN and save big-- buy a year and get 15 months.
I'm on the megabus (free WIFI and only $14 from Philly to DC one way) to get some training on some of the software we use and to visit Occupy Washington DC..
(3 comments) Money is destroying democracy, ravaging justice and throttling the middle class in its losing battle in the class war-- a war started by the wealthy.
(31 comments) Margaret Bassett passed away quietly in her sleep Sunday morning, August 21st. She was 89 years old. She'd been an author and volunteer editor for Opednews.com for six years, writing her own articles and posting articles, diaries and thousands of "quick links" to articles by others with descriptions and titles Margaret created or selected.
(7 comments) After much consideration, Managing Editor, Cheryl Biren, will be stepping down from her position with Opednews. For four years, Cheryl has been an invaluable treasure as a member of the OEN management team. She will, however, stay connected to OEN in a less formal way including consulting on special projects in the future.
(13 comments) Normally, we have our ad revenues to help cover costs, but our strongest advertiser's ownership changed hands and we are seeing a huge drop from past months, putting us in a real squeeze.
(24 comments) We're the only progressive news site in existence that regularly publishes the writings of everyman and everywoman, as well as many of the top progressive writers and leading activists.
(1 comments) Today, a bit after 5 PM, I walked out of my apartment to find my neighbor from downstairs lying face down on the concrete, muttering incoherently. I rushed to him, asked if he needed help.
(2 comments) Yesterday, I spent an hour at a local Starbucks, with a local activist teaching him how to edit the queue. Then, I rushed home and spent an hour doing an hour phone interview with gutsy progressive Alan Grayson. I sent out an email to our 40 editors asking for suggestions on what to talk about. I got eight responses and asked almost all the questions and discussed almost all the topics they raised (at least 20 between them.) On Tuesday, I interviewed the former Director of Policy Planning for the State Department of the USA.
(13 comments) OEN has some cool features that not many are aware of. Here's one-- check out the most popular tags overall, or for specific sub categories.
(2 comments) If it seems inevitable that the age of eligibility for Social Security is going to be raised, maybe we can negotiate to lower the age of eligibility for medicare.
(10 comments) Our financial situation is again getting very tight. OEN's budget is a tiny, miniscule fraction of most other progressive media sites. That, at a time when we're investing and committing more in a new, much better server.
(7 comments) If you can afford to chip in, we really need your help. I know this happens ever month. We need a lot more people who subscribe to automatically contribute monthly.
(18 comments) After many discussions among senior editors we've made a decision to discontinue permitting publication of articles with pseudonym bylines except in a few very rare exceptions, mostly of groups who write under one name.
(31 comments) I don't check our numbers every day, not even every week, because generally, our readers generously support our relatively minimal financial needs. But I just checked and while we're about halfway into the month, we have raised less than $250 in contributions-- and that includes one donation for $100. We really, urgently need your help this month.
(1 comments) The last time I did a concert at Philly's Electric Factory, it was November 1970. It ended up the opening act became a part of history and no-one knows the lead act.
(2 comments) wow! what a show. My best interview with Greg, ever, and an interview with David Mathison that's loaded with interesting discussion on the nature and future of the media and how you can be a part of it.
(4 comments) As part of a continuing series of discussions, I had a great conversation with Cindy Sheehan about getting arrested-- the joy, nobility and logistics.
(10 comments) I'll be speaking at length with Jeff Sharlet, author of THE FAMILY, who's become a regular guest on the Rachel Maddow Show. Post your questions for him below.
Tonight, talking with Paul Roberts about trickle down vs Bottom up economics and with Kevin Zeese and Margaret Flowers, M.D., about the huge round of civil disobedience protests across the nation this week, fighting for the civil right of health care.
Today, OEN Photojournalist and managing editor Cheryl Biren Wright appeared in court for a hearing, represented by civil rights defense attorney Paul Hetznecker. She was there along with the AEC (Army Experience Center) six protesters who Biren was photographing while they were being arrested.
(1 comments) On the September 9th Rob Kall Bottom Up radio show, Dennis Kucinich, talking about health care as a human right, and Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood, on the connection between the health care conversation and women's rights and needs.
Think about it. What other site on the whole effing planet publishes as much content by grassroots, we-the-people progressives? What other news-crawled high traffic media site takes on the Democrats AND the Republicans?
(19 comments) I just got back from the netrootsnation conference. It was excellent. Can't imagine missing it next year. It was excellent both for the networking and productive connections I made and the content-- I learned a lot, chatted with some very interesting people and came up with some ideas and actions that could make a difference.
Derrick Jensen, Award winning, kick-ass, take no prisoners activist author of Language older than words, Endgame and What We Leave Behind And Walter Tsou,M.D., single payer healthcare activist.
(2 comments) Wendell Potter testified Before Congress last week. I interviewed him, having read his written testimony to congress and we went deeper, further.
(9 comments) This show was one of my best, primarily because both guests engaged in a lively, well informed conversation with very different points of view. And... we had a nice range of questions emailed in, which I read, from OEN readers.
(173 comments) Over the past week, a lot of outright lies have been told about OpEdNews and me personally. Here's an accounting of what really happened.
(4 comments) Listen to FBI Whistle Blower Coleen Rowley and CIA analyst Ray McGovern discussing Obama's signing statement that appears to oppose increasing protection for Whistleblowers.
(2 comments) Barry Schwartz recently spoke at the TED conference on the loss of Wisdom, on the failure of incentives and what we need to replace them. I interviewed him about Wisdom and the GOP approach to government and taxes, about Bobby Jindall, on Wisdom and Happiness and more.
(33 comments) Just did a session with a dog trainer. She explained that there's a pyramid and you start dog training with a foundation base of commands to come, sit and lie down.
(25 comments) We're working at making OEN a more civil place. That means editors are going after the name calling and nastiness in the comments-- warning offenders, hiding some comments and banning the worst of the combatants.
(10 comments) Today, as usual, I'm in a pretty positive mood, as compared to our resident "dark team," the crew who always finds something negative about whatever I post. I challenge them to poop on this posting, without going potty-mouthed.
(64 comments) For most of the people in the world, today is a joyful day of rejoicing. If you are not, dump your complaints on this diary and no-where else today.
(23 comments) You may have noticed we have a new look and new pages on OpEdNews.com. This is a big deal. We've spent months planning, building and testing the new front page, new "Hot pages" and a new control panel to make them all work.
(7 comments) Steve served as President-Elect Barack Obama's National Deputy Campaign Manager where he oversaw the state, field and political operations and the last two days, has raised quite a row among progressives-- a story reported on all the major news networks.
(240 comments) We're working on developing a site policy for dealing with content submitted which contains "hate speech, " which opposes rights, supports injustice or unfair treatment for all minorities, nationalities, religions, sexual orientations, etc.
