Russian Nuclear Fuel Delivery to Iran Proves Bush/Cheney War Drums Are Illegit
We've been saying this for a while. If Iran, or any other country with enough money wants to go nuclear, they can. All they need to do is buy the nuclear material and technology. They don't even have to go to a rogue state like Korea, thought they could. Look at this news. They buy it from a super power-- from Russia, though it could probably, just as easily have been from France or any other number of nuclear countries... except Israel and the US.
As it turns out, Iran is getting nuclear fuel from Russia, as the LA Times reports,
After years of delay, Russia announced Monday that it had delivered its first shipment of nuclear fuel to a reactor in southern Iran, a move Washington had long tried to delay to pressure Tehran not to pursue its own enrichment program.
Delivery of the nuclear fuel rods will ensure that the $1-billion power plant being built by Russia's state-owned Atomstroyexport in the port city of Bushehr will be up and running by next year, Gholamreza Aghazadeh, chief of Iran's Atomic Energy Organization, told state television.
He cast Russia's decision as evidence that Iran had convinced other countries that it was pursuing nuclear power only for peaceful purposes.
The Iranians could get parts for nuclear bombs from N. Korea, from Pakistan, from intermediary third party countries that do business with these or other nuclear powers, possibly even getting their hands on US technology. Hell, we know at least one case where the US airforce left a batch of nukes just lying around. Or they can get the yard sale/thrift shop versions-- the ones in circulation from the former Russian Republics.
Bottom line-- building a nuclear technology is absolutely a pathetic reason for pounding on the drums of war like Cheney and Bush have been doing.
Who knows. While I've basically seen Condi Rice as a worthless, unproductive performer, maybe history will give her credit for keeping the Cheney toilet from overflowing.

A few declarations.
-While I'm registered as a Democrat, I consider myself to be a dynamic critic of the Democratic party, just as, well, not quite as much, but almost as much as I am a critic of republicans.
-My articles express my personal opinion, not the opinion of this website.
Our policy regarding nuclear proliferation is about as shallow, politically motivated and useless as can be. The best way that the US can stump for less nuclear weaponry in this world is to reduce our own stockpile of them.
While we say nothing about a nation like Pakistan waving their own nuclear weaponry at India we insist that nations seeking peaceful use of nuclear power are evil, warmongering and sinister in intent. Whatever happened to leading by example?

Countries with confirmed nuclear warhead capability:
Britain, China, France, India, Pakistan, Russia AND Israel (though, Israel technically not confirmed).
Not only does this constitute a double standard but doesn't take into account 1) The NIE report that Iran is at least 3-8 years away minimum from 'having' the capability and 2). The comments from Washington that Iran should be considered a threat for even having the knowledge to secure the capability.
It is so far out of whack.
Just another absurd, BS piece of Washington propaganda spun and double spoke so much we actually think it's worthy of a discussion.
It is however good, necessary and essential that we keep pointing out these utter absurdities and not go quietly into that night.
And yes Ardee. An example set by us would be a wonderful start. Like when I explain to my kids that if they have an issue with someone, TALKING TO THEM is a good place at which to begin to come to an understanding. I dare say setting an example such as you offered is but one great way to correct this train wreck we're on. Having leaders that lead would be another.
Thanx Rob.

But hey, we know that they are just grasping for an EXCUSE to bomb Iran, not a REASON.
The neo-con Rethuglican nut-jobs want to set back Iran and their oil production and don't really care much about the consequences to the U.S. and the world, as long as they can avoid any accountability.
I'm not even sure that they care if they destroy the Rethuglican Party by their actions, though I'm sure they are being advised to hold off until after November 2, 2008 so that they don't cause any more damage than necessary.

Yesterday our esteemed Senate granted unlimited funding for the ongoing Iraq War.....I have heard that , in some nations, the government is responsive to the will of the people. Must be nice.

Sad to say that not too much has changed, except maybe to get much worse than when the Temptations had this song....
1, 2... 1, 2, 3, 4, Ow! Eddie: People moving out, people moving in. Why, because of the color of their skin. Run, run, run but you sure can't hide. An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth. Vote for me and I'll set you free. Rap on, brother, rap on. Dennis: Well, the only person talking about love thy brother is the...(preacher.) And it seems nobody's interested in learning but the...(teacher.) Segregation, determination, demonstration, integration, Aggravation, humiliation, obligation to our nation. Ball of confusion. Oh yeah, that's what the world is today. Woo, hey, hey. Paul: The sale of pills are at an all time high. Young folks walking round with their heads in the sky. The cities ablaze in the summer time. And oh, the beat goes on. Dennis: Evolution, revolution, gun control, sound of soul. Shooting rockets to the moon, kids growing up too soon. Politicians say more taxes will solve everything. Melvin: And the band played on. So, round and around and around we go. Where the world's headed, nobody knows. [Instrumental] Oh, great GoogaMooga, can't you hear me talking to you. Just a ball of confusion. Oh yeah, that's what the world is today. Woo, hey, hey. Eddie: Fear in the air, tension everywhere. Unemployment rising fast, the Beatles new record's a gas. Dennis: And the only safe place to live is on an Indian reservation. Melvin: And the band played on. Eve of destruction, tax deduction, city inspectors, bill collectors, Mod clothes in demand, population out of hand, suicide, too many bills, Hippies moving to the hills. People all over the world are shouting, 'End the war.' Melvin: And the band played on. [Instrumental] Great GoogaMooga, can't you hear me talking to you. Sayin'... ball of confusion. That's what the world is today, hey, hey. Let me hear ya, let me hear ya, let me hear ya. Sayin'... ball of confusion. That's what the world is today, hey, hey. Let me hear ya, let me hear ya, let me hear ya, let me hear ya, let me hear ya. Sayin'... ball of confusion.
And the band plays on......
