Senate Confirms a Bigot as U.S. Circuit Judge

Tell A Friend

Yesterday, the U.S. Senate confirmed Leslie Southwick, a known bigot, to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit.

Here is what the organization People for the American Way had to say about Southwick:
Two cases in particular serve to highlight Southwick's lack of commitment to the social justice progress of the last fifty years.

In 1998, Southwick joined a ruling in an employment case that upheld the reinstatement, without any punishment whatsoever, of a white state employee who was fired for calling an African American co-worker a "good ole nigger." The court's decision effectively ratified a hearing officer's opinion that the slur was only "somewhat derogatory" and "was in effect calling the individual a 'teacher's pet.'" The Mississippi Supreme Court unanimously reversed the decision.

In 2001, Southwick joined a ruling that upheld a chancellor's decision to take an eight-year-old girl away from her mother and award custody to the father, who had never married the mother, largely because the mother was living with another woman in a "lesbian home." Southwick went even further by joining a gratuitously anti-gay concurrence which extolled Mississippi's right under "the principles of Federalism" to treat "homosexual persons" as second-class citizens. The concurrence suggested that sexual orientation is a choice and stated that an adult is not "relieved of the consequences of his or her choice" - e.g. losing custody of one's child.
And now this judge has gotten a big promotion.

I think not

C'mon. What are the chances that 12 Democrats and an Independent joined all the Senate Republicans in confirming "a known bigot"? They obviously didn't agree with "the facts" as presented by People for the American Way.

Here's another side of the story - one the Senators apparently found more convincing:

I actually agree with many of the things you are saying.

I've had conversations with many homosexuals on this forum.

Almost all believe they were born with their homosexuality, and I believe them.

Many male homosexuals exhibit feminine characteristics that they can't possibly be faking.

On the other hand some are homosexuals by choice. I know a woman who was married to a man, but who was so abused by that man she was afraid

to have any relationships with other men. She now has a female partner.

Does that make it right? Like you, I agree that it goes against the natural

order of things. I believe she is just messing up her life more instead of dealing with her fear.

I believe that traumatic sexual experiences like being molested at an early age can lead to homosexuality. Most homosexuals will deny this, but I

believe it to be true.

I have also found many homosexuals to be more sexually explicit/perverted then heterosexuals. Some of the gay parades I've seen

confirm this.

In short, homosexuality is a complicated issue. It's not like diagnosing

a broken arm. Homosexuality deals with the mind, hormones, genes and/or

personal choice.

I don't have any gay friends, but some gay people are very friendly and

personal people. Some are just plain bitches. I just live and let live, but like

you I don't believe homosexuality was the way it was meant to be.

Homephobia is a treatable affliction

On the surface this is an indeed reason for concern but like the first commenter said more detail is required.  It could be that the mother mentioned also had a drug problem et sec in which case the reason for the custody change had nothing to do with her homosexuality.

Likewise cases of racial taunts are in a context in which case there might be more to it.

The most disturbing issue is the two year back log  of written decisions (to me he simply isn’t doing his job) as to his bigoted nature more information please.

Scientific evidence shows that bigotry is nearly alway based on unfounded irrational fears. This evidence further shows that sexual based bigotry or homophobic attitudes are as a result of deep seated conflict in the individual’s own sexuality. For example most porn sites exist on among other acts lesbianism. Male homosexualiy  tends to threaten the bigot's (sufferer's) perceptions of their own masculinity. Unless treated this can have profound issues in their own sexual lives.

A proven myth is the link between the parent's homosexuality and gender orientation of the child.

The final disproven myth is the alleged link betwean Peadophilia and Homosexuality it simply doesn't exist save in the troubled mind of the bigot.

On that basis they ( the sufferers) need understanding rather than condemnation but this doesn’t mean their abhorrent view should be accepted or tolerated least of all as a member of law enforcement or judiciary.

Reply: Homophobia

I never liked the term "homophobia".

It translates as " fear of  homosexuals", which I have no fear of.

It's just another buzz word to counteract anyone who thinks homosexuality

may not be as harmless as people make it out to be.
