Open Letter to Congressman Ron Paul

by Joel S. Hirschhorn     Page 1 of 1 page(s)

Tell A Friend

There are numerous reasons to admire you, as I have for many years.  Clearly you are running for president as a Republican, rather than a third party candidate, for the sole purpose of getting media and public attention not available to those outside the two-party duopoly.  In last night’s debate among Republican presidential candidates you proudly described yourself as a “champion of the Constitution.”  However, you are missing a major opportunity to demonstrate your courage and allegiance to our constitutional republic.

You have acknowledged the appropriateness of amending the Constitution.  In fact, you introduced legislation for an amendment that would stop giving automatic citizenship to babies born in the U.S. to non-citizen parents.  You said: “Our founders knew that unforeseen problems with our system of government would arise, and that’s precisely why they gave us a method for amending the Constitution.  It’s time to rethink birthright citizenship by amending the 14th amendment.”

Personally, I endorse this particular amendment.  More important, however, I am disappointed that you have never latched on to the long history of Congress’ failure to honor and obey the part of Article V of the Constitution that gives Americans the right to a convention for the purpose of proposing amendments to the Constitution – an alternative to Congress proposing amendments.   Interestingly, the particular amendment that you favor will probably never emerge from Congress, but might have a better chance through an Article V convention.

Why have you failed to acknowledge that Congress has ignored over 500 applications from state legislatures from all 50 states for an Article V convention?  As a champion of the Constitution, surely you know that the one and only requirement explicitly stated in Article V is that two-thirds of state legislatures ask for one.  And surely you know that Congress has never passed any law that expands or modifies this single explicit constitutional requirement.  So, I ask you Congressman Paul: Why have you remained silent on the Article V issue?

If you do not believe that Congress should honor Article V’s provision for a convention, why not say so publicly?  If you believe that it should never be used, then why not call for an amendment to delete it from our Constitution?

Please Congressman Paul, as a champion of the Constitution, do not behave like other members of Congress and silently veto a crucial part of the Constitution that the Framers wisely gave us.  They anticipated that eventually Americans could lose confidence in the federal government.  You clearly have earned the respect and support of millions of Americans because you object to so many policies and actions of the federal government.  Thus, you, more than virtually any other member of Congress, should appreciate the wisdom of the Framers in giving us the Article V convention option.

I beg you to speak up and demonstrate just how much of a champion of the Constitution you really are by bringing national attention to the Article V convention issue and supporting its use.  As a founder of Friends of the Article V Convention I invite you to play a leading role in giving the United States of America its first Article V convention.

I do not regret voting for Nader in 1996, 2000 or working for Nader's ballot access in 2004.  I voted for and supported the best man, not a lessor evil.

That's unfair of you

CNN asked two questions on healthcare and didn't give one question to Dr Ron Paul.  Dr. Ron Paul defended Ralph Nader's RIGHT to run for president, so yes, as a Libertarian, who supported Nader's RIGHT to run, Dr. Ron Paul knew he would not be on that stage if he was not GOP.  How many times did Democrats tell Nader to join the Democrat Party, or the Green Party?  So Dr. Ron Paul is in, and way over on the edge of the stage, not in a camera shot, and obviously being shunned.  First thing this morning, here you are, an opportunist seeing to "kick a dog when it's down", you attack, BEGGING him to carry your pet constitutional peeve.  As if there is only one.  Was there someone else on that stage last night or the Democrat Party debates who is standing for the constitution better than Dr Ron Paul?  Who?  And if not, I would appreciate you getting off your high horse and helping him.  Your article appears to me to only try to attract attention to yourself and your pet peeve which makes you part of the problem.  Not a solution.

Joel is just asking Congressman Paul to help bring about an article V convention.  I'm not sure it is warranted complaining about it being a pet peeve. Everyone has a pet peeve, and we are all allowed to express them (First Amendment).

I'd love to see an article V convention, but that would sort of require that our government was being run by statesmen...

Because it is being run by corporatists and megalomaniacs, I think the convention would quickly turn into a childish shouting match. But what the heck, it’s worth a shot…

what makes you think

it would become a shouting match? it's simply the proposal of ideas and each delegate will have their say. after that, based on the proposals, naturally consensus will be built based on what has been suggested.

if you were a delegate do you think you'd be reduced to a shouting child? no. you'd suggest what you think would make quick work of the mess, and listen to the other delegates and their ideas.

possible 28th Amendment: From here on all state a federal elections will be standadized and made uniform with proprietary source strictly prohibited, and the Congres shall make this so.

Ron Paul

Ron Paul doesn't stand a snowball's chance in hell of ever becoming a GOP presidential candidate, even though he is far more qualified than the rest of these phonies. The mainstream media, which really picks the candidates, will continue to marginalize him just like they've done with that other troublemaking maverick on the other side - Dennis Kucinich.

These guys' only chance rest with their courage to start telling the entire truth, which means getting to the heart of what's really wrong with the current corrupt system, embracing 9-11 Truth, talking about the Bush administration's crimes and hoping the resultant firestorm will resonate with enough of the population. Otherwise they are spinning their wheels if they believe that they can play the game as its always been played and still win. Those in control will not permit it.

Demanding respect for the Constitution

is a lot more than a pet peeve!!!  This is deadly serious business.  Every conscious American ought to be very angry that Congress has not obeyed the Constitution.  I said nothing negative about Paul in my article, because I genuinely admire and respect him.  Of course, he is not going to become the Republican nominee for the presidency; that is a given.  Of course, he does not get treated fairly by the mainstream media.  I am 90 percent certain that he will become a third party candidate after the Republican convention.  More important, our effort to get the nation's first Article V convention would benefit enormously from Paul's support, which would be totally consistent with his values, beliefs and philosophy.

Before you get too far into a Constitutional Convention,

I would suggest you pay more attention to Article V 's reference to the the year 1808.  Slavers ruled.

Corporatists would likely dominate any future convention, inserting language to legitimize things like NAFTA, the WTO and corporate personhood.

Best of luck.

Did I hear Ron Paul mention Empire?

you do know

what the word Ratification means, right? the corporatists can write whatever they want, but they'll have to get 38 states (!) to agree to it.

with the country as polarized today, the only thing likely to be ratified would be an amendment on electoral reform. anything slightly questionable would be toast. but the civic ceremony of a convention would be more significant itself since corruption has become institutionalized as it has.

The Republican Party has imploded.

I don't know how many of you are actually Republicans but the GOP has imploded and desperately needs new direction.  A Ron Paul Registration Drive could provide that, change the leadership, and give Ron Paul the nomination.  If you want that to happen register Ron Paul Republican.

Where does Ron Paul Stand?

1.  On the graduated income tax, FDR style. A flat tax would destroy what little hope the lower middle class has. Where does Ron Paul stand?

2.  A single pay national health insurance policy covering every citizen of the United States?

3. Social Security-- does he still want to destroy it?

4. Medicare? 5. Medicaid?

6. Public School VS Private schools. Does he still support vouchers?

7. College Education loans and grants?

8. Universal Draft as Israel has?

9. States Rights VS Federal Rights. Has he changed from wanting to limit Federal Rights to the place they are subordinate to States Rights such as in the Public School System? Does he still wish to destroy the Federal Department of Education sending education back to the local level?

10. Where does he stand on the abortion issue-- Right to Choose or Right to Life?

Iraq is just one of many issues and is probably eleventh on my list of importance. Honesty over deception as practiced by the Bush Administration is very important.

11. Destruction of the Unions and destruction of the Anti-Trust Laws and Anti-Monopoly Laws are very important to me. Where does Paul stand on these?

 12. With a very weak Federal Government, how does he expect to control corporatism?

Where Does Ron Paul Stand II?

I forgot one question. Where does Ron Paul stand on the last two elected members of the Surpreme Court (Alito and Roberts)?

This is very important with the only two remaining so-called Liberal judges retiring in the next four year Presidential term (Stevens, 84 yrs old; Ginsburg, 73 years old).
