In Good Riddance Attention Whore, Cindy Sheehan’s resignation as the “face” of the anti-war movement, she makes clear the frustrations of speaking truth to power in a country that is more concerned with who will be the next American Idol than with the deaths of thousands of its own children and hundreds of thousands of innocent Iraqis.

We who advocate peace understand and share Cindy’s frustration and dismay with the arrogance, ineptitude, and criminality of the current Administration, the moral and political cowardice of members of Congress, and the lack of outrage, apathy, and indifference of the American people.

In solidarity with Cindy and the millions of others who make great personal sacrifices for peace and justice, endure the outrageous comments and intimidation of the ignorant, and easily lead, I offer the following dirge on the frustrations of activism.

They wage preemptive war based on lies and deception against a sovereign nation. We who advocate peace say such wars are illegal and immoral. And they say we are unpatriotic, treasonous, and unsupportive of the troops.

They chose not to serve or had “other priorities” when their Country called, and now cavalierly send our children to kill and to die in their war for oil and empire. We who advocate peace say that if the cause is so important and the threat so grave, our chicken hawk leaders and their privileged children should be the first to go. And they say we are unpatriotic, treasonous, and unsupportive of the troops

They send our military into harm’s way unnecessarily, in adequate numbers, with inferior body and vehicle armor, and expose them to harmful levels of depleted uranium. We who advocate peace say our troops are not cannon fodder and that such leadership is incompetent and indifferent to the needs of our military. And they say we are unpatriotic, treasonous, and unsupportive of the troops.

They deny a pay raise for our troops, cut the budget of the Veterans Administration, offer substandard physical and psychological treatment for our returning wounded veterans. We who advocate peace say providing for the needs of our veterans is a moral and legal obligation and should be our first priority. And they say we are unpatriotic, treasonous, and unsupportive of the troops.

They refuse to meet and to comfort the families of our fallen heroes, denigrate the memory, sacrifice, and dignity of our soldiers killed in battle by fabricating fantasies of their death and suffering to bolster patriotic support for their unpopular war. We who advocate peace say that exploiting the deaths of our soldiers and the grief and suffering of their families is unconscionable and depraved. And they say we are unpatriotic, treasonous, and unsupportive of the troops.

They torture detainees in Abu Graib, Guantanamo and “black sites” – secret prisons around the world -- and deny “prisoners” even the most basic right of Habeas Corpus. We who advocate peace say that such acts increase the risk that our troops will be ill-treated and tortured should they be captured, and violate the United States Constitution and International law. And they say we are unpatriotic, treasonous, and unsupportive of the troops.

They exploit the fear of the American people post 9/11, violate their rights to privacy, misrepresent and now ignore the health effects suffered by First Responders and workers following the attacks on the World Trade Center.  We who advocate peace say such exploitation of a vulnerable citizenry, blatant disregard for their basic human rights, and indifference to the well-being of our First Responders and workers is “Un-American” and a violation of basic human decency. And they say we are unpatriotic, treasonous, and unsupportive of the troops.

They award no bid contracts to favored corporations for personal benefit and to garner support for their corrupt agenda fleecing America of billions of dollars and, in many cases, placing the lives of our citizens (military and civilian) in danger. We who advocate peace say such war profiteering is an outrage and must be investigated and prosecuted. And they say we are unpatriotic, treasonous, and unsupportive of the troops.

They sat idle as the city of New Orleans and thousands of its inhabitants died while giving further unaccounted for billions of dollars to corporate criminals to salvage what remains for wealthy developers. We who advocate peace say such indifference to human pain and suffering is criminal and unconscionable. And they say we are unpatriotic, treasonous, and unsupportive of the troops

They give tax cuts to the wealthy, tax incentives to the profit hungry oil industry that repeatedly enjoy record profits, ignore global warming and the environment, and cut aid to students and to health care. We who advocate peace say that fattening the corporate coffers and benefiting the affluent at the expense of the poor is anathema and a defilement of American values. And they say we are unpatriotic, treasonous, and unsupportive of the troops.

They waste billions of tax dollars on their illegal and immoral war, mortgaging our country to foreign interests and investors. We who advocate peace say such “selling of America” is fiscal suicide and threatens the future survival of our beloved nation. And they say we are unpatriotic, treasonous, and unsupportive of the troops.

They disclosed the identity of Valerie Plame, a CIA operative, to “punish” her husband for reporting the Niger uranium-production allegations to be untrue, jeopardizing Plames’ life, the lives of many other operatives she may have worked with in the past, and the CIA’s Counterterrorism operation.. We who advocate peace say that knowingly disclosing the name of an undercover agent is treason and illegal under the Intelligence Identities Protection Act. And they say we are unpatriotic, treasonous, and unsupportive of the troops.

On Memorial Day, they stage Air shows, weapons displays and celebrate the technology of war all intended to entice other young men and women to die in war. We who advocate peace say that Memorial Day is not for celebration, or show, or deceptive recruitment, but for grieving and remembering the brave Americans already sacrificed, some unnecessarily, on the field of battle. And they say we are unpatriotic, treasonous, and unsupportive of the troops.

We thank Cindy for her courage, dedication, personal sacrifice, and commitment to world peace and social justice during a time of profound grief and suffering. We wish her health, personal peace, and happiness during her sabbatical of restoration.  God speed, Cindy Sheehan.

The Frustrations of Activism

Probably the best article I've read about this arrogant, blustering, lying group of assholes we comically call, "the Administration" Excellent!

Cindy/Unpatriotism

Well said, Mac! I only wish I could express things so admirably.
Cindy has done so much, so fully intensely, she must sorely need a sabbatical in order to catch up on her life/family and restore herself.
NelsWight, WW II/Korean oldster who hopes still that some massive turnaround can bring this nation of sadsacks back to some semblance of sanity

I do not regret voting for Nader in 1996, 2000 or working for Nader's ballot access in 2004.  I voted for and supported the best man, not a lessor evil.

If Cindy was the face, who's the soul?

I see allot of bumper stickers reflecting "the face" of the anti-war, cum peace movement.  From the beginning many progressives claimed the war was being fought for oil.  These same people slap bumper stickers on their car and think they've made a statement.  When that statement drives past other cars, breaking the speed limit, going 20, 30 and more, what are they really telling us?  "Do as I say, not as I do".  Do these folks who claim the war is for oil not think that consuming more gas is the solution?  A massive peace movement would be for those who believe the war is for oil to drive the speed limit.  I'd love to see some bumper stickers that said, "Got Fuel? you won't!"  Or something to the effect because those against the war could do allot more than grieve the loss of a face, and start putting their own on the line.  Make a statement, drive the speed limit.  Use less gas.  Conserve.

The Frustrations of Activism Indeed!

Confronted by the most dire domestic threat the nation has faced since the war between the states, the U.S. could use, a lot fewer "activists" of the type, commonly going by that name today! Unfortunately, most contemporary "activists" are invariably naive, politically inept, and unable to grasp the true nature of the enemy they call themselves combating! In short, they tend to be their enemy's best friend, and their own worst enemy! It's therefore not surprising that the righteous anger that launched Mrs Sheehan's activism, eventually ended it as well. It is afterall, quite fitting, and not a bad thing at all. Her departure from "activism" is a good indication, that she has in fact outgrown such a clueless crowd, and signals that there may be one less brainwashed, and politically inept American in our midst! The fact that Cindy no longer sees the corrupt Democrats as part of the problem, is proof that she has at least been cured, of one of the more destructive delusions, that keep today's activists in check, and going in circles!

The sad reality of mainstream "activism" today, is that woeful political correctness, incompetence, and crippling zombi-like behavior, makes the typical contemporary activist, as guilty as the GOP and Democrats, in maintaining the horrendous political status quo, in this country! While the mainstream "activist" crowd, continues it's clueless, and ineffective pursuits, perhaps Cindy Sheehan can now graduate to bigger and better things. It may well be that her adventures in the controlled world of "mainstream activism" has evolved in her, a more realistic and effective political consciousness? This is of course, a prerequisite for any person, who's serious about solutions to any of the nation's problems! Problems like, needless and illegal wars, lying and treason, by the media, the Republicans, and the Democrats, as well as the lemming-like behavior of millions of brainwashed, and politically inept Americans, who make this all possible!

All it takes is ONE

I recently attended a 'cultural sensitivity' class which was a required prerequisite to a month long study abroad program with my local Community College. One of the things the professor pointed out was the problem of lumping people of one race or one demographic into a BIG all-inclusive group., i.e., I was cut-off today in traffic by a person in France, who appeared to be French, so that means ALL French people are bad drivers and also bad people. The next step is pure RACISM.
Since a small group of people from the middle east are terrorists, that makes them ALL bad, WRONG!!
All it takes is one person who is against the war to drive over the speed limit and we ALL get trashed by the idiot right wing fruit cakes. Give me a break. When I am not driving 5 miles per hour over the speed limit in my PRIUS, I am at the Womack Army hospital in North Carolina visiting my son in law, who was blown up by an IED in April! There are Important reasons why we are against the war. The liberal Left is not perfect, but one thing we ARE is empathetic.
Most of us have BEEN there/Done that...including serving our country in the military...I keep bringing up the war in conversations, I have yet to talk to a right winger who is PRO WAR who has a family member serving over there!

Frustrations Indeed

Please see the reply that I was driven to write after I read Cindy Sheehan’s recent article, May 28th, 2007, OpEdNews.Com, titled, Good Riddance Attention Whore, included, below:

 "CINDY

I see that you have had your butt kicked from all directions. And – NO – Casey did not NOT die in vain!

This is one of the most crucial times in our American history. It may very well be our collapse as THE Great nation of the world.

But it did NOT start with this disgusting G. W. Bush or his IRAQI War. It began way back when Old Man Kennedy made a deal with the devil to get his son elected president. The mob fixed several elections in the 1960’s and made the presidential election go to John F. Kennedy.

But – when it came time to "Pay the Piper" the Old man Kennedy failed to have his son pay the respect and loyal return of kindness and favors to the mob. In fact – both Kennedy sons were kicking the crap out of the mob.

WELL WE ALL KNOW WHAT HAPPENED!! BOTH WERE KILLED. If you make a deal with the DEVIL – what would you expect??

Lee Harvey Oswald my ass!?!?!?

CAN YOU RIG A PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION??? PUHL….LEEEEEZE!!!! DO NOT INSULT MY OR OUR American INTELLIGENCE!

WAS LYNDON BAINES JOHNSON INVOLVED IN THE KENNEDY ASSINATIONS? I don’t know – but I would not be a bit surprised .

And Johnson went on to kill many, many, many more of our kids in Vietnam. Why did we fight that war and why did Johnson escalate the Vietnam War – even more?

Was it because they knew they could win it? HELL NO! They (the politicians) never let our kids and their officers fight the Vietnam War – in order to win it! They never allowed them (our kids) to bomb Hanoi. At least – that enemy (real or fabricated) had an honest to God country from which they came to fight our kids.

I believe the Vietnam War was a fabrication of the Military/Corporate/Political Complex operating with corrupt business executives, Military leaders, and politicians – who wanted a boost in the economy. And the Military wanted to "Play War" and enjoy the thing they were trained many years to do. These Arrogant Pentagon mongering bastards want to be able to make the most of their careers. They want to try to be remembered for some of those famous Patton and General Douglas MacArthur quotes. Like "God Help me, but I do so love the smell of Napalm in the morning".

KISS MY ASS – What a legacy for our children?!?!? What insipid and unadulterated Bull Shit!?!?!?!

Then of course – there is that "Ole Boys’ Club" of the ulterior benefits of war to the high raking Generals and Admirals, who get thousands and millions of military dollars in payoffs for their blessings of these various weapons and many other programs – paid for by the BIG CORPORATIONS. And then the greedy bastards get hired after their retirements to work for the very same BIG CORPORATIONS.

THE PHILOSOPHY THAT WAR CREATES A LONG LASTING BOOMING ECONOMY IS SALAIOUS BULL SHIT! This will be absolutely contested by the Military/Corporate/Political Complex. But – then – these days they lie to us in front of our faces and intimidate us and everyone else into believing the Emperor has indeed a wonderful set of the finest clothing on.

There is a powerful argument against wars bringing prosperity. I believe we can remember the horrible economies during and after the Vietnam War years; the months of 18 to 21% interest; the housing market going to hell and housing loosing 25-50% of their value; the market failure.

Coupled with all this crap there is the horror of the loss or probable 700 G.I.s or MIAs or POW’s – which our politicians (Nixon) left in prison camps in Vietnam. And if we can not believe this – let’s read the book AN EMONRMOUS CRIME, © 2007. All rights reserved. From Thomas Dunne Books, hardcover, 640 pages, by former Congressman Bill Hendon of North Carolina and Attorney Elizabeth Stewart.

They say that many eyewitnesses have claimed to see these American G.I. Prisoners of War (POW’s) still in North Vietnam into the 1970’s and 1980’s and 1990’s, etc. They believe there is potentially as many as 500 of the original Americans still a live TODAY!

When did we loose our innocence? The book goes on to say that Nixon was made fully aware of the 700 American Prisoners of War in North Vietnam after the war. In fact -- North Vietnam back-mailed Nixon for some $4.6 billion in reparations for damages from the war. "But as the Watergate scandal broke, Nixon and Kissinger reneged on the arrangement, and around 700 prisoners were kept in Vietnam." (based on Coast to Coast AM interview with George Noory, May 29th, 2007). In the end – Nixon and his many consultants elected to FORGET our men (POW’s), who are in those prison camps.

Ah – Nixon – what a guy this bum was?!?!

"Stewart said she has worked for 20 years in Washington DC to uncover the truth about the POWs, and there has been much intelligence that has referenced the missing soldiers. Specifically, Hendon noted spy satellite photographs, one of which (see below) showed "USA" spelled out in 12 ft. tall letters in a rice field, along with a 24 ft. tall "Walking K" – an "escape and evasion" code only known to US pilots in N. Laos.

Hendon commented that in the early 80's, Reagan tried to get the POWs back, but advisors talked him out of it. By 1992, an investigation chaired by McCain and Kerry concluded, there were no American refugees left in Vietnam. Stewart and Hendon believe there could be as many as 500-600 POWs still alive there, and that the US government is engaged in a cover-up of the evidence for their existence." (based on interview on Coast to Coast AM with George Noory on May 29th, 2007).

Recently – the Hells Angel’s placed a copy of this book in G.W. Bush, Junior’s hands when they went to Washington D.C. You and I can imagine what little good will come from this.

When did we loose our innocence? Well maybe it was before this time when our government poisoned all of those American soldiers from the Atom Bomb Fall Out or when our government administered diseases to many other soldiers.

Well then is the Iraqi War MORE winnable than the Vietnam War – where we got our asses beat??? You have got to be crapping me. The convoluted Iraqi situation is at least 10 times less winnable and less resolvable than Vietnam. What a MESS. Our kids don’t know who they are or where they coming from.

They (our KIDS) are setting ducks for these bastards.

If you want to sense the fatalistic frustration, despair, and urgency in the words and comments of some of our young people fighting in Iraq, please read the article, by Micheal Kamber, dated May 27th, 2007, in the New York Times, titled

DOUBTS GROW AS G.I.’S IN IRAQ FIND ALLIES IN ENEMY RANKS. via site (www.nytimes.com/2007/05/27/world/middleeast/28cnd-delta.html).

G.W. and his Ole OIL BUDDIES are stealing millions every week based on what I have heard. These Intimidating BASTARDS don’t want to get of the BILLION DOLLAR IRAQI OIL TIT.

They ( G.W. and the other assholes) could care less about how many of our kids get killed or how many Iraqi’s get murdered. Can’t people smell and see and sense what these corrupt slimey crooks are doing???

Notwithstanding this – G.W., junior sold some $900,000 in personal stocks when he was on the Board of Directors for Harken Oil & Gas only a couple of weeks before the company headed for bankruptcy was bought by Spectrum Oil through G. W.’s very quick dealings through his political (Presidential father, G. H. Bush), and other to put this illicit deal together, etc. Harken really appreciated it because they gave him $300,000 in stocks and options and a fee of $120,000 more.

Was all this the criminal act of "INSIDER TRADING" done by G.W., junior? If you or I had done this – we would still be in JAIL. And this was his seed money to start his Presidential run before all his other criminal acts and lies.

Would you are I get this past a Securities Exchange Commission (S.E.C.) investagation? Well – I’m sure he used his Ole Man again – because there has never been an S.E.C. investigation. If your daddy is the President you can get away with anything!!!

But – one thing is for sure. This kind of information makes you sick at your stomach and then comes along a blatant arrogant lair and crook like G.W., junior.

My God O Mighty – this little smirking puke pisses in our faces and tells us that he is not doing what we plainly see him doing to us. He has NO business being the President and of course – should not be there – because he and his crooks stole the elections of 2000 and 2004.

BUT DISPITE THIS LITTLE JERK – YOU -- Cindy CHALLENGED THEIR ARROGANCE AND THEIR INCOMPETENCY OF LEADERSHIP AND their MANAGEMENT STYLE "BY INTIMIDATION". You really got under his skin. While the rest of us set on our asses and watched these bullies rape America and The American Way of Life.

I know my wife and I and one hell of a lot of American Patriots are very proud of you! You did the best you could.

BUT – WE STILL HAVE TO GET RID OF THE MAD MAN IN THE WHITEHOUSE. WE MUST IMPEACH THIS ADMINISTRATION BEFORE THEY RUIN AMERICA.

Sincerely,

Joseph & Linda Tucker"

Thank You Joe

Little sins, big sins

Great article, very well said.  I would only say that we are all guilty at some level.  We continue to look at others faults to make our own shortcomings seem smaller.  As someone once said "He who is without sin......" This world needs a complete change in consciousness or humankind as we know it is over.

Love is my only religion; the world is my family.

Frustrations

Yes -- I want to be spiritual and a creature of LOVE.  But -- since I still have one foot in reality -- I honestly believe that GUNS and CANNED GOODS are what I should be buying.

Sins are for God to sort out -- I suppose you might say.  And -- of course -- we pray daily "Forgive us as we forgive those who tresspass against us". But that one foot in reality will pull the trigger if I have to protect the Country I LOVE, The Constitution, The Bill of Rights, The Declaration of Independence and the Legacy of Our Forefathers who sacrificed their BLOOD that created the BASIS for our United States of America.

I want to forgive them -- but I don't want to do God's sorting out work either.

I don't believe this has been a TRUTH since WWII.  Meanwhile -- I will do as my heart directs me and God will sort me out when He gets me.

God Bless and Namaste

Joe

My enduring mystery ...

My enduring mystery will always be that mankind gifted with the ability to create wonders rivaling those of Natures also has the stupidity to destroy the very Nature that sustains him.

Well Said. I want to be spiritual and ascend like Enoch and the others into that wonderful Spiritual bliss of LOVE. I have even read James Refield’s Celestine books. And I went to "The Flower of Life" seminars.

In fact – I honestly believe that it is absolutely possible to meditate within the harmonies of the higher Spiritual LOVE patterns and transcend this yoke of clay to that place where God IS.

But – I also have that one foot in reality. And – I just guess I am just not good enough to transcend at this time or I have not evolved yet.

Meanwhile on this plane of reality and Earthly body – I am a fighter and I believe you are too.

God Bless and Namaste

Very Well Said

Great, you have really explained the situation in a best way. It is natural when a lady with broken heart like Cindy Shehaan has been crying for awaking the dead human beings for such a long time without getting response then there will be frustration. In the frustration and depression one loses hope. But this is my belief that one should not lose the hope. When we lose the hope the we will lose every thing.

The rulers may be not anwsering to the calls of the woman with broken heart, but there are a lot of people, who have also broken hearts. Cindy movement will bring positive change in the time to come. Actually Cindy is our leader. She was the first who challenged the rulers. Now there are millions of people and in the future the figure will be billions who will be challenging their rulers. This is my belief there are always reward for the good work. The day will come when billions of people will present peace award to her. The rulers may ignore her, but the poor people will certainly give the reward. It is due to her struggle that now the situation in Bajaur Agency, tribal areas situated on Pak-Afghan border has been changing. They have presenting their gratitude to her. You have won our hearts. The administration has failed to win the war on terrorism, but you have won the war. You have won the hearts of millions of people.

Thank you very much for such a great article.
