SATELLITE SHOOT DOWN NOTHING MORE THAN ANTI-SATELLITE TEST

The planned Pentagon shoot down of the wayward U.S. military satellite is nothing more than an opportunity to test new Star Wars anti-satellite weapons (ASAT) technology says the Global Network Against Weapons & Nuclear Power in Space.

“The Bush administration is magnifying the risk to justify the testing of new dangerous and provocative offensive space warfare technologies,” says Bruce Gagnon, Coordinator of the Global Network, which is based in Maine.

“At the time when we need to be constraining space debris-creating ASAT testing, this test will throw open the door to a new arms race in space.”

The Strategic Command’s (StratCom) high-tech Global Operations Center, buried beneath Offutt AFB in Omaha, Nebraska, will play the lead role in coordinating the ASAT test. StratCom now heads all military space operations since merging with the U.S. Space Command in 2002.

"The decision to destroy the American satellite does not look harmless as they try to claim, especially at a time when the U.S. has been evading negotiations on the limitation of an arms race in outer space," a Russian Defense Ministry statement has concluded.

For many years Russia and China have gone to the United Nations General Assembly with a resolution calling for a treaty to ban all weapons in space. The U.S. and Israel have annually voted against the treaty while every other nation in the world supports such a new legal ban on space weapons. The U.S. aerospace industry says that Star Wars will be the largest industrial project in the history of the planet Earth.

Global Network board member Stacey Fritz, Coordinator of No Nukes North in Alaska where so-called missile defense interceptors have been deployed says, “A culmination of events this month reveals the true direction of space weapons technology. China and Russia have formally proposed a new ban on space weapons on the heels of polls showing widespread public support for such a treaty in both the U.S. and Russia. Not only does the U.S. refuse to consider the ban, but also after denying for years that these systems have offensive capabilities, the rogue Bush administration proposes to demonstrate missile defense's anti-satellite technology. The doors of the Trojan horse are spilling open and the new arms race is on."

Three U.S. Navy Aegis destroyers, outfitted with missile interceptors, will fire at the satellite as it falls back to Earth from positions just off Hawaii. These same Aegis ships are now being home ported by the Navy throughout the Asian-Pacific region giving the U.S. the ability to encircle China’s coast. These Aegis ships could give the U.S. the ability to intercept China’s twenty nuclear missiles that today are capable of reaching the west coast of the continental U.S. The Pentagon has been war-gaming a U.S. first-strike attack on China, set in 2016, for the past several years. In that attack the Aegis ships would negate China’s nuclear retaliatory force by intercepting their missiles in the boost phase.

The Global Network is made up of more than 140-affiliated peace groups around the world working to halt the nuclearization and weaponization of space.

Fools!

We are rapidly approaching the point of a catastrophic chain reaction due to the density of space junk in the most used and useful orbital planes. We are on the verge of loosing our satellite infrastructure, and the idiots who are hastening this dilemma are China and the US. A foolish game if you ask me - not only loss of commercial satellites, but the "eyes and ears" of the War Machines in the US, Russia, and China.

You know, the ones that detect nuclear missile launches! When we cannot see what may be coming at us we will shoot blindly at all targets - not a very hopeful prospect. Lord knows what they have up there, as it is mostly "secret" black budget programs like Rods from God - DU kinetic weapons in high orbit, most likely nuclear powered weapons platforms, and chemical pumped lasers.

Truly a fool's game it is best not to play.

Space junk

Yes you are right.....the space junk problem is getting worse and will continue to do so with each of these anti-satellite tests.

Just the other day a space walking astronaut had his space suit hit by some space junk and put a bit of a hole in it......NASA fears that the international space station will be destroyed by space debris before it is even completed.  At $100 billion that would be quite a loss.

You'd rather pollute the earth?

I'm not happy about all the junk up in space, either, but, Bruce:

". . . nothing more than an opportunity to test new Star Wars anti-satellite weapons (ASAT) technology . . ."

And you profess to be an expert on what's going on? What city would you like the satellite to take out? What farmland or part of the ocean would you like to pollute? Are you so anti-government/military that you won't even look at the whole picture?

Am I happy that we have all that stuff up there? Nope. Do I want it landing on earth? No way. Do I want all that hydrazine landing in my backyard? HECK NO!!

I don't know if the Navy will be successful, but for the sake of the sealife where the debris will probably land if they aren't, I hope for the best.

And Bruce, once again, do some real research. Your one-sided diatribes are costing you -- and the movement for peace -- credibility.

Bruce your heart is in the right place BUT

you are incredibly wrong .. I "heard" from HAARP via my site.

There is a whole lot more to this than you think and I have been watching it, very worried for several weeks as I am NOT in the military and have to figure this all out on my own..

I am pretty sure I have figured it out and will be posting far better material that is all open source, but profoundly disturbing.

Things are happening all over the globe that are .. well, different.  . and yes we have been lied to so why should we now believe anything they say.

That is why I posted the article on InfraGard that no one is taking very seriously - but they should.  FEMA is alert in this situation, martial law might very well be called out and this has NOTHING to do with getting more ships.   this has the mlitary on alert day and night actually.  They're people, too.

I can see/feel/sympathicize with your concern, but we all have a lot more "surprises" in store before Saturday actually comes.

I'll put out what I can .. but from a civilization of view, Wired's blog,  to me, seems the best source of general information at this time.

Space nukes are the accidents to worry about

If you look down at our planet from outer space, most of what you see is water; 71% of the planet's surface is covered by ocean.

Only about three-tenths of our globe is covered with land.

The Pentagon knows that the chances of this military satellite landing on populated areas is miniscule.  They are hyping the fear just like they did in Iraq and now are doing in Iran.

If the Pentagon was concerned about toxic contamination of the people of the Earth with space technology they would not now be working to build nuclear reactors to someday power space weapons.  If they fell and burned up on reentry then we'd really have problems.  Like in the early 1960's when the U.S. military satellite SNAP 9-A fell back to Earth with two pounds of plutonium on-board and spread the radioactive fallout as dust globally.

Those are the ones to be concerned about.

re: "Space nukes are the accidents to worry about"

Of course, you over look the most egregious example of a nuclear reactor coming back to Earth, the one found in Cosmos 954 with a mere 110 lbs of U235 which was spread across the Canadian Northwest Territories and required a massive clean-up effort...but since that was a Soviet vice US satellite, it is somewhat inconvenient to mention,eh?

Not an ASAT test

Space-faring nations have an obligation to minimize the impact of their operations on the nations that lay below. This is especially true where hazardous payloads are concerned.

"Space-faring nations have an obligation to minimize the impact of their operations on the nations that lay below. This is especially true where hazardous payloads are concerned."

ROTFLMAO! I wonder if you typed that happy horse$hit with a straight face? Would bombs be considered an example of a "hazardous payload"? In case you didn't know, the U.S. government drops f**king bombs on people all over the world, generally for no good reason. In light of this, maybe you can tell me, since when does the U.S. government have any "obligation" to act prudently, morally or in accordance with international law?

Re: SATELLITE SHOOT DOWN

Thank you Mr. Gagnon for all of the hard work which both you, Dr. Helen Caldicott and your colleagues at the Florida Coalition for Peace and Justice have done in bringing awareness to the dangers which we face in our our space endeavors, and especially the Cassini probe in 1997 http://sonic.net/~doretk/Issues/97-08%20AUG/nukesinspace.html

Unfortunately, at this juncture in our history we're no longer capable of achieving the truth from our government regardless of the situation. Whether it is six nuclear warheads mistakenly carried from Minot Air Force Base to Barksdale Air Force Base (Oy!) and now with the Pentagon planning to shoot down this so called defunct U.S. military satellite. We are at the merecy of a chosen few. Quite sad!

Are they kidding?

Let's see.  The U.S. government deliberately set off about 100 nuclear bombs in open-air tests in our own Nevada desert, dropped about 1200 MILLION pounds of bombs on Korea, 800 MILLION pounds of napalm on Viet Nam, used 564,000 lbs. of depleted uranium in the first Gulf war, about four MILLION pounds of depleted uranium on Iraq in 2003 alone, 20 MILLION bomblets in cluster bombs in the first Iraq war, etc., etc., etc.  Now we're supposed to believe they're concerned about 1/2 ton of hydrazine?  If you believe that, I have a bridge in Brooklyn that I can sell to you, cheap!

our skies are full of crap

I have been observing our skies where I live. I walk every day and I also paint. Therefore, the skies are something I notice purposely for ideas. I am a very observant person. However, starting last year, Jets leave streams in our skies and remarkably this has increased to unimaginable levels. I am now counting 25 jet trails on a given day and then, it snows a day afterward. It's called "atmospheric manipulations". But, those streams (some call them Chem trails) carry HEAVY chemicals in them. We have no real "active" air base in Montana, (where I live) as it was closed, so it isn't normal AF flow. These jets even draw X's across our skies. It's changed our weather forecast today. We had predicted warm(40's) sunny weather and woke up to freezing(16*) FOGGY weather.

It seems we all have this horrible cough that few can shake(including me). I can only imagine what the "Satellite" shoot down will produce.

According to the General of the AF, he said it was the "fuselage" that they are trying to avoid from splattering on us. This was on CSpan in a Press Release on this topic. Course, who to believe anymore.

Just remember ppl, the Earth has the last say and no human can over power her blowback. NOT EVEN GEORGE W.HORE BUSH.  He is nothing more than a paid whore for corporations. As for us, we are just Guinea pigs.

Yes, we get to be the collateral damage and I am half there. However, these Bureaucrats don't KNOW who is beyond and WHAT is beyond our galaxy and you can bet there IS more powerful thinkers than us, regardless of their form. You know this is just continuation of the Reagan Star Wars program.

Russia is right. We WILL bury ourselves. The writing IS on the wall.

bad idea

Space debris from this may jeopardize the crew of the international space station. To about the same degree of risk as the satellite falling to earth. The hydrazine is toxic but the amount that would actually have reached earth had the satellite simply been left to re-enter the atmosphere, break up, and leak out, would have been negligible. Even if it had reached earth whole, the danger also would have been negligible unless you were standing right over it and breathing it. The tank has been described as having lots of tubing running into it, so any break up due to natural re-entry, or shooting it down would pretty much render the risk from hydrazine very, very small, as it would likely leak out before reaching the ground.

The danger of all this is the political danger. This represents an arms race. Russia has nothing stopping it from seeking to attain its own anti-satellite weapons. China, and now the US, have set the pace.

The success of the program also brings up the problem of now will we embark on a race to develope anti-anti-satellite technology further weaponizing space. This may have been part of the calculation. The mantra may well be, "we have to develope capabilities to address the dangers to our satellites. Most of the spy satellites aloft are ours, and we will damn well protect them from "rouge" nations."

This was a very bad idea. A good discussion of some of these things is here:
