All I Want For Christmas is...the Truth

Tell A Friend

This is the time of year when many of us take time out to count our blessings and, perhaps, say a few prayers for peace on earth. Of course, I want peace on earth, too. But what I want first is the truth.

John Lennon said it all:
I'm sick and tired of hearing things
From uptight, short-sighted, narrow-minded hypocritics
All I want is the truth
Just gimme some truth.

I'm tired of being lied to by President Bush and his minions. I'm tired of hearing his glib assurances about the occupation of Iraq, homeland security, human rights abuses, and everything else of consequence. I'm tired of seeing his disingenuous smile. I'm tired of seeing Dubya shrug, of watching his body language that tells me what he's really thinking is: "I'm lying; it's politics; get over it." I want the truth. Gimme some truth.

The last several weeks have brought more sickening revelations about the President's lack of candor. The bipartisan Iraq Study Group report observed the Administration hasn't been telling Americans the whole truth about Iraq:
There is significant underreporting of the violence in Iraq. The standard for recording attacks acts as a filter to keep events out of reports and databases... For example, on one day in July 2006 there were 93 attacks or significant acts of violence reported. Yet a careful review of the reports for that single day brought to light 1,100 acts of violence. Good policy is difficult to make when information is systematically collected in a way that minimizes its discrepancy with policy goals. [Emphasis added]

Meanwhile, Bush came out for an increase in the size of the Army, but said he hadn't made his mind up whether or not there should be a "surge" of troops sent to Iraq-and yet claimed to be "the decider." And, on November 8th, at the news conference where he reported that Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld would be replaced by Robert Gates, Bush admitted lying to reporters about Rumsfeld's status. He did his now familiar "aw shucks" dance: "The only way to answer [the reporter's] question, and get it on to another question, was to give you that answer." Bush was unapologetic about lying; he tried to sluff off his behavior as politics as usual

But, it's not politics as usual. When even the most cynical observer thought it impossible to set the political bar any lower, Bush has done it. He's given us politics Ala Dubya; espoused political ethics where it's okay to lie about everything as long as you win. It's the politics John Lennon referred to when he wrote about "uptight, short-sighted, narrow-minded hypocritics." And, I'm sick and tired of it: after all, Bush works for the people of the United States. He's not some corporate CEO who gets paid millions to fudge on corporate earnings so the stock price stays up. George W. Bush is our President: he's supposed to be a person we can trust.

The hard truth is that we can't trust him. Americans have seen too much of Dubya. As a recovering alcoholic, it seems he's replaced one addiction with another: he doesn't compulsively drink any more, now he lies. Bush may be sober, but he's certainly not clean.

What America needs for Christmas is a fresh start. We need to break away from the sleaze and malfeasance of the Bush Administration. Get back on the path to good government; reclaim our democracy. Talk straight for a change.

We've got an opportunity to do that with a Democratically controlled 110th Congress. The place they should start is by telling Americans the truth. We need straight talk about where we are in Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Middle East in general. We need someone other than George Bush to give us an honest assessment of where we are in the campaign against terrorism: what it will take to bring Osama bin Laden to justice and to protect the US from further attacks. We need to come clean about our defense failures.

Of course, it's not just Iraq, the campaign against terrorism, and homeland security. Americans desperately need to hear the truth about a wide-array of important issues: global climate change, human rights, healthcare and the social safety net, education, jobs and energy independence, to name only a few. America is in trouble and we can't count on George W. Bush to either acknowledge this or do something about it.

We have no choice but to turn to the new Congress. We should ask Democratic leaders such as Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid to provide the leadership that the Bush Administration hasn't mustered. And their first step should be to tell America the truth through public statements and congressional hearings.

That's what I really want for Christmas. Because I'm "sick and tired of hearing things from uptight, short-sighted, narrow-minded hypocritics. All I want is the truth, just gimme some truth."

I offered some truth on this site September 7, 2006

http://www.opednews.com/maxwrite/diarypage.php?did=1651 Lennon, Vanunu and "Give Me Some Truth" Diary Entry by Eileen Fleming A Short Excerpt: Lennon Connection On 9/18/04 in London, Yoko Ono awarded Mordechai Vanunu a peace prize founded in memory of and in the spirit of John Lennon's "Give Me Some Truth" released in 1971. The award is given biennially, and was instituted in 2002, when Israeli Zvi Goldstein and Palestinian Khalil Rabah each won for artistic contributions to peace in their homeland. In 2004, Yoko Ono also awarded $50,000 to New Yorker magazine correspondent and author Seymour Hersh, whom she described as "a staunch seeker of truth" for his investigative journalism. In 2004, Ono was quoted by Reuters that Hirsh and Vanunu were honored as "people who have spoken out for the benefit of the human race by overcoming extreme personal difficulties and, in doing so, have allowed the truth to prevail...Hopefully [Vanunu] can come and receive the award himself. He did complete his sentence, it's not as though he's a criminal...the point is that it's another statement, a statement that the whole world can share and think about...People power is stronger than the power of institutions." seek and you shall find, knock and the door will open "You shall know the truth and the truth will set you free." - John 8:32 e http://www.wearewideawake.org

Some More Truth

On September 6, 2006, Mordechai Vanunu was once again inside of the Israeli Supreme Court. He returned this time, regarding an appeal against the renewing of the restrictions against him which have forbidden him to leave Israel and to speak to media or foreigners, ever since he was released from 18 years in jail on April 21, 2004. The restrictions have been imposed in the name of Security, for the Israeli government has maintained Vanunu could still have a secret he has not yet told about the underground nuclear weapons facility in the Dimona. Vanunu has not been there in 20 years, and International Inspectors never have. On 9/30/86, Mordechai Vanunu was kidnapped by the Mossad and sentenced on 3/27/88 to eighteen years in jail, most of it in solitary. Vanunu was charged with treason because he broke down the wall that proved Israel had gone nuclear when he shared photos and his story with the London Sunday Times in 1986. Released from Ashkelon Prison on 4/21/04, Vanunu has lived under the draconian restrictions of the British Emergency Defense Regulations that forbid him to leave Israel, to speak to media or foreigners. He is currently on trial for the interviews he gave the media after his release in 2004. The media has been a no show for his current trials, but I have been following this historic FREEDOM of Speech trial in a Mid East 'Democracy' on WAWA: http://www.wearewideawake.org "30 Minutes with Vanunu" Is Streaming FREELY on WAWA

Hi neighbor and Happy Holiday

Bob, is it the entire truth you seek or only such as applies to the Bush adminsitration? I know you to be a very ethical person, and a perceptive one as well, yet I wonder as to your reliance upon persuasion of the new Democratic majority as the way to obtain those goals you seek. The longer we continue to live the myth of the two party system, the longer we fail to realise that the DLC led democrats are as wedded to the military industrial complex that reaps billions from our wars and imperialism, the longer we will live under its yoke. Even before the new congress is seated we have seen the example of the Senate majority leader rushing to support Bushs' request for more troops in Iraq. Is this Harry Reid's way of showing the money that he does not intend for the democrats to shut off the spigot? Does this in any way diminish your hope for the new congress, it certainly does mine. I am very convinced that the only way we will turn this nation from the path it is on, one that leads to making America a third world nation, with no middle class, with no clean elections, with all the wealth concentrated in the hands of the very few, as all statistical evidence points to already occuring, is through the ascendancy of third party politics. I see more and more each year coming to this same conclusion. This last election cycle saw the Green Party gain greatly. In their own words: "We elected 67 new Greens to office in 2006. We ran candidates in 38 states; and we were on the ballot in 31 states after starting the year with 17. The Green Party made a breakthrough in terms of debates, doing a great job when Greens were allowed to participate; and getting great press coverage when we were excluded. The Green Party received more votes than any other third party, in a year when third party or independent voter registration exceeded 25%. We accomplished a lot this year and intend to build on this in 2007. " So one sees, not only a defeat for the Republican Party but a general disenchantment with Democrats as well. Every Progressive, Liberal and Leftist should welcome this news, frankly. Those who are loyal to the Democratic Party (myth)should be undeterred from working very hard to wrest control of their party from the conservatives and corporatists. But they should also understand, after their efforts prove fultile as I fear they shall, that there are viable alternatives for them.

Chapter 52. Kongress Shields Amerika's Unclothed Emperor ...

== Chapter 52. Kongress Shields Amerika's Unclothed Emperor from the Naked Truth == By Larry W. Bryant [Author's Note: Whenever I see a brand-new UFO-related book on a bookstore shelf, my wonderment flares: "How," I ask myself, "can there be no substance to UFO reports (as officialdom would have us believe) when we consider the sheer volume of all the various UFO literature (domestic and foreign) generated since the mid-forties?" This same issue-management paradox applies to presidential impeachment: if the prospect (and imperative) for impeaching Bu$ch-Cheezey has no "legs" in the current political arena, then why are more and more pro-impeachment books, essays, talk-show interviews, public demonstrations, local-jurisdiction resolutions, citizens petitions, online-forum topics, etc., cropping up across the nation? Just as one need not be a "UFO expert" to analyze and assess the growing body of UFOlit, so, too, does (s)he needn't be an impeachment expert to weigh the worth of that political process in bringing the Bu$ch-Cheezey junta to account. Unfortunately, the incoming kongressional leadership -- its head buried deep in the Sands of Denial/Expediency (and its hands held out to Republican-styled corporate favoritism) -- revels not in the enlightenment afforded by the growing body of pro-impeachment literature but in the shallow, post-election euphoria of having lame-ducked the dual captaincy of that listing ship-of-state called the USS Amerika. This shameful betrayal of the people's will has prompted Harper's magazine senior columnist Lewis H. Lapham to revisit the theme of his essay published in the magazine's March 2006 issue (under the title "The Case for Impeachment: Why We Can No Longer Afford George W. Bush"). This time around, in his January 2007 Notebook commentary titled "Uncle Sam," Lapham discusses "what the Democrats should do now." With his characteristic insight and introspective wisdom, he concludes: "The question now before the country is the one confronted by the man afraid of finding out that he's been robbed. How much longer do we wish to pretend that nothing really happened, or that nothing really valuable is lost; that the crime is the losing of the Iraq war, not the making of it?" The day after my purchase of this issue of Harper's, I visited my favorite bookstore to buy a copy of the 2006 book "The Impeachment of George W. Bush: A Handbook for Concerned Citizens," by Elizabeth Holtzman and Cynthia L. Cooper. We of course know that former congresswoman Holtzman served on the Nixon impeachment panel. In the book's preface, she reminisces: "I thought at that time that our work [in the House Judiciary Committee] -- careful and bipartisan -- would send the strongest possible signal to future presidents about the need to obey the rule of law. I was wrong. Thirty-three years later, the same issues, the same arrogance, the same abuse of power emanate from the White House, threatening our constitutional system. President Bush had completed one year of his second term when the illegal wiretapping scheme became public. The president's response was to carry on, regardless of the law against it and regardless of his constitutional duty to faithfully execute the laws of the United States. The only way to stop him is impeachment."] SCHMOE [chuckling as he examines a computer printout of a fake photo of Bu$ch's crowned head superimposed upon an anonymous young man's naked body, whereby the "war president's" hands are holding a huge sombrero over the royal genitalia -- the caption reading: "Can't let too much sunlight shine on this tender tool!"]: Take a look at this, guys [passing the printout to Cheezey]. It just arrived at our generic e-mail address [president@whitehouse.gov]. CHEEZEY [forming his patented "go-blank-yourself" sneer]: Well, Dubya, if your "tool" truly is THAT big, why worry about a few carcinogenic sun rays? If ya got it, flaunt it -- right? BU$CH: Are you challenging me to "put up or shut up," Dick? I thought we'd settled that matter when we asked Rich Kannon to join us in the hot tub last summer. TROVE: That we did. No need to reopen that contest. Let's focus on the 'residential Daily Brief from the CIA. I've got an eye doctor's appointment at the Navy Yard, at two, so I, uh . . .. CHEEZEY [interrupting by nervously clicking his Parker pen]: All right, then. I just noticed something on page four, about a recent fire in downtown Muskogee. Did you arrange for that little distraction, Karl? TROVE: Not this time. I'd thought about that kind of not-so-subtle warning to the Pippin Paladins (as Bryant likes to call 'em). But I've been just too busy to come up with a plan. It wouldn't surprise me if the Agency learns that some al Qaeda operative set that fire with the intention of shifting the blame to us. I understand that the Muskogee fire marshal recovered, near the scene, a cell phone of the type used to detonate improvised explosive devices. CHEEZEY: Well, Karl, keep on top of this development. As the saying goes: it's easier to fight al Qaeda in Muskogee than in LaFayette Park. Next? TROVE: The Brief mentions that SecDef Robert Gates will be visiting Fort Sill, Okla., soon -- to deliver a morale-boosting speech at their annual cannoneers conference. Doncha think we'd better beef up his security for that trip -- just in case there truly is an active al Qaeda cell in the region? BU$CH: Good idea. Let's contract with the Wackenbutt firm to field a special team of under-cover protectors for Gates's visit. I've got a second cousin who's just become employed by the Wack-ers, and HE could use a little morale-boosting (if you know what I mean). CHEEZEY [yawning]: Speakin' of Gates: shouldn't we invite him to attend our next session? I hear he has a sharp eye for sinking long putts, so I want him on my team when we start the '07 season at McNair's course. SCHMOE: Yeah, let's invite him next week. Here, I'll type in a reminder for our tentative schedule [turning to the keyboard of his laptop]. [At that moment, the laptop emits a puff of acrid smoke -- the result of its battery's overheating. Schmoe lurches forward, then back, as he tries to smother the ensuing burst of flame with his totebag, exclaiming: "This is the second laptop I'm gonna hafta replace this month! At this rate, we're not gonna get anything important done until, say, Martin Luther King Day."] http://www.bushbusiness.com/Bryant_OP.htm http://www.PetitionOnline.com/gjprobe/petition.html http://www.PetitionOnline.com/nmgrand/petition.html http://www.PetitionOnline.com/arrest/petition.html http://www.PetitionOnline.com/edlvega/petition.html http://www.waifllc.org larryB@jerrypippin.com

The Truth

Bob, Thank you for saying what I feel, too. I want the truth. Trouble is getting truth out of the Bush Administration is like wringing water out of a wet towel in a down pouring rain. I saw my first washing machine when I was eight years old. I was fascinated at those while rollers at the top of the machine that would press the water out of the clothes. That did it much better than my Grandmother could do it on the creek Bank in Pike County, KY, and I did not get lie in my eyes either. The only way to get truth from any Administration is through Congress. That is Congress' job. The Administration's job is to lie and Congress is supposed to make them tell the truth. There are procedures that must and will be followed. There will be hearings on Iraq: why were we told what we were and none of it proved true? Don't want to tell? Subpoena power. I love subpoena power, especially when it ain't me. Contempt of Congress is serious business, almost as serious as swearing a lie, ask Clinton. There will be hearings on the supply lines of our soldiers, the contaminated water, the high gas prices for the Iraqis, the no bid contracts to Halliburton with the seventy billion dollars that is missing without any service or supplies or any trail to follow to find it; however, seventy billion dollars should be easy to find. Let me see: 70,000,000.000- a seven followed by ten zeroes is hard to hide, especially with finders fees. And this without the dollar signs. We Americans are better than bloodhounds when it comes to finding and keep dollars. There will be hearings on just how many Americans have been wounded and how many seriously. Those hearings will be next door to how many Iraqi deaths since the invasion compared to how many deaths in the previous three years in Iraq before the invasion. Has there really been 42,000 Iraqi deaths or has there been 660,000? Someone is lying. I want the truth. And Bob, There will be hearings on the elections in Florida and Ohio. What happened? Who did what? What part did Ms Harris play in the decision and what part did Jeb play? What happened in Ohio? How many voters were not able to vote? What was the reason? Witnesses under oath please. Please raise your hand, "Do you promise to tell the truth, the whole truth about...?" I like subpoenas. There will be hearings which will start about torture and confinement in Abu Ghraib and then Guantanamo Bay. But that is not the purpose of the hearings. We want to how many Americans are incarcerated without trial and for how long; we want to know about the secret prisons in Syria, in Egypt, in Pakistan, in the old Iron Curtain countries like Rumania, Bulgaria and I forgot Turkey. We want to know about searches without search warrants. When just get the High Drama started on these hearings, it is time to start a few about Katrina. Where did one hundred million dollars go in no bid contracts? Halliburton to the front row again, please, "Do you swear that the testimony that you are about to give..." Prison time or truth. Then we get nasty. Jackie Boy, you are coming to town to talk about "K Street." We want to how it works, who is bought off, how much did they pay, what did they do, from whom did you get your money. Tommie Delay, Ralphie Reed, Mr. Ney please take your seat on the front, "Do you swear that the testimony that you are about to give is the ..." I have a few more. But you get the picture. Even FOX Der Sturmer News, Unfair and Unbalanced will have to report to their right wing whacos who watches it more than I go to church and I am a preacher, full time-over time about the hearings and what is happening. Take that O'unReally. Yes, we want the hearings. We want to hear and hear and hear until the even the preachers in my own denomination scream for mercy and repent in sack cloth and ashes. Ah What a grand good time the next two years is going to be. January 3. Front row tickets being sold C-Span 1 and C-Span 2. Heck with the Fox hen house. Bout time. Phil.

We, the people, had better be ready for the Whole Truth

We cannot be satisfied again, by half truths and presidential pardons, simply because we want to move on. We cannot simply move on, this time. We did so before, and all the scoundrels learned is that they can do whatever they damn well please, because, even if they get caught, nothing really serious will happen to them, like loss of wealth and and power over us, not to mention liberty and their heads, possible. Time for dire accountability. It is now or, legally, never!

Pass Free, walk

Winterfire6, I agree. Many of those behind Watergate paid no penalty, but rewarded. A few of them changed directions, and one or two went to jail I do not really care about the going to jail bit as much as I care that those behind the "front" men pay the price. I doubt if it will happen, but we will see. Most of the those like Melon Scaith, those who run Halliburton are such international players, they really are are to touch.
