Aspartame Research Needed, Not Coca-Cola's Soft Sell

The Soil & Health Association is calling for open and independent research into how widespread the effects of the artificial sweetener aspartame are on the health and well-being of New Zealanders, following last week's admission by the Ministry of Health that there were links to adverse effects.

Soil & Health spokesperson Steffan Browning attended the Parliamentary Health Select Committee where Ministry of Health team leader and senior advisor for nutrition, Elizabeth Aitken, stated that there was clearly an association between aspartame and health symptoms, however considered that it should be investigated at the level of individuals with their medical practitioners.

"This is a woefully inadequate situation that leaves individuals to determine the cause of their distressing symptoms by chance. Many medical practitioners are poorly informed about the symptoms of aspartame poisoning, with the strong possibility that some severe cases are misdiagnosed as multiple sclerosis (MS) or that aspartame was even the cause of MS," said Mr Browning.

Professor Woodrow Monte, PhD RD, retired from Arizona State University, presented at the Select Committee in support of Wellingtonian Abby Cormack who experienced a dramatic reversal of distressing health symptoms by removing aspartame-containing diet Coke and Wrigley's gum from her diet.

"Ms Cormack's experience of bouncing between practitioners who did not identify the cause of her distress, and Dr Monte's presentation potentially connecting aspartame with MS, neural tube birth defect and breast cancer, shows the need for urgent Ministry of Health intervention."

"At the select committee, New Zealand Food Safety Authority (NZFSA) toxicologist John Reeves also acknowledged an apparent association between aspartame and adverse health symptoms, yet NZFSA fudge the need for concern due to their not accepting a direct link."

"NZFSA also mischievously implied that the formaldehyde produced in the body by aspartame consumption was excreted ahead of causing damage. Soil & Health finds the evidence of Dr Monte more compelling."

"Robust and independent research needs to happen in New Zealand on the effects of aspartame on public health. Overseas research that NZFSA and subsequently the Ministry of Health rely on has a strong industry base. This is an industry that enjoys huge cost benefit from using artificial sweeteners, which are much cheaper than sugar."

"With increasing pressure against the unnatural and dangerous sweetener, the Coca-Cola Company is meanwhile using direct mail marketing and magazine advertising in a 'make every drop matter' campaign that includes New Zealand Food Safety Authority's support for the controversial sweetener. Diet and sugar-free products often contain the neurotoxin aspartame."

"Every drop does matter, and the sooner any drop containing aspartame is removed from New Zealand schools and diets, the better," said Mr Browning.

"Following agreement with the government, Coca-Cola no longer sells sugar sweetened fizzy drinks at primary schools, but unfortunately the government has continued to allow Coca-Cola to still sell the more dangerous aspartame-containing drinks."

"Aspartame consumption has been linked to many health symptoms, including those expressed as ADHD, anxiety, depression, irritability, confusion, memory loss, insomnia, dizziness, migraines, cramps, abdominal pain, numbness or tingling of extremities, rashes, chronic fatigue, and personality changes. These same symptoms are increasingly expressed among our young people, and removal of aspartame may assist with a marked improvement in quality of life for some, their families and teachers."

"With significant diseases such as multiple sclerosis and cancer also implicated, precaution is best exercised by removal of aspartame products, with parallel studies being undertaken to determine the severity of aspartame's effects on our community's health, starting with robust medical research including neurological specialists and their patients dietary habits, coupled with a survey of doctors experiences and understanding."

"While some doctors warn their patients away from artificial sweeteners, this is not recorded nationally and many doctors are not aware of the risks."

"Should sugar be undesirable, Soil & Health recommends natural alternatives such as stevia, rather than the neurotoxic, carcinogenic, synthetic sweeteners such as aspartame."

Aspartame

Please do all you can to warn unsuspecting consumers about dangers of chemically altered food!! Industry has no conscience, industry is not a PERSON. Consumers ultimately control what is sold - give them the power by spreading the truth about dangerous food alterations. "Sweet Deception" by R. Blaylock is a great book explaining health effects hidden by the industry. Protect our kids!

Brief Summary:

Methanol in small amounts is present along with ethanol in beverage alcohol. [Murray: and about the same amounts from aspartame diet sodas]

The body's natural enzymes preferentially metabolize ethanol while methanol breaks down into highly neurotoxic Formic Acid.

Use of high levels of Folic Acid was found to inhibit brain damage caused by the methanol.

The use of Folic Acid during pregnancy has been recommended for several years to prevent neural tube defects.

However, this study indicates that even higher levels of Folic Acid can be very beneficial to the developing baby, particularly where alcohol exposure is a factor.

Folic Acid is mandated as an additive to all flour sold in Canada.

The debate has begun on its required addition to all beverage alcohol to help mitigate damage caused to both infants and adults.

There was a 5.5 times increase in the number of kids under 5 taken to hospitals for severe allergy in the 11 years from 1995 to 2006.

A review by Allan KJ et al in 2006 Oct., Medical Journal of Australia, said,

"Over 90 % of IgE-mediated food allergies in childhood are caused by eight foods:
cows milk, hens egg, soy, peanuts, tree nuts (and seeds), wheat, fish and shellfish.

Anaphylaxis is a severe and potentially life-threatening form of IgE-mediated food allergy that requires prescription of self-injectable adrenaline.

Delayed-onset reactions (occurring within several hours to days after ingestion) are often difficult to diagnose."

Pregnant women and infants are often exposed to methanol, an impurity in dark wines and liquors and also in the same amounts in aspartame diet drinks, that causes the body to make formaldehyde and then formic acid, both potent toxins that can increase susceptibility to allergy.

Aspartame & New Zealand

Having lectured in New Zealand with Abby Cormack, I also visited Food Standards. They admit they rely on our FDA and have done no studies. Our FDA was who revoked the petition for approval and tried to have the manufacturer, Searle, indicted for fraud. Unfortunately, the defense team hired the US prosecutors. Don Rumsfeld was CEO and said he would call in his markers and get it on the market. He was on President Reagan transition team and the day after Reagan took office he appointed Dr. Hayes to get aspartame approved. Knowing it would take 30 days to get him there he wrote an executive order making the FDA powerless to do anything about aspartame until he got there. In the meantime Searle sued the FDA which didn't get approval either. Jere Goyan was FDA Commissioner and was called at 3:00 AM and fired. Rumsfeld knew he would not over-rule the Board of Inquiry. Hayes did, putting this deadly addictive excitoneurotoxic carcinogenic drug on the market causing mass poisoning of the American public and more than 100 countries of the world.

What needs to be done is a repeat of the Trocho Study in Barcelona which showed the formaldehyde converted from the free methyl alcohol embalms living tissue and damages DNA. The big problem in New Zealand is the New Zealand Food Safety Authority which ought to be called Ajinomoto's New Zealand office. They ignore and disregard independent scientific peer reviewed research and accept industry's studies in defense of their poison. They stoop to using the most outrageous propaganda such as more methanol in fruit than in aspartame knowing full well in fruits and vegetables methanol binds to pectin, and there is also ethanol which is the classic antidote to methano toxicity. No ethanol in aspartame. It doesn't matter how many times you correct them and send them back to Chemistry 101, they continue to stumble the public.

They refused to meet with me when I was there even though I was at their door and had all the damning information. That was what they didn't want, the scientific peer reviewed research and government records that show aspartame is a poison. They also refused Dr. Woodrow Monte who wrote the peer reviewed journal article, Aspasrtame: Methanol and the Public Health, as well as Dr. Ralph Walton, who did a study on aspartame on humans. It had to be stopped with severe reactions showing if you do an honest study a poison will always prove to be a poison.
