Why We Do Not Have Impeachment

Tell A Friend

Over the past eight years, the craven cowardice of the so called left in this country has never ceased to amaze me. Ultimately, it comes down to one central question of how "progressives", and I use that term loosely, relate to the Democratic Party. There are examples of this cowardice everywhere but nowhere is it more evident than in the issue of Impeachment.

There is no question that the Bush Administration is one of the most criminal and Impeachable Presidencies in our nations history. From the electoral theft in 2000 and 2004, to Katrina, to the Valerie Plame Outing, to the lies and deceit that got us into Iraq, Wiretapping of US citizens, the list of criminal, impeachable and outright treasonous acts are quite endless. We have likewise heard many experts, such as Elizabeth DeLaVega explain just how Impeachable both George Bush and Dick Cheney are. Or just how important to the future of our democracy Impeachment of these two men are. We even have heroes such as Dennis Kucinich and Cynthia McKinney introduce articles of Impeachment into the Congress. In Kucinich's case, he introduced it twice. We have had attempts all over our nation, where Resolutions are passed calling for Impeachment. Some states even attempted to have State Resolutions passed, which would have triggered the Impeachment process, using the mechanism called the Jefferson Manual in the House Rules. Vermont even had two townships call for their arrest. We have demanded accountability for the most Impeachable, criminal Administrations ever.

For all of us in the Impeachment Movement, it is also undeniable that this call for accountability has been shut down and outright opposed by none other than the Democratic Party. From Nancy Pelosi's infamous call to keep Impeachment "off the table", to blocking multiple state Impeachment Resolutions, to John Conyer's manipulations to keep Dennis Kucinich's two separate Impeachment Resolutions stuck in Committee. It is now frankly obvious that the Democratic Party Establishment do not want Impeachment. Many will claim that it is because they want to improve their chances of winning the next election. Let us ignore the blatant cowardice of that statement. Let us instead analyze this, looking at the facts. History has shown us that when any political party implements Impeachment, they gain in strength as they are viewed by the public as being strong in defending their rights.

With that understanding, we need to look at the words of the Democratic Party Establishment in a new light. If indeed the Democrats would probably gain from pushing for Impeachment, then we need to ask why are they really opposed to it. I put forward to you that the reason is quite simple and makes too much sense.

Impeachment would do one simple thing apart from starting the process of accountability. Impeachment would start the needed investigation into the facts surrounding our nations entering into an illegal war and now occupation on Iraq. That investigation would make public the Democratic Party's lie that they were lied into Iraq. It would make clear that they were not lied to, that in fact they knew the truth and even more damning that they were a critical part of the lie. The Democratic Party leadership knowingly aided and abeited in the lies perpetrated on the American people, with the complicity of their friends in the corporate media. It is this simple fact that explains just why the Democratic Establishment has been fighting against Impeachment as hard as they have. They are afraid of having their complicity in the crimes of Bush exposed. They would rather loose an election to the likes of John McCain than have these truths exposed.

This leads to the cowardice of so many who call themselves progressive. From the pages of the Nation magazine to the Airways of Air America this perspective is never heard. Instead, we hear of just how "progressive" Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton are. There is nothing progressive about these two people. Your Emperor has no clothes. Of course, at this time we expect to hear explanations such as "well, they are the lesser evil" or "it is not them, it is the movement behind them that will push them forward."

The answer to this can be exemplified by two names, Al Gore and John Kerry. Both of these two "leaders" were presented with the specter of stolen elections and they both made a conscious decision to let it be stolen. To allow for the deliberate disenfranchisement of poor people, students and Blacks in Florida (and elsewhere) 2000 and Ohio (and elsewhere) 2004. Now some may argue that Al Gore did stand up in Florida but the record shows us the opposite. We have the now infamous Michael Moore movie, Farenheight 9-11 which showed Al Gore, gavel in hand telling the Congressional Black Caucus to sit down and be quiet. They were asking just one US Senator to challenge the electoral fraud in Florida. Later, we had Senator Barbara Boxer who told us that Al Gore had told her not to challenge the election in Florida 2000. Al Gore's supposed fighting back was in fact simply stage managed posturing. In fact, in both these cases, Al Gore and John Kerry actually stopped a real, progressive movement to stand up to the electoral theft from developing. That is the result of the lesser evil thinking. Yet so many "progressive" publications, radio stations and organizations refuse to allow this kind kind of dissenting voice into the mix.

You have also had multiple voices tell you about this complicity of the Democratic Party in the mess we find ourselves in. From Cynthia McKinney, Ralph Nader, Cindy Sheehan or a host of other lesser known activists. Ironically enough, the answer to each of these heroes have been predictably the same. They are attention whores, media whores and Egoists. It is about themselves and their egos. Simply because they all did the same thing. They have challenged you to think critically and admit that your Emperor's have no clothes. They exposed the Democratic Party for their complicity and the liars they are.

Wake up progressives, the Democratic Party is where progressive politics goes to die. They are the problem, not the solution. Start holding those who refuse to hold Bush and Co accountable. Stop being cowards and stop being complicit in their crimes.

Impeachment

You are saying what I have been saying.  The Democrats fail to oppose Bush's  fascist cabal because, for the most part, Democrats agree with most of what Bush is doing.

Republicans and Democrats alike enable fascist empire.

You have it correct

You have it correct that the Dems wish to continue the occupation of Iraq. Thus, no impeachment as the occupation of Iraq and its associated profitteering would end.

Corporate greed (military/industrial complex) has no political party...

All 3 frontrunners are the same breed...CFR. The only real difference is that Obama and Clinton, like Bush, are willing to lie to gain the presidency.

Wake up, America.

Can't Argue with 'Success'

You hit the proverbial nail right on its head, Mr. Cavlan.  The "Politics of Fear" is thriving these days, because it works...to the advantage of both of the corporate-funded status quo political parties.

George Bush and his minions tell us that it's a jungle out there; and all of the beasts are focused on destroying the Amerikan Homeland.  Howard Dean and his minions tell us that the sky is gonna fall if we elect even one more Republican president.

The media do a good job of reporting all of these dire warnings.  Why not?...It sells newspapers...it boosts ratings...it attracts advertisers.  The wheels of commerce keep turning, sluggishly at times, but still more smoothly under "free market capitalism" than they could under some kind of godless socialism--the common bogeyman that is always lurking in the background, no matter what "Fear de jour" is at center stage for the moment.

The American public eat this stuff up....because old habits die hard, especially when we've so seldom been allowed even a taste of anything different.  We are tacitly assured, by the Conventional Wisdom and those who manufacture it, that  "This 'World As We Know It' is--and forever will be--the only world possible if we are to preserve our Freedom and maintain our Security."

"Those 'crazies' like Nader and Kucinich (especially Nader...whose name will live forever in infamy!) have no idea of how things work.  This explains why they never attract the support of any of the usual campaign contributors."

I can't remember any good man who has been so unmercifully slandered and demonized as Ralph Nader for "stealing" votes and "spoiling" elections that have resulted in victories for "The Greater Evil" in the last two presidential elections.  We've even been told that he's a closet Republican and does what he does out of a combination of ego and malice.

It now appears that "The Lesser Evil" is, once again, on the verge of snatching defeat from the jaws of what should have been a 'slam dunk' victory.  As the polls tighten, come autumn, the attacks on Nader (and on any Green Party or other 3rd Party candidate) will become more and more vicious....and those of us who dare to vote for anyone other than the anointed Democratic candidate will be lucky to escape the tar and feathers of post-election recriminations.

Gird your loins, folks...things are going to get very rough!

Thank You All

thank you all for the kind comments. It has certainly lifted my heart to see so many agree with this analysis.

I have come to the stunning conclusion that the Democratic party itself is the greater evil, not the Republicans. A greater evil because it fools so many into thinking that it is the way forward, when the the Democratic institution actually blocks and stalls real progressive political progress.

Like I have said, it is my studied opinion that the Democratic Establishment knew the lies about Iraq and parroted them, just as their corporate masters told them to.

My position on my opinion on the craven cowardice of so called progressive media like Air America or the Nation magazine stands. They consistently shut out, marginalize and demonize the voices of those of us who are dissenters of our nations foreign policy.

Fortunately, we are building up our own networks, without George Soros's money.

political parties

In 1792 President George Washington laid out in detail what would happen if political parties were allowed to gain control of the government.  So political parties have controlled the government for more than 200 years, ever since the election of 1800.  Political parties have not given us good government.  They have given us a Civil War, two world wars, numerous lesser conflicts, a series of panics, recessions, and a great Depression, corruption in government, a replacement of free and open elections with party controlled elections, rampant crime and dishonesty in society, and dwindling opportunity and freedom for American people.  What people in America need to realize is that political parties and their corrupt politicians are not going to see the error of their ways and repent, giving the good government we were promised.  They are going to see the error of their ways and attempt to hold on to the power they have over the lives of the American people.  They will use every unfair advantage, every evil device, every form of dishonesty, every cent they can defraud from the American people, and every falsehood they can employ to try to keep themselves in power.  How can we oppose political party corruption?

Not by voting for them.  Register independent.  Independent voters are the only people in America who can break the cycle of party control.  There is no way that the parties can stop people from registering independent.  Originally all voters in the United States were independent voters because there were no organized political parties when the United States started.  Political parties have been able to keep independent voters from becoming candidates for office by un-Constitutional nomination petition requirements.  They have been able to keep independent voters from voting by closed primary elections.  But they cannot keep them from registering to vote.   Register independent.

I can't agree entirely with this, Michael.  As far as The Nation magazine, I also consider their editorial positions frustratingly weak; but some of their regular columnists and contributors (Naomi Klein, Barbara Ehrenreich, Jeremy Scahill, Naomi Wolfe...among others) pull no punches when it comes to American foreign policy...and I think Amy Goodman of "Democracy Now!" also does a very good job of exposing America's foreign policy for what it is.

Even though PBS has become largely a tool of commercial "supporters", Bill Moyers still manages to maintain a surprising level of integrity that must rankle the powers-that-be immensely...enough so that I sometimes fear for his safety.

Let's not forget that even some 'popular' commercial programming like The Daily Show and The Colbert Report often serve up some cutting edge commentary that has penetrated the consciousness of an otherwise apolitical audience.

I know it is frustrating and maddening to find so little dissension where there ought to be general outrage; but I think the available alternative media do serve some useful purpose in encouraging critical thought.

Bill- A Reply

Bill,

I most respectfully disagree. First, the so called progressive Nation.  If you look at it's writers, editors and others, their entire policy on Nader or McKinnney is simple. Don't run. Not an analysis of WHY McKinney or Nader are running. Just, don't run.

Same thing with Air America.  All of their talking heads are squawking about how "progressive" Clinonn or Obama are. Nowhere is there allowed a deep political analysis  for the perspective on WHy progressives would support McKinney or Nader. Just a bunch of bleating on how bad Bush is and then how bad and evil Ralph Nader is. I expect that once Cynthia McKinney gains traction (hopefully soon) that the anger will be directed towards her, just as it did when Cindy Sheehan spoke her truth about the Democrats complicity.

Amy Goodman on Democracy Now at least allowed, for a very brief period of time to give both Nader and McKinney some air time. Not much but at least it was something.
