MTR News

This weekend I attended the Publicizing Truths with Consequence media summit in Santa Cruz, CA representing MTR News Network; an event sponsored by Project Censored, 911Truth.org, and Be The Media. Turnout surpassed projected expectations 3 hours into the first day of this three day conference despite a winter storm that produced relentless rain and wind. At it’s high point there were upwards of 250+ people. The organizers adapted to the overflow and hosted a great event.

A pow-wow of sorts to brainstorm and put into action a more effective means of communicating to a public in desperate need of truth and substance. The event brought together an eclectic mix of concerned citizens, activists, and community writers as well as breaking news Bloggers like Brad Friedman of The BRAD BLOG. Award winning investigative journalists David Ray Griffin, Ray McGovern, and Bob Fritrakis mingled the room with Whistleblowers like Barbara Honegger and retired FBI Special Agent Coleen Rowley. Doug Abort - a representative for the Kucinich campaign, Congressional candidate Cindy Sheehan, and Green Party presidential candidate Cynthia McKinney also attended. All speakers, sponsors and organizers made themselves accessible in order to network, creating - maybe for the first time, a chain of media professionals that run from small town USA all the way to the influentials of DC. Speaking truth to power could get a little easier.

Fellow attendees Matt Sullivan, Editor of the Rock Creek Free Press in DC and Lenny Charles of the I.N.N. World Report said it best the first day of the summit.

Matt points out that,

“We control the web, but we are not powerful in the street”.

While Lenny brings it home with,

“It’s time to think outside the browser”.

With a participant list that reads like a virtual who’s who of today’s alternative media, this summit produced an inspired new army of motivated individuals ready to take on the challenge and rise above the corporate media. The theme seemed to be we are the new mainstream media and although workshop style gatherings were a bit disorganized most seemed to understand the theme and the need to find ways to apply it in their everyday lives.

OH-D Congressman Dennis Kucinich rallied the audience via a piped in conference call the first night emphasizing that,

“Independent media is critical” and the “Last best defense our Nation has” reminding us it is our civic duty as citizens of this democracy.

Coleen Rowley, retired FBI Special Agent stressed,

“I have heard every excuse in the book” for not trying.

She concluded that train of thought with a powerful call to action voiced by two little words when she said,

“Do something!”

Breaking off into affinity groups we learned the deeper meaning of communicating by listening and the importance of real news versus mere opinion. We were coached on identifying the propaganda and told by 25 yr CIA Veteran Ray McGovern that,

“We need to sensitize our co-ctizens” and “we have to speak truth to power” and that in order to do that, we need to,

Re: Publicizing Truths with Consequence

Nice reporting Ms. Roberts.

It sounds like it was a rather productive summit ? I'm sorry to hear about Ray McGovern who is indeed a true Patriot. I had the pleasure of listening to both Mr. McGovern and former UN Weapons Inspector Scott Ritter during a 2006 anti-war, peace forum here in Pennsylvania. Mr. McGovern is a brilliant man and quite an eloquent speaker.

And I.N.N.'s Lenny Charles was there too? I really dig listening to Lenny. I wish that I had the capitol to fully fund I.N.N. World Report, which is essentially the only (Truth) news program I'll listen to. Everything else is just feckless propaganda.

By any chance Ms. Roberts, might this media summit be working it's way to the East Coast ?

Thank you and yes.

The summit was very productive for those who wanted it to be, like myself. I believe in networking effectively and hope that the connections I personally made hold.

Ray is indeed an eloquent speaker. His humbleness and sincerity shine through.

The McKinney/McGovern piece is nearly ready. I have no control of the editing process on my team so am I anxiously awaiting what they produce from it (I believe it will be up today). Let's just say that it was really awesome to just let the two speak. Ray was very gracious with his time with us as was Cynthia.

Lenny Charles will also be running our on camera interviews on INN once we launch them on MTR.

There were indeed people present that represented the east coast. I would suggest contacting Matt from The Creek (Rock Creek Free Press).

One of the things I wish to happen is that we bring more people from our own communities to the surface, give them a platform and encourage their participation in this process. I have a notice up on MTR as well as my personal arm to MTR, Piper's Press.

"We" do not control the web

Thank you for your article and all of your work for truth.

I disagree with the quote "We control the web."

I think it is indicative of the difficulty the assorted truth movements have in delivering their messages to the public. Very little respect is given to what they are up against. The status quo is powerful and is AMONG THEM. There are plenty of "them" to be found right on this site alone.

One technique used by the powers that be is to infiltrate leadership of a movement. This is the most efficient method of control.

It is really important that people realize that the person standing next to them may desire and entirely different result than is being advertised. This explains why your excellent article can be seen here and not at the WashingtonPost.com.

We do not control the web and, once we realize that we don't, we can identify who is "working for the other team" and can begin to achieve success.

There is a long list of internet alternative news opinion makers who are in the employ of the status quo. If you study it, they will start to appear. It's kind of fun. Like a puzzle. He or she will be railing away and then a quick, little, meaningless lie will be inserted and then...back to the truth. You will be amazed to discover who they are. Lots of big names.

We need to stop underestimating what we are up against.

Someone tells you otherwise? Maybe, just maybe, you found one.

Unity

One of the best things to happen recently to the 9/11 Truth Movement is the establishment and expansion of Alan Miller's patriotsquestion911.com . It has become a real unifying force and a way to show that the movement goes far beyond the stovepipe communities that have grown up. You should encourage anyone, whether in an identified profession or not, to sign up with Alan's site and register a personal statement of support. And if they are in a related profession - engineer, pilot, architect, whatever - join an affiliate group related to it that exhibits integrity and an intellectual climate in which you are comfortable. Alan has done a good job of organizing visibility and doing outreach by publicizing leaders in a number of areas who have spoken out.
