VETERANS FOR PEACE END ARCHIVES OCCUPATION ON HIGH NOTE

Wednesday, September 24, 2008 7:20 a.m.

Washington -- Five military veterans, all members of Veterans For Peace, are breaking camp from their perch on the National Archives building this morning, taking with them their 22x8-ft. banner demanding "DEFEND OUR CONSTITUTION. ARREST BUSH AND CHENEY: WAR CRIMINALS!" that has overlooked their 24-hour action on a narrow ledge 35 feet above Constitution Ave.

Tarak Kauff, 67, former Army Airborne, who provided ground support throughout, said in a phone interview, "We're always told to 'write your Congressman,' and we have. Only this time we brought a letter they couldn't miss. We've made our point writ large that Bush and Cheney are war criminals and must be arrested and prosecuted. Impeach them if we can, but we're not holding our breath for Congress to act. The kingpins of this criminal administration will be brought to justice, along with many of their lieutenants."

Elliott Adams, VFP president, by phone from his spot on the ledge overlooking the entrance to the Archives Building, said "This turned out excellent. We're very happy with the response we've gotten to arrest Bush and Cheney for war crimes. We considered staying longer this time but we are not prepared for longer than this...although we may be back again, soon." (courtesy of Mike Ferner, VFP)

VFP members participating in the Archives action are: Elliott Adams: 61, NY, VFP President and former Army paratrooper in Viet Nam; Ellen Barfield: 52, MD, former U.S. Army Sgt., full-time peace and justice advocate; Kim Carlyle: 61, NC, mountain homesteader, former Army Spec 5; Diane Wilson: 59, TX, shrimp boat captain, former Army medic; Doug Zachary: 58, TX, VFP staff, former USMC LCpl discharged as a conscientious objector; and Tarak Kauff (ground support) 67, NY, painting contractor, former U.S. Army Airborne.

9:15 P.M. UPDATE:

Checking in with Elliott Adams, President VFP, one of five Veterans for Peace occupying the ledge of the National Archives Building at 35-feet.

Regarding exchanges with authorities Elliott reports, "We’ve had a few more proposals of the ‘great deal’ we could get if we’d just get off the damn ledge. We respectfully declined."

Plans for the night? "We’re on the ledge trying to settle down. We’ve got lights on the banner. We’ve setup five two-hour watches so we’ll have somebody on watch all night, we brought up sleeping pads and space blankets." Elliott reported a steady stroll of curious onlookers and folks on the ground handing out flyers.

He continued, "The Archive guards have mounted a watch on us to make sure we don’t do…whatever...but, the other police forces have shown up periodically. It was pretty funny, for a long time they were trying to figure out who had jurisdiction. One group would come and they’d leave and then another group would come with their sirens going and they’d leave. It caused some kind of conundrum where the DC police didn’t think they had jurisdiction because it was Federal property, but the Archives doesn’t have a contract with the Federal police..."

Asked what he anticipates will happen when/if they descend tomorrow morning, Adams was unsure. "I have no idea. We can’t figure that out. Part of it depends on the shift changes. This morning it was the Archives people that were wanting to get us arrested and the DC Police were like ‘I don’t know…’ This evening the Archive guy was real nice and trying to talk us into leaving." Apparently, Mr. Archive indicated to the veterans that with the shift change of the DC Police, things might not go as smoothly.

Sounds like a lot of good cop/bad cop games going on. Stay tuned and please leave a comment below so these courageous men and women know we’ve got their back. If you are in the area and can stop by early a.m. to offer some moral support even better. - Cheryl Biren-Wright

Thus far - and no surprise - this is not receiving attention from the corporate media. CNN did, however, manage to post in their breaking news section that Abe Vigoda is still alive, well thank God, now I can get on with my day.

I was joking, here are a few more of CNN's headlines as I was speaking to Elliott Adams, president of VFP and Vietnam veteran, who was standing on the ledge of the National Archives Building in an attempt to save the Constitution:

Reply: Hey Daveys?

Why the snotty comment directed at these Vets? This is hardly the first action they've taken on the issue and it won't be their last. In fact, Elliott Adams himself testified in defense of the Constitution at Conyers (albeit bogus) hearings in July. How 'bout you?

No News is Good News (for the government)

If it makes you feel any better, I've spread this article around a bit, and shamed CNN in an email about how their unwillingness to report such a historic moment only further broadcasts their desire to shield such impeachment initatives from the uneducated public.

Which is really a huge mistake considering over a million people have signed a petition for the immediate impeachment of President Bush.

I'm thankful

terribly thankful that these few people can still exhibit courage and faith in American ideals while the rest of America watches American Idol, feeds the dog and runs to the store for a beer.

It's staggering to me that most Americans are typically brainwashed by mainstream media to believe what "they," whoever "they" really are, wants them to believe.

Belief that change from within will take place is similar to believing that the earth is flat or that the sun revolves around it.

VETERANS TO IMPEACH AND VETERANS AGAINST THE WAR. THEY SWORE TO UPHOLD THE CONSTITUTION AND THAT IS WHAT THEY ARE DOING. AS FAR AS THE WAR, THIS IS EXACTLY HOW VIETNAM RALLIES STARTED WITH NO NEWS COVERAGE AND THEN NEGATIVE NEWS COVERAGE AS IF THEY ALL WERE POT SMOKERS AND DRUGGIES. IT TOOK YEARS BUT WE DID IT. I DON'T THINK IT IS QUITE THE SAME AS VIETNAM OPENED THE ROAD TO OPEN DISAGREEMENT TO A WAR DECISION AND WHEN THE AMERICAN PEOPLE FOUND OUT THEY  WERE LIED TO, IT HIT THE FAN. AS A PAST VETERANS BENEFITS COUNCELOR, I AM FLAT AGAINST ANY WAR AS THEY HAVE TO FIGHT TO GET WHAT WAS PROMISED. THIS GROUP IS COMING BACK WITH PTSD AND NO HELP AVAILABLE. I TELL THEM TO FIND A VIETNAM GROUP AND THEY WILL TELL THEM WHERE TO FIND GOOD HELP. I AM WITH ALL OF THEM IN MY HEART AND WITH LOVE. AS FAR AS OUR CONSTITUTION, IT HAS BEEN GONE AS LONG AS BUSH/CHENEY HAVE BEEN IN OFFICE. CONGRESS HAS SAT ON THEIR HANDS PLAYING COWARD AND HELPLESS WHILE THE CONSTITUTION HAS BEEN PEE'D ON. I BLAME BOTH PARTIES. BUSH SWORE TO UP HOLD OUR CONSTITUTION AND HE DIDN'T. IMPEACH IS NICE COMPARED TO WHAT HE AND CHENEY DESERVE. I AM TELLING ALL OF THESE VETERANS TO GO TO VETERANS GROUPS STARTING WITH VIETNAM VETERANS OF AMERICA, AMERICAN LEGION, VFW AND SEE IF YOU CAN GET SUPPORT AND COVERAGE FROM THEM IN THEIR OWN NEWPAPERS. VIETNAM VETERANS OF AMERICA STARTED BECAUSE THE OTHER ORGANIZATIONS WOULDN'T SUPPORT THEIR CONCERNS. THEY, TOO WERE TREATED SHABBY. I WAS RAISED BY A VETERAN OF WWll AND TO HIM, A VETERAN WAS A VETERAN WAS A VETERAN. IT WAS THE GOVERNMENT, NOT THE VETERANS THAT FOLLOWED ORDERS.  NEAR THE END OF VIETNAM, HE EVEN TURNED AGAINST THE GOVERNMENT BECAUSE THE WAR WAS WRONG AND WE WERE LIED TO.  IF I HEAR OF ANYTHING IN THE SEATTLE AREA, I WILL BE GLAD TO GO AND ATTEND AND GIVE BACKING TO OUR VETERANS. I LEARNED IN THE 60'S TO NEVER LISTEN TO OFFICERS SAY HOW THE WAR WAS GOING AND HOW IT WAS JUSTIFIED. THIS WAR ISN'T JUSTIFIED, NO WAY, NO HOW. PEACE MY HERO'S

God Bless These People

I truly wish I could be there supporting the men and women who want to see our Constituion obeyed and  remove men like George Bush from politics.  I supported Ron Paul because he is a man of his word, believes in the Constituion and has preached the same message for years.  Live by what our Founding Fathers gave us to maintain our freedom and obey the US Constitution.  Lets get it back people!!!!!  Remember one thing.  There is no right way to do the wrong thing.  George Bush has broke that rule over and over again.  The sad thing is, the two canidates who are running for President are no better.

True patriots

While our poor excuse for a president is giving his farewell BS speech to the UN General Assembly, true patriots are speaking out to defend our Constitution. The whole world knows Bush is a hypocrite and a war criminal, but our Congress and the corporate media continue to say the emperor has clothes, in the face of bare ass lies. We need to hold this administration accountable with straight talk of truth to power. I salute the true patriotic veterans up on the ledge.

These men and women are true patriots Huzah!

As an enlightened and Constitutional minded true American, I have great pride for these Vets. If only more Patriots of the Constitution had the courage  these brave Americans have, none of us would be in this mess to begin with. Unfortunately we have become a nation of complacent sheep looking for handouts and willfully giving up our freedoms for false security. I commend and salute these TRUE patriots in their successfully exhibit of their first amendment rights. It is amazing the fascist and totalitarian regime like actions that the Bush administration along with their counterparts in crime ( The Federal Reserve PRIVATE ) have brought upon this once ... a long time ago, great nation.  Wake up people and smell surveillance, the warrantless wiretapping, the street corner cameras, the e-mail censoring and screening, the suspension of "Posse comitatus" ( allowing US military to invade and act against US citizens and peaceful protests and civil disobedience and on and on. How much more bastardizing of what's left of the Constitution will you all allow big brother and his elite friends like the Rockefellers, Rothschilds and the rest of the Federal reserve and global elite family to get away with. Don't you think the last century was long enough?

When will we all draw the line in the sand!

Blessing and peace be with these true patriots.

First, contact the media and ask them to cover the story or report on it. AP did send out a brief article that any newssite can use. Here is a link to media contact info posted by F.A.I.R. here

You can donate to Veterans for Peace to support their continued efforts - these men and women work year round on many campaigns in the pursuit of peace. Here is their donate page.

Forward this article to all your list serves so people can learn what they've done since the corporate owned media has abandoned them. Ask your friends and family to leave a comment here for them to read when they come down.

Thanks for asking. Will continue to update.

Brothers/Sisters of the Real America

Once again it is the volunteer militia that has to take things into their own hands and show what must be done.   I realize that most of you reading this have been pushing for this just as I have but we have been some what limited by our medium(the internet).    The really sad part of this very patriotic movement is that the so-called "free press" will not even mention this either in newsprint or on the air.   If they do make any mention of it they will lie as to what they are doing or who is doing this.   While I was in the Navy I always considered saluting to be somewhat silly, however, these patriots deserve a very big and smart salute from all of us!

Where the hell do they find these reporters?

Is there a test one takes for being clueless to become a reporter these days?

This idiot asks "There have been times when our Constitution was really in trouble, you really don't think this is one of them do you?" and the topper, "What do you mean they're violation it (Constitution), how so?"

And as if the questions weren't bad enough they were asked in a very condescending manner.

It's interviews like this that show how our media is not our media at all, but simply a branch of a governmental propaganda wing.

But what standard does someone say they're a member of the press and does not recognize how our Constitution has not been violated by this administration? Do they live in closets? On another planet? Are their brains so devoid as to wake-up every day with a clean slate learning how to talk and walk all over again before they take a step out the door?

Kudos to the Col. for not losing her temper with this idiot, for if it were me, I would have beat this idiot over the head with his own mic.

Not sure Mr. M. but I think the questions were being posed as devil's advocate type questions to give Col. Wright the opportunity to respond to the thinking of the uninformed. He definitely was not a corporate media type. Think he was on our side, just had a different way of going about things.

As for Col. Wright keeping her cool - the Colonel's been up against the likes of O'Reilly. This was nothing.

Veterans protest Bush/Cheney at National Archives Building

I am thrilled to read of this action.  I am very encouraged and moved by these vets, among them our friend Ann Wright, who has joined the Grandmothers Against the War rallies and vigils on many occasions.  When we grannies (later known as the Granny Peace Brigade) attempted to enlist in the military at the Times Square Recruiting Station on October 17, 2005, we felt somewhat alone in our efforts.  We were arrested, jailed and put on trial for six days -- we were acquitted, thank God.  Since then, more and more people have engaged in peaceful non-violent civil disobedience.  We like to think we inspird a little of it.  This very creative action by the Vets for Peace is heart-warming indeed, and I send my congratulations.

Super Report

I've been supporting Ron Paul for two years now. His message was defend the Constitution, stop the wars, close the foreign bases and quit interfering in forein governments. Trade, talk and be friends with all. Elimante the Federal Reserve (foreign banking cartel) and it's enforcement strongarm the IRS. We are moving into a corporate fascis state, with FEMA prisons and the use of the military on the streets of America.  All hell will be breaking out around the country. May God help us against this tyranny.
