Tomorrow, Rep. Conyers will hold a hearing entitled, "Executive Power and its Constitutional Limitations." This article is a reprint from March 2008. It illustrates Conyers' impeachment rhetoric since '06 and details the failed attempts at accountability by the Democratic majority of the Bush/Cheney crimes. Let them know our country deserves better.

Lawless. Imperial. Rogue.

These labels have been attached to the Bush administration for the last three Take Back America (TBA) conferences. The annual conference hosted by the Campaign for America’s Future, does a bang up job each year highlighting the dark deeds of President Bush and Vice President Cheney. And, what better man for the job than House Judiciary Chair John Conyers. Turns out, the better man for the job may be the pre-House Judiciary Chair John Conyers.

TBA 2006: Challenging Lawlessness

In June 2006, Congressman Conyers was on fire at the TBA session "Challenging a Lawless President." Still in the House minority, the great congressman from Michigan was hot on the trail of a lawless President Bush and his unbridled sidekick, Vice President Cheney.

Six months earlier, the congressman issued a report declaring, "We have found that there is substantial evidence the president, the vice-president and other high ranking members of the Bush administration misled Congress and the American people regarding the decision to go to war in Iraq; misstated and manipulated intelligence information regarding the justification for such war; countenanced torture and cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment in Iraq; and permitted inappropriate retaliation against critics of their administration."

Just before the conference, Representative Nancy Pelosi fearful of emboldening the Republicans during a critical election season, declared impeachment to be "off the table." But when Representative Conyers approached the podium, he brought the TBA participants to their feet as he announced his next course of action. In brief, he introduced a resolution (H. Res. 635) that would create a select committee with subpoena authority to investigate the misconduct of the Bush administration with regard to the Iraq war and report on possible impeachable offenses.

Inspired and hopeful, progressives hit the streets to help the Democrats take back the House and restore order in the government.

By August, Mr. Conyers had released the final version of the "
Constitution in Crisis." He described the report as "some 350 pages in length and is supported by more than 1,400 footnotes, compiles the accumulated evidence that the Bush administration has thumbed its nose at our nation’s laws, and the Constitution itself. Approximately 26 laws and regulations may have been violated by this administration’s conduct." Certainly enough to begin impeachment hearings when one considers President Nixon’s were prompted by a simple burglary.

Mr. Conyers went on to say that "The administration also appears to have used the war on terror as an excuse to eviscerate the basic protections afforded to us in the Constitution. There have been warrantless wiretaps of law-abiding Americans, in clear contravention of federal law, not to mention the creation of a huge unchecked database on the phone records of innocent Americans."

He lamented that "All the while, the Republican Congress sits idly by. Rather than performing its constitutional duty as a coequal branch. It has chosen to stymie any and all efforts at oversight. After six long years of deception, attacks and yes, outright lies, I am convinced the American people have had enough."

Indeed the American people had had enough and three months later they handed the Democrats both the House and the Senate.

TBA 2007: Curbing Imperialism

Fast forward to June 2007, when the Take Back America crowd descended once again on the Washington Hilton. This time Congressman Conyers was to discuss
"Curbing an Imperial Presidency." Senior staff member to John Conyers, Burt Wides, delivered a prepared speech while the congressman tended to business on the Hill.

"Since the last election we have begun to shrink Bush’s imperial presidency," Wides read. In what manner the "imperial presidency" was shrinking remained unclear. "President Bush has subverted the checks and balances that are the cornerstone of our freedoms. In most instances, the Republican Congress just went along with those abuses. The founding fathers must be spinning in their graves, not merely at Bush’s blatant erosion of their system, but also and perhaps more at Congress’ supine failure to protect the Constitution. Now that Democrats control Congress, we have a very clear and heavy responsibility to take back the Constitution."

It wasn’t enough that the American people elected a Democratic majority that promised to rein in Bush and Cheney and hold them accountable. They were now charged with a new task. These efforts, according to Conyers, would only succeed with support of citizen groups committed to the Constitution. These groups had already been popping up across the country for years. Many were part of a broad coalition that makes up the organization AfterDowningStreet.org.

AfterDowningStreet, led by activist David Swanson, sprang to life in May 2005 to pressure both Congress and the media to investigate whether President Bush had committed impeachable offenses. The coalition borrowed its name from the incriminating Downing Street Memos that emerged in May and June of 2005.

Despite the subject matter, impeachment was never offered as a viable solution to "curbing the imperial presidency" by the TBA panelists. It was, however, on the minds of the audience and questions on impeachment dominated the Q&A session.

After all questions on impeachment were shot down by the panelists, Bob Fertik of Democrats.com addressed the panel. To a cheering audience, Fertik asserted "I think you’re completely misreading the politics in the country. All of the polls report that the majority of Americans support impeachment hearings, a solid majority of Americans and it’s not even being discussed. The American people were way ahead of Congress on Iraq and the American people are way ahead of Congress on impeachment. It’s just time to stop with the ridiculous excuses. The American people know the only way to hold Bush accountable is through impeachment."

Grassroots Action

Determined to restore the Constitution and rule of law, groups made up of ordinary citizens, veterans, and constitutional experts forged ahead on their own. John Conyers had called for this and the people responded. Five weeks later, on July 23, an impeachment petition containing more than one million signatures was delivered directly to the congressman. When he told the participants that there were "not enough votes for" impeachment, a peaceful sit-in was held in his office. The group was promptly arrested and hauled off to be processed.

The following month, Congressman Conyers traveled to Newark, New Jersey to promote his national health care bill, H.R. 676 at the People’s March for Peace, Equality, Jobs and Justice. He found himself facing a diverse crowd of a few thousand calling for impeachment. The article, Dancing With Conyers, describes what happened next.

"In what has become routine now, Conyers fed into the momentum asking ‘What should we do?’ ‘Impeach!’ cried the crowd. ‘What should we do?’ ‘Impeach’ and so it was repeated. The congressman went on to declare that we needed to bring back Rumsfeld and put him on trial and the big question was to decide who ought to go first.‘Cheney!’ shouted the crowd enthusiastically."

Conyers going on vacation?

Conyers now has 39 pending "prvileged" Articles of Impeachment pending in his House Judiciary Committee, each and every one crying out for an impeachment hearing.

Should the Chairman forgo his August vacation break to hold an impeachment hearing?

Let's take a POLL to find out, Link CLICK HERE

A nation run by crooks and suckers.

Unions organize slaves.  Corporations organize crooks and suckers.  A huge corporation like the United States needs bogus factions to survive.  One faction kicks America in the pants.  The other faction leads them by the nose (false hope).  Our political parties have the same relationship to real politics as Playboy has to sex.

to keep impeachment "off the table"....the FBI is investigating (wife of John Conyers)  Monica Conyers, could this be a form of blackmail....? See the article...(remember the FBI takes its orders directly from the President) see article at Detroit Free Press........

OMG

This is all so ridiculous - I read that they can't say that Bush is a "liar" either tomorrow.

What do they call him then? "Fact obfuscat-or"?

This is justice? This is the democrat party's version of it I guess.

Why I'm joining the Green Party.

2008 - tyrants still rule the planet.

Medieval laws apply in this "civilised" year of 2008.  These laws allow for a certain individual in the US to arrange for people to be tortured, for nations, cities and towns to be destroyed, for thousands of innocent civilians to be killed,  while he has yet another "perfect day".   Yet no one in any Congressional meeting may call him on it, no one may name him for having wrought such cruelty,  no one may even say he has committed any offense.

And the irony - these "no accuse" laws were put in place to protect "the king" - the original King George.

2008 - another year of sadistic tyrants and babararians - What a tragedy for planet Earth.

I used to support impeachment.

ITMFA was the cry. For years.

Impeachment now would be a joke. If Bush and Cheney were impeached, their protector, Nancy Pelosi would become President until Obama or McCain took office, and in any event, since the Democrats have so thoughtfully funded the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq until 2010, none of them would have to worry about having to ask Congress to fund their war crimes.

The moment that the Democrats knew that the wars were based on lies was the moment that they should have stopped supporting them and funding them. They didn't. That makes them knowingly complicit in war crimes.

Here's how impeachment proceedings would go, if Bush and Cheney even bothered to show up (they usually ignore subpoenas from Congress because the Democrats knew when they confirmed Mukasey that he wouldn't enforce subpoenas or contempt citations against Bush):

Democratic Congresscritter: Mr. Bush and Mr. Cheney, are you guilty of the high crimes and misdemeanors set forth in these impeachment proceedings?

Bush and Cheney: Why ask us, Mr./Ms. Democrat. You voted for every single one of them. Would you like to switch seats with us now or later? If we ever stand trial in The Hague for war crimes, you'll be right there in the dock with us as you voted for and funded every single thing we did. We couldn't have done anything without your support. And we're going to tell the World Court that YOU were the ones who forced US to commit crimes against humanity. Now go f**k yourselves. ROFL

They are actively Blocking impeachment!!

All they have to do is get out of the way and ALLOW JUSTICE TO BE DONE!!  There have been many calls for impeachment, of both Bush and Cheney.   Some members of Congress have spoken out for it.  Impeachment articles HAVE BEEN PLACED!!    All Pelosi and Conyers have to do is to ALLOW THE NORMAL COURSE OF JUSTICE to unfold.  Instead, they have been BLOCKING it - They have been OBSTRUCTING Justice!!

Many members of Congress have said they would support impeachment or would certainly not oppose it,  - whether of w or of c.    But when have they had the chance to vote on that, or even to discuss it in Congress?   There has been obstruction for a long time, and now a token change only.  Instead of addressing what is really happening, they have become obsessed with antiquated rules about what may or may not be said - This is itself a further obstruction of justice.

I read the fable

From my limited experience I found a great deal of truth in it.  Our current political process is largely constipated (In my country as well as yours),

I'm not saying totally ignore government but to reduce your reliance on it.  Commit resources directly towards the change you seek.  The current size of government is an abberation.  Communities groups did all sorts of things they now rely on government for.

Remember the third V in governance is Village.

Here is the Truth....

Until Americans have the balls (ladies as well) to take politicians, judges and lawyers from thier beds at night, try them in front of 12 of thier piers and then have the courage to carry out the judgement of the court, we are all just slaves living to support our masters.

Until this country return to an absolute sense of right and wrong, the one that was here last seen maybe in the 40's, we are only on a path the only has a few years left on the calendar.

If you are religious it is Judgement day, a lab tech the tipping point or if you are just dumb and stupid, the what the hell is going on day.  No matter what you think it will be it will happen...Mark this comment for that day....

'Wrong' is the new 'right'.

Well said, Michael.   But it's even worse than the simple confusion of right and wrong.   'Wrong', or corruption, or harmful, destructive and cruel actions have all been called "right", and have been legislated as the established way.  Corruption has become the norm,  the accepted status quo.

Our Congress People are Traitors

Our Congress people are complicit.  They are corrupt.  They are traitors.  What other reasons can their be for their continued failure to perform their constitutionally mandated responsibilities?

Conyers is the worst.  He knows better and has written about what this President and those in his command have done.

I don't know how these Congress people can be going anywhere without crowds telling them what traitors they are.

But we just keep taking it.  There is no accountability.  The democratic experiment has been corrupted and taken over by the corporate and elite interests, the "money" party.

The rest of us, systematically enslaved and robbed of our constitutionally protected rights.

Don't get your hopes up

After all the contempt citations (and false hopes) issued by the new Democratic majority, I've not expecting anything tomorrow. What happened to enforcement? For instance, how come Karl Rove, Josh Bolten and Harriet Meiers still haven't been held accountable for thumbing their noses at Congress?

The Democratically controlled House could follow through with "inherent contempt" against them...but no...all talk and no walk.

So, I'm sorry to say Conyers' "impeachment hearing" tomorrow means nothing to me. Same old, same old. I've no doubt U.S. Rep. Dennis Kucinich (whom I greatly admire) is sincere but his fellow Dems are not.

I still don't know why the Democrats remain so spineless -- unless they have something to hide and/or are being blackmailed with information gathered from warrantless surveillance. And, yes, they're all up for re-election this November -- mustn't scare the American people.

After 7-1/2 years, nothing would surprise me.

Mr MCurrently I'm a cartoonist and contributing writer for The New Orleans Levee.

You do you people need?

A brick to fall on you?

There are but a handful of sincere politicians in office now and they're as ineffectual as a wet noodle in a slot machine, these two major parties do not represent you!

Let me repeat that one more time real slow - anyone in high office in either of the two major parties do not give a tinker's damn about what you think, they couldn't care less if you and your family died of starvation in squalor. Other than stripping you of what little you have left these cretins only think about you when they are trying to figure out a way to avoid you.

Jesus folks ... you voted them in to end the wars and hold people accountable, and you've got nothing but betrayed since! They can't even come up with near coherent excuses (not that they ever could) they just give you some crap answer that "they haven't made up their mind."

"Their mind?" As if over 90% of the people that now are calling for impeachment don't matter!!!

We don't!!!

Here! Have a brick! Have two! Place one in each hand - now slam them on either side of your head!

Feel better? Do you get it now?

But it's going to get worse - much worse - Lieberman is proposing a bill that will have every transaction you make by Credit Card tracked by your caring government. I suppose you wanted that? Right? No? Tough shit.

Of maybe you've heard about having to only be able to buy gas with a credit card, so your purchases and movements can be tracked? Didn't hear about that either? Aaah ... gee, just ask any of your friendly representative about it, I'm sure they'll be happy to give you a good reason for this.

National ID cards, food rationing, forced labor debt camps, rounding-up of dissidents all in the works, of course you wanted all this to be "safe", right?

What? They wouldn't dare?

Sure they would. Who's going to stop them? Us "little people?"

Not unless you're willing to bare arms, because I can assure of of this, they are not going to listen to any of us unless we force them out, not by the vote - votes don't count, litterly - not by our voices - they're not heard - if we want to be heard we'll have to do what our Founding Fathers told us to do when our government refuses to abide by the will of the people - REVOLT!!!

In case you don't now this, we have Nazi's in high office now. I don't mean to lighten that statement.

Prescott Bush was a Nazi. This is not conjecture. It's a fact. Do your homework.

Grand-paw Bush conspired to overthrow our government in 1933 with other Nazi sympathizers and was foiled by one Major General Smedley Butler.

They were thwarted than, but like today, not held accountable and have since that time have worked behind the scenes to complete what they couldn't back then.

Don't believe me? Google: bush/Nazi/connection and Operation Paperclip and have a field day.

Every action being taken now, or not being taken, is following the Nazi tactics to a "T". You don't have to be a genius to see the parallels.

National Socialism = Neo-Conservatism, a rose by any other name.

Want to know how otherwise well-meaning politicians in Germany during Hitler's rise submitted to his rule? Look at what's happening now, the only difference between now and then is that back then government took over industry, here we have industry taking over government, but the results are exactly the same - fascism.

Conyers won't impeach because he's either been blackmailed or threatened, it's what Nazi's do. First they try to buy you off, then they threaten you, and if neither of those two things don't work - they kill you.

I can promise you this - if this impeachment thing was going to get serious, if they though Kucinich could carry this off, they'd kill him. Plane crash, car accident, sudden unexplained aliment and he'd be gone.

Ron Paul's plane just had to make an emergency landing on it's way to testify against, of all things, corruption in the airline industry. Think that was an accident? Think Wellstone's crash was an accident? Young Kennedy's death? Or that Antrax was being distributed as they were passing the first Partiot's Act? Think it's coincidence that after the Reichstag attack Hitler pasted the Enabling Act with nearly the exact same wording as the Patriot Act?

Do you need another brick?

You want change? You want justice? Learn how to shoot.

It's that bad now folk's. It's something I would hope I would never have to say. But our government is gone and we're not going to get it back by politely asking for it. That time pasted September 11, 2001. It's a hot-war now. We didn't make it one - they did.

What are you doing about it?

GODD**M I hope we're all wrong!
