As if we did not have enough evidence already about the morally abominable nature of Sarah Palin, behind all the folks winks and value-drenched rhetoric, here it is displayed in rather clear terms that even people who resonate to her posturing should be able to recognize.

At least, if the stories are to be believed about how "McCain Faces Internal "Palin Insurgency," a plausible-sounding news article to be found through Huffington Post.

Here she is, going off on her own in betrayal of her role as McCain's pick to be his running mate, running for herself with HER future in mind, never mind what her ostensible boss wants her to do. She doesn't even have the decency to wait until McCain loses before taking the self-serving route in defiance of her obligation to support the man who put her in this position.

Her eagerness to look out for herself is not restrained, evidently, by any feeling of debt to the man to whom she owes completely this sudden elevation from back-water governor to prominent national figure.

No loyalty, no gratitude, no sense of a responsibility to serve. It's all about her.

Have we ever seen such a drama? I don't think so.

First, I can't think of any VP pick who came so much from nowhere. Dan Quayle was already something of a national figure: I'd seen him several times on national shows addressing national issues, becoming something of a rising star. And the rest have been even more major figures. So Palin's debt to McCain should be greater than Gore's to Clinton or Bush I's to Reagan or Mondale to Carter, etc.

And second, I don't believe we've ever seen a news article about a VP leaving the reservation and going off on a free-lance to advance her own political position even at the expense of the campaign she joined.

She's a doozy. And it says even more that not only is she willing to do this, but she also has so little sense of limits to her ambition that she's even willing to do it in a way that the rest of us can see.

Shameless as well as ruthless. Wow.

[This all assumes that the reports of a "Palin insurgency" paint an accurate picture of what she's up to. The reports/interpretations seem credible to me, but I must admit I'm not certain about this. Does anyone have anything to say about whether the premise of my remarks, above, i.e. that Palin is free-lancing for her own advancement and without putting a priority on what helps McCain, is valid?]

Andy Schmookler is running for Congress in Virginia's 6th District.
