Rapture of America

In a crazy time people need reassurance, people need support, and America often falls into crazy times. Americans often use God as their crutch when they can't think straight.

"You're reading the Bible. That's a great book," I say as I sit down to work in a café.

I smile and go about my business, nose plunged in my papers.

"Yes, we should all read it, especially now," a man says with a serious look. "You know the day is coming, the day of the Rapture when God will begin the End of Times and make His judgments."

Experience tells me I risk getting buckled into a long discussion on the Beast with seven heads and ten horns (Rev. 17:2), the ho of Babylon, and the whole bucket of Christian eschatology.

As a big word, eschatology is not one you'd use at the supermarket while buying beer and pretzels. In theology, eschatology is the study of the destiny of mankind according to the purposes of God.

This year is supposed to be when a large number of baby-boomers turn sixty years old. The flower-child generation was once all about some radical Jew's ideas of peace and love. Now, many of them along with some of their own children fret and moan about the whole process of Revelation as the Apostle John painted with hallucinated images and which Roman editors included in the New Testament.

John wrote it in the later part of the first century while laid up in the pokey on a Greek island called Patmos. The tyrannical, brutal Romans locked him up for talking too much about a rebellious Jew's esoteric teachings of charity, peace, and tolerance. Scholars say this explains why he refers to Rome as the godless Babylon, empire of evil and abusive military power. Revelation is a phantasmagorical vision of how God will re-set the world straight by grabbing people right out of their chairs.

Meanwhile, all a guy has to do these days is sit down for a cup of java and, presto, people around are studying the Bible for clues about their salvation come the judgment day, the Rapture, when God snatches good folks up into heaven, while the rest of us commonplace sinners are shackled to the earth by gravity to sort out apocalyptic problems like global warming, wars, and pestilence. In times of uncertainty, when our otherwise secluded nation is attacked, clutching onto the Bible and looking for God can bring a surge of warmth and security over one's soul.

I know this because the ancient texts of the Bible comfort me. Hell, while back in college, I sold my only means of transportation, a Honda 350 motorcycle, just to study the New Testament in Greek at U.C. Berkeley. How fanatic can a guy get?

The 9/11 attack provoked a new wave of religious fundamentalism and doomsday mania, although this preoccupation has plagued the human mind long before John wrote surrealistic prose. A recent cultural wave of fundamentalist reaction began especially when Muslim terrorists attacked certain icons of our nation's most sacred beliefs -- the towers of capitalism, our sense of security, or, according to some Biblical interpretation, Aaron's golden cow (Ex. 32).

With deep roots in irrational puritan soil, American history is colored with many periods of maniac politics and social mores. Works of art like the Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne (novel published in 1850) or, recently, the movie Good Night and Good Luck (2005), strip bare the frequent and bizarre extremism of American culture. The 2007 movie, September Dawn, dramatized how America's own home-grown religion, Mormonism, massacred infidels on a whim.

At times, we mere mortals are beside ourselves, at a loss for answers. We seek comfort and security in easy answers even if they are poppycock myths from a Bible and people wrote thousands of years ago, and folks still claim God dictated the words into Moses' ear.

When someone pokes our nest, we fly beyond our own imaginations and react in extreme ways. Getting swept up in the moment of tribulations, we can run to rash actions. Extreme reactions may be partly what the Apostle Paul meant by the term (rapturo) The Rapture (1 Thessalonians 4:15-17), the only instance of this word in the Bible. Yet the idea of the second coming of Christ and the end times has possessed the imagination of many Christians, especially the fundamentalists who believe that environmentalism is nonsense. After all in Genesis God says that man is to dominate the earth. Why worry about destroying the ecosystem if God is going to swoop us up to heaven in the near future?

With all the extreme politics today, we certainly could use more balance. Open debate, including constructive criticism, always helps a free democracy to survive.

I've studied theology and its relationship to government for many years. A few years ago I stumbled upon the web site of an author who I felt was on the right track, and I've monitored it since then. Now I feel he has finally gotten the message highlights complete. I believe, very deeply, that the message he delivers will actually change and save this world. It's what everyone needs to hear. You can read it at http://reformationcomingsoon.bravehost.com

Mark, that was GREAT!

You did a masterful job in writing that. I thank you and congratulate you.

The only thing I would have some slight comment about is the meaning of John's book of Revelation.

You were mostly right on, especially about fundamentalist right-wing Christians erroneously thinking these are the "end time" and that there will be a so-called "Rapture of the Church" whereby the "saved" and "born again" Christians will be magically beamed up to heaven while the rest of us are "left behind" while the world goes to hell in a hand-basket.

Not so.

Here's a more accurate take on the book of Revelation and the "Fall of Babylon":

http://reformationcomingsoon.bravehost.com/Babylon.html

You'll appreciate it.

Rupture of the rapture

Religious fundamentalism, particularly the Christian kind, has been a part of America since the beginning. For example, it was the central ideology, relabeled as 'manifest destiny' in the 19th century, to justify the plunger, purge and extermination of the natives in order to build an empire to the west. Nothing beats the Bible in enterprises of extremes.

While fundamentalism mostly took the form of TV evangelicals in the 80's, it did little harm except to those who abundantly deserve it. But, as of the early 90's I began to notice a transformation - from evangelicals to steal a quick buck from the fools, to fundamentalism for political power, control of economy and national destiny. All of a sudden, Christian fundamentalism gained unchecked national political power, reaching the peak as GW Bush took office and Congress dominated by a God-loving Republican party.

In an orgy of "God destined America to conquer world" policies, saturated with Biblical dogma and hubris last seen in the name of Mussolini, the high priests of neo-cons went wild. It was almost 8 years of non-stop sexual ejaculation to the world while masturbating to the average Americans. It was fascism American-style. In 2008, we see the results. America downsized on all fronts. Even the TV evangelicals are not making a good buck screwing the faithful.

And that as it should. America has corrupted itself almost to the same extent as the Soviet Union. The question now is: Will more Bible save a nation corrupted to the core? Maybe the Pope can offer some answers when he visits some of the thousand of victims of former alter boys screwed by his Church. After all, the Church got away with it – so why shouldn’t America?

Constructive Criticism

Warning...this response is long, but I really wanted to give my opinion about your article.

It's sad how people have warped Jesus Christ's message for their own gain.  It saddens me that many of His followers are extremely aggressive with His message, unwilling to talk to or address anything that seems outside of the realm of God, which encompasses everything.

People search for God during times of crisis because they perhaps feel as if they are not active participants or creators of the world and the events in which they live.  I highly disagree with that philosophy, that we have no "say so" in how things occur.  We are rational, thinking beings for the most part, and our lives reflect a worldwide web made of an amalgamation of individual actions  (Our lives are the make up the internet/world in a spiritual and physical sense... I guess it could be stated in that way).

If we cannot own up to our individual responsibility for the world in which we live...if Christians do not turn to God and actually seek His will on issues... people are directly ensuing chaos, whether they want to believe it or not.  People who are fundamentalists, claiming to believe in Christ should really look to this verse for inspiration to change their ways: "I promise you that God in heaven will allow whatever you allow on earth, but he will not allow anything you don't allow.  I promise that when any two of you on earth agree about something you are praying for, my Father in heaven will do it fo you.  Whenever two or three of you come together in my name, I am there with you." Matthew 18:18-20  This sentiment is stated directly in the same book again and in other books of the Bible, but some Christians act as if they have no say so in the things of this earth, and that we are all doom to die.  Jesus came to bring life, and He rules over the living, not the dead.

Some believe that if you are a Democrat or if you vote for Democrats in anything, that you are going against the word of God, and that is just using God to promote personal agendas, which God tells us will occur.  I'm not a doomsday Christian, but when things occur, I'm not shocked either.  I express what I believe is the truth, as I am supposed to do, but I don't deny that evil actions are occuring.  There is no way that people can say that the Constitution, the laws, the economy, and the entire security issue is not being used for the benefit of certain people and not for the entire country.

I believe it when God says, "God tells the truth, even if everyone else is a liar..."  Romans 3:4  The truth needs no interpretor, endorsing statement, or campaign.  It will be proven to be true time and time again.  Christian fundamentalists are escalating wars because we have not come to an agreement that there were guilty parties in 9/11 and we should find them, try them, and make examples out of them to stress the severity and evil of their actions.  We have chosen to wage a war against the world!  We as Americans can change our outlook on the world, but we must do it as an united country, as the real U.S., and that is why I find more hope in Barack Obama.  There will still be issues needed to be addressed in his future presidency, but I think he's more genuinely concerned about the entire nation than McCain.

I guess some fundamentalists don't read 1 Thessalonians 4: 11-18.  They don't do this.  Their message is war-laced, discouraging, and interested in converting people.  Christians are not seeking to convert people...we are seeking His children in this world when we speak of His Gospel of Good News.

Christians are using Christ as a means to propagate their own agendas, and if people of Christ do not change, then problems will continue.  Raping children as a leader of the faith is not doing an action that is supported by Christ.  The Word is supposed to be applied to our lives, but few really want to do that.  They want the benefits of being in Christ, but they don't want to do the work by carrying the cross, toughing it out, and working in peace to make things better.  Doing so...carrying about the environment, about people, etc. is not going against His Word...what was Jesus doing throughout His entire life here?  People need to wake up if they really do believe in him.  He promised that He will come after His Word has been shared to everyone on earth, but He directly tells us that no one knows the day or the hour and that it will come like a thief.  I live my life each day knowing that, but I'm not retreating into a bomb shelter.  I await His return, but I know that I impact this world...why would He have given us gifts if we were supposed to just blow up this earth?

From my own ancestors' experiences in this country and other things I have lived through and experienced, I will never relinquish my faith in him.  Some people believe in science, which does have the 2nd law of thermodynamics...which explains why we must work to keep things going in the right direction or they become disordered... I just feel that I believe in the truth, and I respect your opinion.  I have real reasons to doubt the Word as being fabricated by people from the past, because people have willingly buried black history (like how there's a mass grave of slaves who helped build NYC under the buildings there)... to just the way people are treated in general today, like we (people of this world) are not living beings.  I hope you respect my response to your article and I truly do respect your opinion;  I just wanted to open up the debate and give you constructive criticism, as you have asked for in the article.

The son of man HAS come as a thief in the night

I quote:

Different religions have different names for the "One To Come," but there will not be a different person to fulfill each prophecy.

One son of man, one true witness-servant-messenger of God fulfills all prophecy, and this time he comes like a thief in the night, to take power away from the pretender to the throne who tries to rule the world with all the monetary and military might at his disposal.

Indeed, the son of man comes to take power away from ALL the leaders in the world who have fought for and gained power, and abuse it to further enrich themselves and their corrupt wealthy supporters while many of their citizens are poor, hungry, and homeless.

The prophesied servant-messenger of God also comes to take away myths and false beliefs, and remove the masks and facade behind which evil masquerades.

His work will result in a reformation of both religion and government, and that will take away the ill-gotten financial gains of many of those who now hold enormously excessive wealth, so that it may finally be fairly shared with those who generated the wealth in the first place. For the reformation will ensure the equality of all citizens, who in the future shall govern themselves, and use the common wealth for the common good.

One son of man fulfills all prophecies, for there will not be one person to fulfill the role of the Moshiach of Judaism, another as the Christ of Christianity; another as the Imam Mahdi of Islam, another as the Buddha Maitreya of Buddhism, another as the Kalki Avatar of Hinduism, another as the Saoshyant of Zoroastrianism, and another as Melchizedek the King of Peace.

Those, after all, are just some of the names attributed to the one that various people expect to come in person, because most religious prophetic traditions include the idea that such a one would come. In fact, most people in the world hope and expect that someone with divine authority and/or great wisdom will deliver the judgment and truth that will edify, counsel and unite humanity, and correct those who have misled us, divided us, and caused such horrible conflict and tribulation in the world.

There is but one messenger who represents all those names. But he does not claim to be "the holy one," because there is but One Holy One, One Lord God, the sole "Lord of Hosts," who is God by any other name. For God is the Great Spirit; the eternal, omnipresent but unseen Supreme Consciousness; the Divine Light-Energy-Source of our existence; and the formless, unspeakable primordial "Word," which was in the beginning and is manifested in all form, and is made flesh in all of us. And the true messenger of God explains how and why that is so.

Now that the world is "smaller" and we have ample ways for communications to reach all humanity, it is only common sense that there is but one authorized messenger for God's Holy Spirit of truth. Otherwise, there would be conflict and chaos, as has been and even now is the case.

There is conflict and division because, as was also foretold and prophesied, there are many pretenders claiming to be the Christ/Avatar/Buddha/ Moshiach, etc. There are also many false prophets who claim to know who the expected one will be, and when and where he will come. And there are many religious bigots and hypocrites who claim to know and serve God/Allah, when they in fact do not.

That is why there are so many erroneous beliefs and expectations, and so many people in conflict who claim that God is on their side.

That is why there is only one person who does fulfill all religious prophecies that foretell the coming of a representative or messenger for Divinity, and the universal message he delivers is relevant to all religions.

However, the modern message from the Spirit of truth uses terminology relating to the three Abrahamic religions, and particularly to the Judeo-Christian traditions, because Judaism is the foundation of both Christianity and Islam, which are the two largest religions in the world.

The message is directed mainly at Christians because Christianity is the largest religion in the world. The last time I checked there are 800 million more Christians than there are Muslims in the world. There are 2.1 billion Christians, while there are 1.3 billion Muslims. The next largest population is about 1.1 billion people who are agnostics or atheists. And among the other religions there are 900 million Hindus, 376 million Buddhists, 23 million Sikhs, 14 million Jews, 7 million Baha'is, 4.2 million Jains, 4 million Shintos, and 2.6 million Zoroastrians.

There are, of course, many other lesser known or smaller religions. And, while the numbers may vary according to different sources and change over time, those numbers are basic estimates of how many people adhere to the various religions.

Because Christianity is the largest religion in the world and Islam is the second largest, and because according to their founders (Jesus and Muhammad) they are both supposed to be related to and compatible with Judaism, I use Judeo-Christian prophetic terminology to explain who I am and what my mission is.

Stars and Hosts Trampled

It was Daniel 8:9-14 where Paul read that Michael would descend from heaven.   There he and the rest of the stars and hosts are trampled as humans.  2 of them are also shown in Daniel 7, for the Ancient of Days and one like a son of man, is where the Lamb was quoting about the cloud of heaven.  The cloud of heaven are the TV!

Small addition to criticism

I mentioned something about the idea of conversion...I probably shouldn't have started a semantics argument.  We are converted in the sense that we are accepted into the family of God by receiving the Holy Spirit, which is our second birth.  So...some say "conversion", some say a "rebirth".  The Father stresses that we are new in Christ when we receive the Holy Spirit, so you can say either one really.  I don't want to say anything that is not of the Word.    We as Christians must receive the Holy Spirit because the Holy Spirit tells us what Jesus Christ told us while He was with us by telling us the truth and helping us fulfill our role in Christ.  The Holy Spirit is our Helper since Jesus Christ is sitting at the right side of God the Father now.

Also, we are in conflict with spirits, but nothing will seperate us from Him because we are victorious in Christ.  Our lives depend on God's mercy and not on what we want or do (Romans 9:16), which is why things don't depend on how we want them to go, especially if it is not in accordance to His wil.

I just wanted to revise my statement so it aligns completely with His Word.

How

Long before the Native American Indians ever heard the gospel they had wise men who had heard the voice of god.  I would rather serve their god than the one the CHURCH and STATE have made, from words in a book.

One needs to stop with all of the noise to get to the inform

The noise I mean is religion (preaching) and the information is that we need to live together in harmony & allow for those of us not part of your religion or moral restrictions in an adult freedom of association society to exist unmolested. Consenting adults that is. Something we do not have and as things go, not likely for the near future.

The ones in charge now have their own peculiar parts of the Bible they like and others they ignore. They are very dangerous and want a theocracy here of the most strict kind in parallel to the Islamic Shari'a they so despise. Ironic isn't it? Welcome to the new Dark Ages. Will be bloodier than the the 20th, more weapons to kill more people alive.

Very true. But ...

There is a "noise" of truth, universal truth, common to all religions and common to the wishes of the overwhelming majority of people in the world.

That is, we should have government by the consent of the governed, and it should be of, by and for the people, rather than by the wealthiest few.

We should have equal rights under the law. We should have religious freedom, with freedom FROM religious bigotry and freedom from theocracy.

We should have secular government, with a wall of separation between government and religion, and we should be free to be agnostics and atheists. We should be free, with equal oportunities, and equal rights.

When that "noise" advocating such freedom and rights began in 2002, hardly anyone listend. And even now, even though growing numbers are hearing it and spreading the word, most people either ignore it or reject it.

Why? Because religious bigots think it's blasphemy, and agnostics and atheists think it's merely wishful thinking, or the notions of a crackpot who thinks he knows the true meaning of religious prophecies.

But it's true. And it's here:
