Peggy Noonan, Wall Street Journal columnist and former Reagan speech writer, and Mike Murphy, writer for Time, McCain Advisor (soon to be former?) and contributor to MSNBC were speaking with MSNBC political director Chuck Todd.

Murphy says, "This is not going to work.

Noonan adds, "It's over."

Then, Chuck Todd asks, "is this the most qualified woman they could have picked?"

Noonan replies, "The most qualified? No. I think they went for this, excuse me, political bullshit about narratives. ...Every time the Republicans do that, because that's not where they live and it's not what they're good at, they blow it."

Murphy adds, "You know what's really the worst thing about it? The greatness of McCain is no cynicism.

Chuck finishes his sentence-- "and this is so cynical, and, as you called it, gimmicky. "

Congrats! Now we get Lieberman...

cheif propagandist for the iraq War, the Iran/Terrorist State resolution/Homegrown Terrorist Act/Committee for the Present Danger...

a guy who was such a warmonger that he had to run as an independent.

A guy who said democrats had to support Bush at a time of war or it would weaken the military.

A guy who can't wait to put sites like this on the new HR1955 Watchlist, and all of us who write on it.

hey, yeah, MUCH better than a woman who may or may not have faked a being pregnant to cover for her kid.

And to think, that little tid-bit of a news tip that started it all, came from somewhere... hmmm. I wonder who leaked it? kinda like this audio recording... I wonder where it came from.

"the Greatness of McCain"? So candid. yeah, right.

Out of context

This converstation appears to have been somewhat misinterpreted, at least according to Peggy herself.  There's no doubt that she is a little negative and wary about the choice, but she never said that "McCain was over".

I perceive Noonan to be a very honest and upfront person, and there's no reason to believe she's suddenly trying to cover for herself.  I have a feeling she may be a little more positive after having seen Palin's speech, but ..... just a gut guess.

The frowns and scowls on the faces of the (mostly) Democrats in the media are an excellent barometer as to how much they fear she may have done well.  They wouldn't have been able to contain their grinning glee had she gotten lost and/or looked scared and timid.

Don't count on it

...based on what I have seen yesterday evening, this statement is overly optimistic: Palin was good, her speech meticulously crafted to appeal to voters' feelings, not to their brain, the special needs baby was on display, the whole family was there...

And one thing was made crystal clear: Palin can fight, even if it's with somebody elses's words; she tore into Obama like a starving lioness. The fact that a few days before, BO tried to protect her family (''back off'') against Democratic attacks apparently did not soften her up, what a surprise.

What do you call someone who tries to protect  people who kick his butt repeatedly? A saint, a dreamer, a fool? A wimp maybe? I dislike McCain intensely but nobody, even his adversaries, can call him a wimp, and Sarah Palin is no shy violet either. Americans like their leaders strong and red blooded and I have the feeling that the wimp factor is going to play a big role in this election, again...

Obama and his team still don't get it: they still go by the Queensberry rules, whereas Republicans are street fighters whose only rule is to win at all costs,  they think elections are won on rationality, real political issues and competence while most voters make up their mind on symbols, images, irrational likes and dislikes, fears, bogus issues and character.

It's hard to believe that with two wars, the economic situation, the crisis with Russia, Iran etc, voters could be manipulated into thinking that the old pro-choice/pro-life debate should be at the center of the campaign, but that's exactly what's happpening now, thanks to  the Republicans' artful deception. They are not only masters of slander and lies, they are also proficient in smoke screens and political distraction. Yes, Palin is grotesquely underqualified but this, by itself, is not enough to get BO elected: keeping in mind that Republicans have the knack to turn their worst failures into success, while Dems excel at snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, such claims as above are wildly premature.
