*Longest Walk 2 Participants Violently Attacked by Columbus Ohio Police **

**Indigenous Peoples Challenge Chief of Police to Act with Compassion and Professionalism*

COLUMBUS, OHIO- On Monday, June 2, 2008 after trekking over 2400 miles on foot, participants of the Northern Route of The Longest Walk 2, were violently attacked by Columbus Ohio police as men, women and children walked through the town carrying sacred prayer staffs and the message "All Life is Sacred". Without communicating with the Ohio Department of Transportation, who were notified of The Longest Walk passing through Columbus, Ohio, city police swiftly and forcefully arrived with squad cars and arrest wagons and began assaulting the peaceful walkers.

Eight police cars surrounded the walkers as the group walked into the parking lane and up onto the sidewalk of Main Street. A police officer approached a vehicle providing support to walkers, reached into the window and grabbed the steering wheel. The police officer yelled at the young woman driving a carload of young children and threatened to place the children in Child Protective Services.

As dozens of police hastily approached the walkers, Michael Lane (Menominee) was targeted by police with a taser, which was held three feet away from Lane's head in front of his wife and young daughter.

Taser Guns are supposed to be aimed away from the head and towards major muscle groups.

Luv the Mezenger, who acted as road safety for the walkers, was physically assaulted and thrown to the ground and handcuffed. Luv has been a peacekeeper on the walk since departing on February 11th and walked over a stretch of the Sierra Nevada Mountains on snowshoes.

Michael Lane, a veteran walker from the 1978 Longest walk arrived on the walk with his wife, Sharon Heta, Tuhoe (Maori Tribal Nation), and their children from New Zealand approximately two months ago.

Lane, who holds a law degree from the Arizona State University, stated the worst part of being targeted by a police officer with a taser was that it terrified his young daughter who was unaware that it was a taser gun being held to their father's head – she only knew that a gun was being pointed at her father's head. This violent action caused severe emotional distress for the women and children that were witness to these events.

Across the continent, police-induced deaths from tasers have dramatically increased from overzealous police brutality. Luv suffered minor injuries from the police attack. Police made no arrests.

As the walkers have endured the natural elements, they have walked through the snow, extreme rain,straight-line winds, blazing heat, lightning storms and near misses by tornadoes. Often tired, hungry, thirsty and sore, they have been peacefully accepted into Native and Non-Native communities, and this is the first experience of extreme police harassment.

Columbus Police give themselves a black eye

As a resident of Columbus, I am ashamed of our police behavior. I want to know who gave the orders threatening to use tasers on a group of peaceful men women and children walking through Columbus to make a simple point. One young man was severely beaten in this unprovoked attack. Who gave the orders? What was the objective? I cannot and will not let this rest until I know. This behavior is disgraceful and I am ashamed of the Columbus Police for their reckless and uncalled for use of force. Is this what the citizens of Columbus should expect from the Columbus Police the next time there is a peaceful protest, let alone a peace walk? What primitive neandrathal monsters do we have calling the shots down at CPD anyway?

longest walk

Police forces are managed similarly to  armies. The officers are supposed to be well trained and well disciplined. If they are not, as it seems in this case, then it heralds a problem at the top. Any investigation of this incident has got to start at the chief's desk. This type of perverse behaviour on the part of his force strongly suggests lack of authority and lack of direction from his office. Perhaps a new chief should be hired. You might find that the next police chief will have a much more disciplined force because he will know what will happen to him if he doesn't.

I am a senior, who has lived a full and diverse life. I have blessed the world with three children.I have just one grandchild. My desire is to see that these family members will have a safe world in which to live. That desire seems to be harder to accomplish as I witness the corporate world's dream of making slaves of all the citizens of the world.
I am against the rich getting richer on the backs of the poor, who are poor because of the slack health and education systems. The children who...

There, but by the Grace

go all of us! The USA, Canadian, and Mexican Governments have given Local Police departments  much larger scope and cover to do as they please, over whom and with what strength impossed.  The USA Patriot Act, and Homeland Security gives these local police the "bravery" to go to this extreme with the "Law" on their side.

I am hoping with the change of Administration, that these terrible practises will end. I also hope that Administration has the "cahones" to change all the  depreciations to the Bill of Rights, and  Articles of the Constitution of the United States of America  that this standing Administration have "bastardized" for their own pleasure.

I am not saying a young and inexperienced President could not handle all that is ahead of him, I question the solidarity of the rest of the New Administration  to stand by him and really get your country back on track as a World Leader that cares for it's people first.

Having said that, the same goes for the  (R) candidate that lives for himself instead of his country, and "speaks with forked tongue" and out of "both sides of his mouth" flip flopping on every subject he is questioned on.

I can only see your Country becoming a "free world" again under the stewardship of the other (R) that is also running and being for the most part ignored. Under his care and devotion for the Constitution and Bill of Rights the United States of America can again become a respected country.

Therefore the Aboriginals, First Nations, African Americans, and all the peoples of the world who have come to your shores looking for freedom will see their rights put on the front burner. You know what needs to be done, do it.

We Need Not-Peaceful Walkers

...if these monsters are going to respond like this to peaceful protesters (and there is evidence that similar behavior was exhibited in Kent), we need to accept the fact that they are not yet sick of war.  What a Son asks from the Father, he will receive.

Until both sides are sick of war, there will be war.  There is no point in martyring one's self, much less before a beast.

Bless them in peace and leave them to their fate.  Wish for them what you would have for your self.

Until they learn that they make war against their own nightmares only, misery and suffering will rain down upon them.  Do not share their misery and make drama and victimhood appear real.  Bless them and move forward.
