Many think that Darwin was the first major teacher of evolution through his infamous Origin of Species. He is not. As Underhill writes regarding the Christian mystics, Christ is seen as the evolutionary potential of humankind in the Christian tradition. It doesn't matter if you are Jew, Hindu, Buddhist, Muslim or Pagan, Christ is a potential within you just as Buddha is a potential inherent in all creatures. Indeed, in studying the Christian mystics to the Buddhist quest for Nirvana and the unfolding of Buddhahood, we would find a common goal that we are working towards. Names like Buddha and Christ are relative to culture, yet the potential inherent in each of us is not so relative.
On 11/11/11, I read through some commentary regarding the end of the world. The writers were sure that some major catastrophic event was going to happen. It is now 11/15/11, and I am writing this article. I've seen other predictions like this come and go. The fact is that no one has any idea if or when the world will literally end. Besides, the end of the world in my eyes is nothing less than a beginning. The seeds for that beginning are within each one of us. Indeed, they are inherent in all of Nature. But, for an egg to become a fetus, it must die to being an egg. If it stays stuck in remaining an egg, it's not going to become a human being or any other animal.
The end of time is a state of awareness that we can all tap into. You do it every night when you go to sleep. Dreams are like clouds upon an infinitely deep state that you ultimately go into called deep sleep. You can also tap into this area of consciousness through meditative practices such as Nidra Yoga. Nidra Yoga is about entering a state of deep sleep while you are fully awake.
Entering this state takes a lot of practice. Unfortunately, because of our conditioning in idealism (idea-lism), it is hard for us to get past our thoughts.
Being empty of mind and of time is analogous to winter. It is a time of barrenness. It is no accident that the celebration of the virgin birth is close to the winter solstice which is the point that the length of day is at its shortest. At this point the birth begins. There is now a movement towards the longer days of summer. In this death, buried deep beneath the snow, is the seed for the birth of new life. Winter is the mother of spring and summer. Just so, emptiness of mind could be the seed for a new way of life for the human race.
The implications to this are huge. By letting go to what we think the world is or should be, we can be the parents to a new world. When we let go and become empty, we can tap into a place where we are infinitely pregnant with potential. It is then we give birth. To make this more comprehensible, the process is much like the phrase, "it just came out of the blue" when a thought appears unsolicited in our minds.
Letting go is our only way of engaging in this birth. But we have a proverbial monster that is attempting to keep us from this task. That monster's cells are within our self, as our conditioning, as well as externally in the culture. Yes, the conditioning stems from our family of origin, the corporations we work for, the government bureaucrats that tax us for reduced services, and the standardized education centers geared towards preparing children for corporate slavery.
Just as the Romans went after Jesus and Mary, they will come after you and what you discover when you let go of your conditioning and tap into what lies hidden in your depths. Yet, getting past this fear is imperative.
