In Defense of Robert Wexler

My review of Congressman Robert Wexler's book includes plenty of criticism of him. I would add my extremely negative view of the new get-tough-on-the-nonexistent-threat-from-Iran bill that he's cosponsored. But this attack on him is utter nonsense.

Was Wexler late in coming to impeachment? Of course, he was. But not as late as many other Congress members, and not as late as many more who we hope will still come around. We want to welcome them with open arms, not attacks for showing up tardy.

Is there more that Wexler could do for impeachment? Of course, there is. But he has already taken the almost unheard of step of publicly whipping his colleagues and committee chairman. He has uniquely put his voice in the media. He has uniquely assigned both congressional staff and campaign staff to work on the issue, and to work in cooperation with grassroots groups.

While Congressman Dennis Kucinich has taken the lead, as Wexler openly acknowledges and praises, Wexler has taken steps that nobody else has taken and done more for impeachment than anyone in Congress other than Kucinich.

Does Wexler hope to generate support for his election campaigns and sell copies of his book? Does he hope to generate some fame for himself, maybe even take pleasure in some talk of a vice-presidential nomination? Maybe even raise some money to pay the salaries of all the staffers he - and NO OTHER MEMBER OF CONGRESS - has working on impeachment?

Well, what could be better? What would indicate more life in our tattered democracy? Electing saints who cared nothing for public opinion would be the death of a democracy. Electing anti-politicians who didn't want to compete is by definition not possible. The wonderful thing about Wexler is that, even compared to most politicians, he's willing to make a lot of noise for positions actually held by his constituents. Sure, he's attracting attention to himself - but for exactly what we want him to attract attention to himself.

Already a quarter millenium back, as democracy was being born, David Hume pointed out that there is very little harm, if any, and often much good, in people taking pride in their good behavior. Would we prefer they did the right thing but with indifference to people around them? Or did the right thing but with shame and secrecy? Or did the wrong thing?

Let's grow up, here. I want to see every congress member who claims to take a position to do more than cosponsor a resolution. I want them to make it a focus of their next campaign. I want them to write a book about it. I want that book to be a best seller. I want them to get on TV and talk about it endlessly. I want them to pressure their colleagues to get on board. Why wouldn't I?

Now, perhaps I'm corrupt as well. Perhaps AfterDowningStreet and Democrats.com hope to build their membership and run ads for Wexler's book and run ads from other poor chumps attracted by all the work we do to try to make impeachment happen, while meanwhile I'm secretly traveling around the country giving speeches promoting impeachment, and I make a living at it, and I might write a book someday and want people to buy my book too.

But I hardly see the harm in putting ourselves out for impeachment. I think the Congress member who just signs a resolution and then goes out and tells everyone it's only for show and not really possible can be thanked for doing something more than most and yet can also be upbraided for hypocrisy and counterproductive actions. But the member of Congress who publicly and privately devotes endless hours to pushing for impeachment as a real possibility? We're going to condemn him because he's running for reelection and selling a book? That's where you lose me.

And that's where you'll have to completely condemn every single member of Congress. Kucinich, too, sends people to his campaign website. His website, too, asks for money and Email addresses. And he should do that, and I would complain if he didn't. Our job is not to complain that he's promoting himself. Our job is to ask even him, as our leader in Congress, to do more, and to ask everyone else in Congress to catch up to him. And if he writes another book, our job is to make it a bestseller - and maybe even read it, and maybe even learn something.

This is an unfair assesment of my position David...

I did not "...condemn him because he's running for reelection and selling a book?".

I have chatted with several people already who were on that "conference call" just like I was, for the entire duration of it.

And all of them agreed that it was suspicious at best, and a marketing campaign at worst.

His choice to have his "Impeachment Conference Call" on the same day as the release of his book was quite obvious to me.

In and of itself, it is not reason to doubt his sincerity.

Combined with the "petition that isn't a petition" as well as his late signing of the Kucinich bill to impeach Cheney (he signed on just 12 days ago) as well as his early signing onto the "Attack Iran Bill" which you yourself noted...

... all lead to a very grim (and one might say, obvious) conclusion.

But he has very specifically used the issue of impeachment and the desire that many Americans have to see impeachment happen, to raise money.

He linked his "petition" to a donate site for his campaign; All of his "important impeachment update" emails have that same Donate link.

And now, his Impeachment conference call just happens to take place on the same day his book comes out.

That, David, is a clear pattern. It is not me "condemn(ing) him because he's running for reelection and selling a book?". That is an unfair over-simplification of my argument.

Besides, did you listen in on the call last night? I don't see you mentioning that too much in your defense of mr. Wexler.

I did listen to all of it. And I stand by my conclusion in the article. Every 8-9 minutes some "questioner" asked about his book, one even asking 'when was it published" so he could talk about the release. That continued for the first 40 minutes or so, then after that, just like clockwork, the same thing happened with people prodding him for how they can donate to his re-election campaign.

I am not the only one who sensed a bit of 'staging" in these questions. In fact, from what I can gather, there are others who have also expressed a distain for his linking the "petition" to his Donate and Contribute site.

Now he called me last night, David, with this "Impeachment Town Hall Conference Call" i didn't call him.

And he used the info I had to include when I signed his impeachment "petition".

And you are telling us anything we didn't already know, David, when you mention you get paid for this.

You want to know the difference? he makes about a 160 thousand a year in tax-payer money to do what he does. It's his job, remember? This is yours.

Why don't you think I mentioned this before? Why don't you think anyone holds your paycheck against you? That phone call last night was out of line. it was. And if you didn't listen to it, I would ask you to find it, before going after me.

(and by the way, we pay his staffers. you can easily check that on the House website, they list all the salaries of his staff, right there)

"and NO OTHER MEMBER OF CONGRESS - has working on impeachment?"

really? no other member of Congress are working on Impeachment? Really David? Is that true?

This is a very unfair assesment of my position David. It is grossly oversimplified and unfairly implies an attack on people getting paid for their hard work in this movement which i do not make.

I never imply that people shouldn't be paid for their hard work pressing for impeachment. It is his use of the "petition list" and the timing of the conference call to coincide with the release of his book that I question.

Plus, you didn't even mention whether or not you even listened in on the impeachment conference call that prompted the entire thing. how can you draw a conclusion about the situation, if you didn't hear the call?

IT'S ALL ABOUT DIRECTION

Fabulous assessment, David, thank you. We attract more bees and politicians with honey than vinegar, and in these times, it is good to have all the help we can get. Do some politicians move slowly, as Creighton claims? Of course. But as Kahlil Gibran said, "Even he who limps, goes not backward." With one foot in front of the other - even taking baby steps - we will eventually bring our country into her full and shining glory! And the fewer roadblocks that are set up by progressives who denigrate the process because it is "too little, too late," the faster we will get there.

'U-turn' versus 'seeing sense'

Survival is not a bad thing to desire - we all do it. If you are going to turn and bite the hand that somewhere in the background feeds you, then you have to make sure you can still eat - maybe this is his gain and maybe it should matter less to us than the fact that he is raising an issue that sorely needs to be raised.

If we were scrutinised every time we changed our minds, discovered something new, had a realisation, connected the dots, realised we were lied to etc. - then that would be a lot of scrutinisation. Just because a politician changes his mind, doesn't mean he is up to something (though it is natural that we, the abused voters think so).

I know when I hear on the news that the government or a minister has made a u-turn that they make it sound like a weakness - why isn't it phrased to say something like "after further consideration and examination" or "after listening to the public who put us in power" - that these are what led to the reappraisal of a formerly held position or view?

A positive view is hard to find in a murky world... but it is long overdue.

Great writing and sound views as always David, thanks.

 Namaste,
Tina Louise

I don't understand any of this ...

Condemnation

I condemn him because he does whatever AIPAC wants. I condemn him for having voted to authorize the invasion of Iraq. I condemn him for voting for the USA Patriot Act. I'm glad he supports impeachment but on most issues he has a poor voting record.

Praise for Robert Wexler

I signed up for (I forget how; probably on this Site) and get emails from Robert Wexler. Kucinich’s name and Wexler’s are the only names I am familiar with concerning impeachment activity in Congress. I am a Massachusetts resident and am so identified to him, so he knows I am not a voter in his district. In my opinion, he should be praised for that level of effort and promotion of his activities concerning impeachment.
