I celebrate today a constitution that George W Bush has called " Just a gaddamned piece of paper " but is, in reality, the very life blood and moral fabric of our badly wounded Republic ~ where 41% of Americans do not believe this is a country with liberty and justice for all : Allen L Roland The Declaration of Independence, the document signed by John Hancock 232 years ago today, boldly proclaims: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness " Their declaration began by asserting that certain truths were self-evident. Today, 85% of American adults agree with the first “self-evident” truth ~ that all men are created equal. Ninety-one percent (91%) agree with the second of those truths ~ that we are all are endowed by our Creator with certain unalienable rights including Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. However, (41%) do not believe this is a country with liberty and justice for all. ( Rasmussen Polls ) In the Bush/Cheney world, all men are not created equal and nowhere is this more evident than the terrible human destruction we have wrought on the people of Iraq ~ all under the false banner of spreading Democracy and the so called ' War on Terror ' which has become a War of Terror. At the 1947 Nuremberg trials, the principles of international law identified by the tribunal and subsequently accepted unanimously by the General Assembly of the United Nations included that the planning, preparation or initiation of a war contrary to the terms of an international treaty was "a crime against peace". The tribunal further stated "that to initiate a war of aggression... is not only an international crime, it is the supreme international crime". Here is the big bleak picture of America's supreme International crime in Iraq ~ over 1.5 million killed, 4 million refugees inside Iraq, 3 million outside Iraq, 75% unemployed, cancer rates increased 20,000% since 2003, no medical system, no functioning economy, prostitution is rampant and Iraq has the highest number of women turned prostitutes more than any country that experience war, US detains over 28,000 Iraqis kids below age 18, and over 110,000 adults, US and Shiites divided Baghdad with concrete walls, electricity is available every 4-6 days, no clean water, gasoline is scarce, and the killers still kill and no one knows who is killing who except of course the Americans ... http://www.dissidentvoice.org/2008/06/getting-away-with-the-supreme-international-crime/ As Rosa Parks, LA Times, writes yesterday ~ Standing up for our constitutional rights is in the best tradition of our founding fathers ~ not a sign of weakness. " The Constitution is no "suicide pact," but the people who founded this nation risked war, prison and death for the sake of unalienable human rights. Their values guided us through good times and bad, through the Civil War, two world wars and the Cold War.
