The House Judiciary Committee today, Friday, July 25th, will put impeachment squarely back "on the table" and restored to its prominent place in our Constitution.

Elliott Adams, President of Veterans for Peace, and a descendant of American revolutionary Sam Adams, will deliver this prepared testimony, in which, if his 5 minutes allow him to reach his conclusion, he will say:

"For us veterans, when our time came, we volunteered our very lives for this republic; for the principle of freedom for all, for equal opportunity for all, to defend the Constitution and the principles embodied in the Declaration of Independence, and to guarantee the opportunity for life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Now, Congressmen, it is your time, and I hear there is not enough time! Now is your time, and I hear it will not be good for one party or the other party! Now is your time, and I hear there is not enough political will around you! When our founding fathers signed the Declaration of Independence they were not worried about political will, or how much time there was, or about any parties' political future, they were just worried they were going to be hanged by the neck. But they did what was right. Now it is your time to standup. Einstein said – 'The world is a dangerous place, not because of those who do evil, but because of those who look on and do nothing.'"

Bruce Fein, Associate Deputy Attorney General, 1981-82, and Chairman of the American Freedom Agenda, will deliver this prepared testimony, which begins thus:

"If President George W. Bush had knocked to enter the constitutional convention in Philadelphia in 1787, presiding convention president George Washington would have denied him admission. Thereby hangs an alarming tale. The executive branch has vandalized the Constitution every bit as much [sic] the barbarians vandalized Rome in 410 AD. The executive branch has destroyed the Constitution's time-honored checks and balances and raced the nation perilously close to executive despotism. The executive branch rejects the basic philosophical tenets of the United States. It does not accept that America was conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that sovereignty in a republican form of government lies with the people; that there are no vassals or serfs in the Constitution's landscape; that every man or woman is a king or queen but no one wears a crown; and, that the rule of law is the nation's civic religion. The Founding Fathers fashioned impeachment as a remedy for attacks against the constitutional order."

The first panel Friday morning will include Congressman Dennis Kucinich making a case for impeachment based on the articles of impeachment he has drafted against Cheney and Bush. Also on the first panel will be Republican Congressman Walter Jones who has sought to end the funding of the occupation of Iraq, and who has expressed support for former prosecutor Vincent Bugliosi's proposal to prosecute former President George W. Bush, once out of office, for murder. Congressman Maurice Hinchey, a supporter of impeachment, is also on the panel. The last witness is Congressman Brad Miller, but as the saying goes, "Three out of four ain't bad." And we've been mercifully spared Congresswoman Jane Harman, who at one point was scheduled to testify.

The second of two planned panels is even better, and includes Adams, Fein, Bugliosi, and six other witnesses. One of them, Elizabeth Holtzman, Former Representative from New York, will speak very persuasively for impeachment. Ross C. “Rocky” Anderson, Founder and President, High Roads for Human Rights, and the former Mayor of Salt Lake City, is likely to speak in support of impeachment too, while also supporting other alleged remedies. One chronicler of Bush and Cheney crimes who in recent months has opposed impeachment is John Dean; he had been scheduled to appear but did not make the final cut. However, there are four witnesses on the second panel who may not help the cause of impeachment. Frederick A. O. Schwarz, Jr., Senior Counsel, Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law, is a supporter of restoring the rule of law, but whether he'll advocate restoration of the rule of the Constitution we shall see. The other three almost certainly will not. They are: Bob Barr, Former Representative from Georgia, 2008 Libertarian Nominee for President; Stephen Presser, Raoul Berger Professor of Legal History, Northwestern University School of Law; and Jeremy A. Rabkin, Professor of Law, George Mason University School of Law.

The big unknown is which members of the House Judiciary Committee, which has 40 members, will show up for a Friday hearing. A number of Republicans have already left town, and some of the most pro-impeachment Democrats have committed to being present. Watch Robert Wexler, Tammy Baldwin, and Sheila Jackson-Lee for the most likely statements in support of beginning a true impeachment hearing.

Some of the witnesses in the past couple of days had expressed frustration with congressional rules forbidding accusations against the president, rules deriving from prohibitions on speaking ill of the king of England. But witnesses have been able to work around those rules by referring to "the executive branch" and other similar locutions rather than "the president" or "the vice president." While Chairman John Conyers almost certainly has every intention of preventing the commencement of a real impeachment hearing, he and his staff appear to have opened this one up significantly to the obvious and overdocumented case for impeachment. Our hope lies in the likelihood that Conyers' calculation is wrong when he supposes that Democrats will benefit from publicizing the case for impeachment and not suffer for failing to pursue it. If the public makes clear its demand for action, not just talk, the door that is cracking open may be very difficult to shut. "Stop the preaching and start impeaching" is a cheer that may be heard at a gathering of impeachment activists outside the Rayburn Building immediately following the hearing.

The day before the hearing, some of those impeachment advocates gathered at the National Press Club, including myself, Ray McGovern, Bruce Fein, Cindy Sheehan, Cynthia Papermaster, and Crystal Kim. Videos of what they had to say, and their questions and answers with the media, are posted at http://youtube.com/afterdowningstreet

What is wrong with the submission petition?

No matter what message I included, I received a message that "it was illegal." WTF??? I had to send it with no message included, becuse anything I said got the above message. My message was exactly 250 words, and then I tried shorter messages, they all received the same warning, that what I was sending was "illegal." Below is the message I attempted to send. What is illegal about that???

Our economy is crashing and people are having a hard time feeding their families and gas in their cars just to get to work. Those on fixed-incomes are rapidly being victimized by a Presidency that only favors the wealthy and corporations. The President doesn't answer to Congress, won't allow anyone in his administration to testify before Congress, and generally has spit on our Constitution, Bill of Rights, and the rule of law. It is the duty of, not the prerogative of Congress to impeach when a President or VP refuses to honor our own or international law. We are in danger of losing our freedom and liberty - and only impeachment will send a message to the next President that he must work within the parameters of the law - not make up his own, or break every law he can and then be treated like he was anything less than a traitor or criminal. Impeaching these criminals will bolster the value of the dollar and lower oil prices, not to mention help to bring the US back to our constitutional values. It is imperative that we stand up for our constitution and the rule of law. To do less is un-American and flies in the face of everything that our constitution and rule of law embodies. Those that do not support impeachment become enablers of a criminal Presidency – and Pelosi and Conyers should both be booted out of Congress if they continue to thwart our own laws and constitution.

The only thing that I can see that is "illegal" is the actions of the President and Vice-President, both of whom are criminals and should be impeached under the rule of law and our constitution.

Only a Threat To Un-Elect House Dems Will cause Impeachment

ALL SHOULD BE AWARE that the House Democrats did not allow this preliminary Impeachment Hearing Today
Out Of The Goodness Of Their Hearts or Because of Any Particular Group's Lobbying.

There is only one dynamic that has changed recently.

The Democrats are afraid of massive voter retribution in the November Election. They are afraid of losing their jobs and their power, and the perks that go with it.

The Voters have recently and loudly told the House Democrats that we are sick and tired of their stonewalling on holding Bush and Cheney accountable.

After My Democrats took over, the polls show that Congress's positive rating dropped to the single digits, the lowest in history. The refusal of the House Democrats to stop the Iraq War and Impeach is unforgiveable. We put you in office and if you do not hold Full Impeachment Hearings prior to the Election we will un-elect you.

In Colorado We Democrats, Independents, Republicans and others are currently doing negative campaigning against all incumbent House/Senate Candidates who have refused to support and even discuss impeachment.

If the House Democrats do not immediately announce the date of the first full impeachment hearing scheduled prior to the election, we will greatly increase our negative campaigning.

Your job is yours to lose. You have our support only if you hold serious full impeachment hearings before the election.

Congress Approval ratings finally wake em up

I agree - only if we threaten to un-elect all incumbent Democrats and Republicans for deriliction of duty will we start getting their attention.

Let's start by defeating Nancy Pelosi - she has played the biggest role by not allowing us to hear the voice of the people.

Lets petition Congress to proceed with hearings right now.

Don't Hold Your Breath

This is but another "thumb in the eye" of the American people.  It is another example of the crimes that are being perpetrated out in the open in order to show the people we are meaningless.

Expect nothing to come of this hearing.  We should actually hold  a poll on how these hearings will be spun.

The impeachment Hearing that Never Had a Chance

I was holding my breath hoping that the Democrats were finally going to own-up to their oaths of office and impeach President Bush. It was almost a waste of time, and now what we know occurred is disgusting and an affront to the American people. BuzzFlash ran a brilliant Op-Ed on the non-impeachment hearings and their analysis, in my opinion, is dead-on! It's an article that is worth reading for all that are wondering why our Congress refuses to impeach the worst President in American history. Below are excerpts, however, I suggest a full read of the Op-Ed, as it explains exactly why the Democrats won't impeach - and yes, they should all lose their jobs for betraying the American people. (Those that refuse to back impeachment.)

The Impeachment Hearing That Wasn't

It has been suggested that Pelosi took impeachment off the table to avoid being entangled in legal issues.

A Washington Post article from December of last year revealed that party leadership such as Pelosi had been briefed by the Bush Administration early on regarding torture policies, including waterboarding, as well as other controversial subjects. Journalists and lawmakers alike have suggested that the Democratic Party's reluctance to hold impeachment hearings relates to these closed meetings. They have suggested that Pelosi and others could be held legally responsible for their reticence on harsh interrogation techniques.

When such Bush Administration wrongdoings are brought up publicly, Republican lawmakers often say that since the Congressional leaders known as the Gang of Eight did not express concern at the closed hearings that they are complicit in the condoning of torture, an opinion mentioned again at today's hearings.

http://www.buzzflash.com/articles/alerts/438

I am utterly disgusted that his Highness, King Bush, was not allowed to be mentioned in any "personal abuse, innuendo, or ridicule of the president is not permitted. . . Any suggestion of mendacity is out of order." We can thank John Conyers for that, which also has the fingerprints of Nancy "The Enabler" Pelosi all over it. The Democratic process is being subverted because of the statement(s) made above, and I sincerely, way down in my heart, believe those allegations to be true.

There's no question that Nancy Pelosi is the worst Speaker of The House in Democratic history, and if Bush is prosecuted after the elections and not pardoned by Obama - Nancy Pelosi should be prosecuted as well for refusing to acknowledge that we were torturing our prisoners when she was first advised in secrecy of that fact.  The President may order confidentiality on an issue, but when it's in direct conflict with our constitution, the rule of law, and international law, the claim of confidentiality is moot when Congressmen/women knew full well that we were breaking our own as well as international laws.

I readily admit that I do not know very much about Barack Obama, and for all I know, he may be a good man with the very best of intentions, however, if Bush and Cheney are not impeached, Obama will walk into an Imperial Presidency - and one thing we do know throughout history is that absolute power corrupts! It is self-defeating to allow another President to be elected without first making a statement, via impeachment, that no one is above the law - and that should go double for the President of The United States! The President is the "gatekeeper" of the constitution and the rule of law; he is charged via his inauguration oath "to defend and uphold the constitution of The United States." Bush has failed miserably in that endeavor, and for that fact, even if all others were thrown out - deserves to be impeached and prosecuted for refusing to uphold his Presidential oath.

As an American citizen I am outraged that Pelosi, Conyers, and Hoyer are acting as criminal enablers and the rest of the Congress is following like sheep while our economy is tanking and Middle-class America is being destroyed. High crimes and misdemeanors doesn't even scratch the surface of the Bush Presidency, and I sincerely hope that I live to see the day when those who have enabled this criminal administration are called upon, under oath, to explain why they failed to uphold their oaths of office, and even though I'm not a very religious individual, I am praying that if there is a God, he will punish those who have betrayed their own country and violated the trust of an entire nation.

This may sound like a rant, but is an expression of my frustration and utter despair that so few in our Congress are willing to stand-up for our constitution, the Bill of Rights, the rule of law, and international laws of which the US is a signatory. All of us should be outraged, and we should express that outrage to our local editors, politicians, and every member of Congress via email, phone calls and faxes. Congress should be inundated with day after day of unrelenting calls and emails demanding impeachment, otherwise, we will elect another king rather than a President.
