Miss Alabama's memorable footwear by Danny Barrett, Precious Memories Media

Background: Gary White was a county commissioner in Jefferson County, Alabama. Good friends with Les Siegelman, he introduced Les's brother, [former] Alabama Governor Don Siegelman to Richard Scrushy, a local Republican businessman. Because of this, White became inextricably intertwined with Siegelman, who was one of the biggest targets of the Rove-directed, heavily politicized Department of Justice [DOJ].

Scrushy and Siegelman were later indicted and convicted on charges stemming from that relationship. According to affidavits provided by Gary [and Judy, who was also in the room] White was asked to perjure himself before a Grand Jury in order to make the case against Siegelman and Scrushy. White refused and the very next day, the DOJ started delivering subpoenas to build a case against him. White is serving ten years and has been moved most recently to Federal Prison in Arkansas. [BOP is Bureau of Prisons.]. Judy and I spoke earlier this week.

This is installment #24. [links to entire series at end of article.]

My guest today is frequent OpEdNews contributor, Judy White. Welcome back to OpEdNews, Judy.

JB: What's new with you and Gary these days?

JW: Soooo much!  After visiting Gary last Sunday, I had to file new Internal Affairs complaints against prison employees!  Not that that's anything new, but for the most bizarre reason.

JB: What do you mean?

JW: The BOPers are certifiable HATERS, but who knew they could hate our beloved Crimson Tide?

JB: You're referring to the famed University of Alabama football team, of course.

JW: Yes.  I've shared with you the interesting manner in which these Arkansas prison employees dress.  Unlike anywhere else we've ever been - too many prisons - these prison employees don't wear professional uniforms.  They wear blue jeans and t-shirts and baseball caps - normal street clothes.  One named Bradshaw, in particular, had normally worn a floppy fishing hat, but with the arrival of football season, he has exchanged it for a baseball cap with the Arkansas Razorbacks logo.

JB: Okay. You've set the stage beautifully. What happened that's set you off?

JW: When I visited last weekend, ahead of me in line was a woman wearing a beautiful t-shirt, crimson with a white "A" and "Alabama" on it.  ROLL TIDE!  When she was handed her form upon entry, Blunt (and later Broadway) told her she would not be allowed to visit wearing it, stating "athletic attire" is prohibited.  She was forced to turn her Alabama shirt inside out in order to visit!  So sad.

JB: Isn't that rather hypocritical on the part of the prison staff?
