What are we doing in Afghanistan?

William Pfaff in the Truthdig Newsletter of February 18th, 2009 asks some important questions about our activities in Central Asia:

1. ] Exactly what do we think we are doing in Afghanistan and Pakistan?

2.]Are we there to liberalize their forms of religious observance or conduct a war over theology, or establish permanent NATO bases there or are we searching for Osama bin Laden?

It seems we are doing all of these things at the same time. But why?

We need to have the answers to these questions now. What is Secretary of State Clinton doing to clarify the situation there and answer these questions?
