On Ultra Nationalists: When You Slow-Dance with the Devil, You Can't See His Face

"If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it's a duck."

If you are willing to eat for, drink for, give speeches for, sanction nations for, stand up in the UN for, pass legislation for, give money to, protest for, or otherwise support Ultra Nationalists, its can only be because you are an Ultra Nationalist yourself. When John McCain first addressed the protesters at Maidan, the look of awe on his face was impossible to miss. This was his baby. He was at home. He told us as much: "We are all Ukrainians." Mr. McCain is serious. We are all Nazis.

Mr. McCain doesn't know the difference between Republicans and Nazis, because Far Right Republicans became Nazis, and Nazis are Republicans in the US. It is the same with the Neo-Liberals and Democrats. Democratic Representative Chris Murphy expressed the same sentiments as McCain for the same reasons.

That's the reason the news in the US is so filtered. If the media and the US government were to reveal what is really happening in Ukraine, they would at the same time also be admitting what they have become.

If you aren't an Ultra Nationalist, it's time to rein in those that are.

On March 6, 2014 President Obama issued the Executive Order to sanction people that he thinks contribute to the violation of Ukrainian territorial sovereignty or legitimacy. His basis for this is that the situation in Ukraine constitutes an extraordinary threat to US national security and foreign policy. For the US itself, President Obama declared a national emergency you are probably unaware of. When I read the executive order, the hair on the back of my neck stood up.

If you combine Section 1, parts iv and v, and Section 4(a) and Section 6(c), the order is very clear: Any person, including US citizens that are only writing about the Ukrainian Revolution, or government, who represent Bandera history, philosophy, and politics in any light other than favorable to the new Bandera-led Ukrainian government, is no better than Anwar Awlaki.

When we have such an executive order, and the President is trying to attack the financial system of a country like Russia, how far can we be from war? President Obama has pulled out all the stops, and is willfully backing the Ultra Nationalists in Ukraine with the full authority and reputation of the United States.

Awlaki, a US citizen once dined at the White House, was later "droned" instead of given a day in court, as was his 16-year-old son who went to find his body. He was droned, essentially, for being annoying. We used to try people for the most grievous crimes in court.

It's not every day you wake up realizing you may or may not have made every bad list the US government has. My wife and I discussed this all the way through my own writing about the Maidan coup, but that doesn't mitigate the shock factor in the Executive Order.

Read that Order. You'll find that even writing something at odds with the President's version of reality is a criminal offense when it comes to Ukraine. You'll also find it includes a "no recourse" clause.

What I Feel

Taken literally, the Executive Order means my country has walked away from me. I feel like a gnat that's realized there's a flyswatter in the room. But I can't change that. Only you can.

The people in southeast Ukraine wait, and every day the new government issues statements, policies, or laws that all lead to the same reality. Yulia Timoshenko wasn't lying in that phone call. The only way the new government will make peace is to destroy anyone who disagrees with them.

Doing right in the world used to be the highest American value. It was what we were known for. But it's a value only because it has a cost. It doesn't take tremendous courage to express your opinions at a keyboard, but sometimes facing the consequences does. You should not be at risk of being Obama'd.

Almost a week ago, here in Ukraine, my wife and I got a call from Client Bank Ukraine. It is a division of Privat Bank, which is owned by Oligarch turned Governor Igor Kolomoisky. They wanted to know if I had diplomatic status at the American Embassy in Kiev. That inquiry is weird enough on its own, and even more so since I have NEVER had an account with either bank. How would they even know I exist, let alone be interested in my passport? Where did they get a phone number?

I have written about Mr. Kolomoisky in a few of the articles I have published. He was the Oligarch who said about the protests in southeast Ukraine: "Give them what they want. We can hang them later." Both he and another Oligarch were reported on the news today, because they are hiring mercenary groups to quell any protests and maintain order in the regions they control.
