Edwards Evening News: Report from New Hampshire

Tell A Friend

"If you're considering caucusing for John Edwards, you know what you're gonna get because I'm gonna shake that place up," he told hundreds of Iowans packed into the auditorium at Des Moines' Roosevelt High School.

The former North Carolina senator gave one of his most emphatic speeches of the year before a crowd that had gathered partly to hear musicians Bonnie Raitt and Jackson Browne sing on his behalf. The musicians weren't the only ones drawing standing ovations. The audience cheered and whistled when Edwards called for their help in fighting to get the country back on track.

A voter asked him whether he had the management experience to lead the country, given that his professional background mainly consisted of confronting rivals as a trial lawyer. Edwards retorted: "Hell, yeah, I'm confrontational."

Earlier today, NCDem Amy had a terrific diary on Jackson Browne and Bonnie Raitt on the campaign trail with Edwards. I wish I had been there!

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

These Ideas Are "Band-Aid" Measures

We need policies that will heal America not keep a wounded America from festering any further. That begins with a rejection of militarization in America, which would mean the rejection of war as an instrument of policy. It means repealing NAFTA and recognizing that NAFTA is a major reason poverty has risen and unions are frustrated in America. It means recognizing that NAFTA is the reason worker's rights has suffered in the past decade. It means repealing the PATRIOT Act and allowing for people to not fear they will have their civil liberties violated if they stand up and demand dignity and respect from government and corporations. It means demanding peace and sustainability and encouraging veganism because veganism will result in a change in the way we live that will lead to curbing the effects of global climate change.

We've given the carnivorous, ignorant, brutal, naive people, "either you're with us or against us" type in office a chance for too long. It's time to let a "give peace a chance" or "Why can't we be friends?" person have a shot at leading this country. We need someone who will treat the world like a neighborhood and not the projects of an inner city.

IS Edwards that man? You tell me. You work for him. Tell me something to make me believe he isn't just talking because this talk works and is "believable" to voters right now. Tell me he isn't just doing it because Obama and Clinton aren't. Tell me he isn't doing it because Kucinich is and he needs to steal his thunder or else he could meet defeat.

I want the policies for change. And while I like a certain candidate, ultimately, when it comes down to supporting a Democratic candidate, I just want to make sure we are going to take a major turn in another direction after winning in 2008.

*(Let's put it this way: We have to offer something radically different than 2004 if we are going to beat a Republican. We have to awaken and energize the Democratic base of voters with Democratic issues and stop this talk of unity and bipartisanship that is so phony. There are things America needs done and whether it's done with bipartisanship or not, we need someone who will energize the people to pressure their leaders for this change. Can Edwards do that?)

Yes, Edwards is the man.

And no, I don't work for him. I volunteer for him, but I (and the other folks who do Edwards Evening News, which is a regular nightly diary on Daily Kos) do not work for the campaign. All of us are volunteers and we put so much work into it for free precisely because Edwards has the policies we really need to move this country forward. And he is passionate about them. And no, they are not band-aid measures. They are exactly what is needed.

As for repealing NAFTA, Edwards will at minimum make major changes to it. He has an extremely strong record on opposing trade policies that are unfair to American workers and bad for the environment. Your candidate, Kucinich, unfortunately likes to distort Edwards's record somewhat, so I'm afraid that if you're listening to him you're really not getting the straight scoop on this. That's too bad because I like Dennis, but I had a great deal more respect for him before he started making statements that somewhat distort Edwards's record.

If you want to read more about Edwards's policies, you can do so here. Also, you can download an 80 page booklet about much of his policy here. Edwards is extremely passionate about his stances on the issues, and the stances he has taken really do come from the heart.

I keep watching

I don't know.  I think the probabilities of an Edwards ticket are greater then a Kucinich ticket, but Edwards is a little too inside and able to raise substantial money.  I think the Corporate hand may receive little opposition in an Edwards Administration.

I would like to see Edwards become uncomfortable with the 9/11 Commission Report and state that a new independent inquiry should become a top priority ASAP.
