As embedded into federal law, of course these are not voluntary.
And finally, up to 44 states, according to the GAO, require some form
of compliance with federal standards. For those states, the VVSG is
also NOT voluntary.
That's great if you think everyone should be forced to use the
EAC-designed equipment. It's great if you buy the bullshit that the
federal standards are all about election system integrity.
Not so great if you think the White House shouldn't be designing our
voting technologies. And also not so great if you look at the design
itself. It's not about election system integrity, not in the sense of
citizen oversight and democracy, that is. The White House designs are
all about exceedingly complex and expensive high tech configurations.
Current voting equipment, with its unbelievably shoddy product design,
costs about $5K a pop. Even a cursory look at the White House voting
system designs - VVSG II (and even the VVSG I)- tells you the new
units will cost at minimum $20-30K each.
What we all need to understand is that the EAC's voting system
"guidelines" (sic) and certification programs have nothing to do with
election integrity. They are all about the high tech e-voting
industry. Period.
And as our wonderful NH State Treasure, Granny D says:
"These [corporate CEOs] do not go around the world spreading peace,
justice and democracy. They spread credit card debt, cell phones,
sweatshop conditions, factory farms for hogs and not much better for
people. They are in it for the money, and they want to economically
enslave people, not free them."
