Now might be a good time to start talking about this. It may be a good time to start saying to friends and family that the PATRIOT Act should be brought to an end. These above provisions should be enacted.
Expect a backlash from telecoms. Expect possible fake grassroots organizing from telecoms in opposition to changes. This could very well happen (think about how the American Petroleum Instittute has mobilized "energy citizens" in opposition to legislation aimed at curbing effects of climate change).
Also, expect President Obama, the White House, and members of Congress to be extremely reluctant to stand tall and support civil liberties. The Democratic Party's and Republican Party's leadership on the preservation of liberty in America has been non-existent.
Maybe this is because not defending liberty equals profit for corporations and allows for an increase in corporate power. Or, maybe this is because not caring about the erosion of civil liberties enables the military-industrial complex to grow.
Americans have lost (or never had) the moral fortitude to stand up and enact real measures to bring an end to torture and hold those who pushed for torture policies in the Bush Administration accountable.
Perhaps, Americans will at least act out of self-interest and worry about what the PATRIOT Act has done to freedom and liberty and talk about how government should not have all this power to trample the rule of law and infringe upon civil liberties.
